1. 4 Strings, and that feels just right.
 2. Pah! that's a mere bagatelle. What about this or this even
 3. Finally! I have at last found a use for that pair of old Roller skates, that I've been keeping back since Great Granddad Patrick Pending (see pic below), left it me in his will in 1986. Bolt the bass to one skate, attach other to right leg, as per normal, and use left leg to punt oneself along the road. Like a kids scooter. All the while of course, keeping a firm grip on the neck of the bass to steer it. .
 4. You say
It's too expensive for risking a letdown! Plus it seems Alembics lose half of their value the moment the 'used' tag is put on them.
The obvious answer to that is to say 'why then, are you not looking for a used one' ?? Alembic prices are ridiculous anyway. A new Alembic Epic goes for about $7000 but you can get a mint condition second hand one only a year old for $1500. I believe that there is something about alembics that make normal people go mad. There is one guy on the Alembic forum, who has paid out $5000 for an Alembic Orion 5 string. He got in in the sale normal price was over $7000. It is so new that it has not even been built yet. Its still in the alembic factory, and the guy is now selling it for $3000 ! So he's taking a $2000 loss and has not even received it yet!!!!! Click here to see this poor loon afflicted with GAS (and then his wife found the credit card receipt ?) I would never even contemplate spending that sort of money on any instrument that I could not try out first. I would advise you to do the same. Unless you are a rich millionaire. You are being seduced by a brand name. Are you a millionaire ? (or are you poor loon number 2 ?) .
 5.
I am it's actually become a bit of an addiction, I sat up until 3am because I couldn't stop playing it. I kid you not I was so tired I was playing up and down the F-Board resting my head against the top horn and dozing off and coming too again and playing more. Only stopping because I was scared I'd fall completely asleep and drop it on the floor. Lol I think it's safe to say I'm hooked.
Drop it on the floor! You don't have a strap on it ? Congratulation's on the addiction by the way.
 6. I got my present Hartke LH500 maybe 5 months ago. After a few weeks the noise started happening. Strange thing was sometimes it happened from the moment you switched on, but mostly it started to appear after a half hours playing. Changing bass and leads did nothing. But moving leads around or touching the strings muted it a bit, and it was much worse with the treble on high, or roll the bass off.. The noise it makes is this. Minor crackling pulses for two seconds then a gap and then starting over again. Definitely regular loud pulses though. Then after it not happening for several weeks it started again a few weeks ago. I was getting ready to send it back to GAK, when I bought a BDI21 bass driver DI/ pedal. As soon as I plugged this in the noise disappeared, no matter what settings I used ? Anyone have any thoughts ? Magic Pedal ?
 7. Thanks for the help chaps. Guess what, I go to Amazon to buy one and they are back on sale there for £2.21 ! Result
 8. I have bought myself a nice little B DI 21 (Sansamp clone) All's well so far and I am quite pleased with what I'm getting from it in terms of sound. Especially with my Hartke LH500 , going though my 450 Watt Behringer cab. Only niggle, which often goes with pedals is that if I use a battery I often forget to unplug the Input and the battery drains away overnight. (I was going to buy the Behringer 9v power supply from Amazon, but it disappeared overnight and was replaced by a seller supplying one for 7.50 plus postage, so I decided to wait and see if I could get a cheaper one. Wish I'd bought it now, as so far I have used two 9v Duracell's at 3.50 a time, and left the input jack in and drained them. I have tested the Duracell's with a voltage meter and it appears that they now output approx. 6v, which is not enough to power the BDI21. However I was wondering if I wire up the two batteries together, will the 12v be too much for the pedal ? Any wire heads/electricians out there know if it would be ok or too much ?
 9. Paul mailed me the pics to put up here for show. It now officially exists!
 10.
Posted to Daz today.
Received this afternoon. Many Thanks.
 11.
I'd recable them entirely myself then you can put on a cable as thick as you like!
Damn I threw out an old pair of curly cable type headphones a few month back. I could have used the cable off them. I told them that throwing stuff out always comes back to haunt you!
If you get a good join and insulate them from each other it should work fine.
That's the wired thing I don't think they are insulated from each other inside this gossamer rubber outer. Or they might be, actually I cant actually see that small ? Jeesh I know copper is expensive these days, but making it out of copper vapour is ridiculous
 12. I bought a pair of half decent Sony headphones a few month back. They're ok but nothing special. Still, 40 quid is 40 quid, so I was not best pleased when I decapitated them by rolling the bloody Dyson over the cable, not to mention puzzled. How can a bloody vacuum cleaner cut right through a headphone cable ? I'll tell you how. The bloody cable has three wires no thicker than a hair, inside a contraceptive thin rubber outer case. The three 'wires' are colored red, green and bare copper. At least I think the green one is a wire its literally to thin to see ?! Is there any chance of someone who has no access to an electron microscope and Nano medical equipment being able to repair this ? I mean if I just tie the colored 'wires' together, then wind some tape around them, like we did back in the stone age (ie: the 1990's) that wont work will it ? (whisper) I am sick to death of buying bloody tiny earphones and snapping them though, by catching a finger in a loop or zipping up a jacket or something similar. So I thought I'd buy a decent sized pair and they'd last. Ha! When I was a lad we had real headphone cables thicker than your finger, mutter mumble, bring back national service, etc etc
 13.
Outstanding result, but just one question - where does this leave the guy who tried to sell it on eBay? Has he ended up being the loser on this?
I assume that as he bought it from crack converters that they gave him the money back ? I hope so. (pictures can be uploaded to photobucket or flickr etc and use the
 14. You bunch of reactionary old farts. Play them all and damn the consequences.
 15. Yeah Garvey puts out some mean bass lines. A lot of people have no idea how cool they can be. Check em out I says. Here are the UK gigs. I think only Manchester and Brixton are the ones where they are doing the Back to Front thing with Original lineup plus Howard Devoto. 11 May :Dublin 25 May :Manchester 26 May :Brixton 01 June :Poole 02 June :Bath 14 Sep :Edinburgh 15 Sep :Durham Then to Holland 16 Sep :Tilburg
 16. Anyone going to see the Buzzcocks at Manchester on the 25 May ? I'll be there. anyone else on Basschat going ?
Playing two very special shows featuring their stuff 'n' things and things 'n' stuff from right now to back then, Buzzcocks will arrive at O2 Apollo Manchester on 25th May before rolling into the big smoke on the 26th for a night at O2 Academy Brixton, London. In a three-part evening of pure Buzzcocks entertainment, they'll kick off with new and contemporary material featuring the current line-up of Pete Shelley (vocals / guitar), Steve Diggle (vocals / guitar), Chris Remington (bass guitar) and Danny Farrant (drums). Part two sees Pete and Steve perform the United Artists 'classic years' tunes featuring the classic line-up of Shelley / Diggle and Steve Garvey (bass guitar) and John Maher (drums) before the evening's proceedings will be brought to a clamouring close in part three by Pete, Steve, and John being joined on stage for the first time in over 33 years by original co-founder and front man, Howard Devoto!
After trying many many compressors I found that the Green BLE100 limiter is my perfect compressor - I even have a second spare one.
I too, have the BLE 100 Limiter/Enhancer/Compressor. its a great bit of kit, dirt cheap as well.

 23. Its only since i started to get past beginner level that i have realized this. But i should have really known for a long time as Billy Sheehan, mentioned it that he muted notes the same way, when i saw him in Manchester bass day last year. When i play something from tab or notation, (IE: Something that is supposed to be a particular way, and not something that I have composed or free formed myself) if i try to put in the muting or dead notes or grace notes i always mess up. Usually i will eventually work it out in my own way and own style. I eventually came to realize that, only after I had got the main body of notes in the correct order and got the timing correct that i was putting in the muting etc, without even realizing that i was doing it. That was why a song would eventually sound correct. Not because i had practiced it over and over, but that i had slowly put all the extra bits in where they were needed and not even realized it. The thread about Good Times by Chic, got me thinking about it. Someone mentioned muting, dead notes or something. I thought to myself "What dead notes" there are none in that riff. It was only when i played it and eventually recorded myself that i realized that i had put them in and not even been aware of it. then i thought on this more and saw that this was how i had started to do things for quite a while now. If I think about putting a mute or dead note in as I am doing it, it becomes much more difficult. Only after I have got it right can I put any thought into it, otherwise it gets messed up. Anyone else have any thoughts on this. Or like to share the way they go about it. Or am I the only one who does it this way ?
 24.
What about a bass drum..? No, not a 'kick', that's cheating. I can't imagine playing a barse drum, or a bass (like the fish...) drum. The only option seems to be bass (base...) drum. I'm not likely to change now, anyway, at my age.
Indeed. Just wonderin though. To those two people who pronounce is to rhyme with pass. What about Treble & Bass, is that treble & base, then ??
 25.
I've never heard anyone say it before - always pronounced b-ace
Maybe its just people who are from Tyne-side and are of a certain age. (IE: people who might know what I'm on about if I said "I'd dow anythin for a canny bag o Tudor, man" for instance ?)
