me too! I played drums. My kit was made from a plastic bucket, cardboard cilinders, with tape to protect the "skins" from my sticks (cardboard alone breaks too quickly), three metal plates of various sizes that were original part of a fruit holder, the underside of my little sister's cot (metal strips and springs, sounded great and reverby ) and a real cymbal I managed to buy at the local flea market for nearly nothing as it was bent. One friend of mine played electric guitar (not an Affinity Squier, those did not exist yet, Squiers are actually decent... he had some horrible made in Japan or somewhere else unplayable thing, the brand name was Arirang), and another played a Spanish guitar. That was our band. The "Maderos Light" we called ourselves. We were 16. We did not let instruments (or talent) get in the way of us being in a band
That sounds brilliant. Good on ya. Kids today don't know how lucky they are etc etc. But i also actually feel sorry for them sometimes. They wouldn't have a clue how to make something like a home made drum kit for themselves, nor would they even try. They see no worth in it if it is not made by Sony, Nike, Fender, etc. When i think of all the hours i spent in my dads shed making go-carts from old prams, or building dens. Me and my brother are often in my or his shed. His lad and his mates show no inclination to come in with us, or offer to help, or just watch. The siren pull of the x-box or the tv is too strong. I think in the future we are going to pay for coddling our children in such a manner.

Just fell in love with my Farida P bass after new strings
daz replied to daz's topic in Bass Guitars
Thats a nice bass Scott. As you say for 150 quid its brilliant. I dont plan on selling my FPB 18 any time soon, but I will give you first refusal if i ever do. Farida make wonderfull basses dont they? I just wish they were more widely known. My FJB 20 is also pretty cool sounding ( if heavy) I have swapped the strings on the FPB 18 again. This time I have some Status Flats (made in house, not re badged) Here are my FJB 20 and FPB 18 side by side. The FPB 18 has really hot pickups. The hottest pickups of any bass I have ever owned in fact. -

It seems rough, but no rougher than a thousand other estates in the UK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--TL3JHl0Iw&feature=related

Apparently life expectancy in Gurnos is 58!! WTF do they do to themselves there ?. (Nice pic of the Gurnos Social club in that link. I've heard that they are big Elvis fans there. )

Balcro munkonthehill crag42 Mickeyboro fumps tauzero badass Rich discreet Geek99 Well because Fumps had it i just assumed everyone above him had read it ?? Is that not so ?

Cheers I might try it.

Sorry i should have been more precise. When i say "without the tone knob" I mean without the pots and everything. Without the entire tone circuit. I saw The Primus Claypool dude with such a bass and just wondered?

Would my bass sound like, tone knob on: Full bass /Full treble / In the middle ?
I think I'll go and clean out the fish pond. As a matter of fact I meant it yes only for the purpose of getting the groove that's why I said slap/mute. Of course the same can be achieved by "ghosting" the open A with the fretting hand and slapping your thumb by the edge of the fretboard or indeed muting with the palm near the end of the fretboard, but the string is too bouncy and soft at that point when you slap and mute, I find (and this is personal perhaps) that by the bridge the string it is tighter and the slap bounces off much clearer when muting.
I'm sorry. I'm sure what you are describing there is obvious to everyone else on this Forum but me, but I don't have an earthly clue what your on about there. Not that it would matter. Gabriel himself could show me how to slap/pop on his heavenly harp and i still wouldn't get it. (much to my annoyance, as I'm sure any oaf can do it really ) (I just don't get that ) Slap & pop groove thang I feel like the entire world is in on some joke I dont get. Its f***ing annoying sometimes! .... .sigh I think that I'll go and clean out the fish pond.

They (Montrose) were on the OGWT box set, with Mark Ellen talking about how he played the first album to death when he got his first flat at age 19.
-
Nice wall of bass you there. Personally I'd have gone with f 5.6 1/30 at ISO 200 though. can I just ask though, you say "(rest your palm on the bridge and rock the hand." you definitely mean on the bridge ?
Thanks for the heads up on Shadows & light.. There's some geat Jaco bass on there indeed.

Sorry Daz, I missed this - but what a brilliant video, some great insight there! Did I miss something, or did they handcut the frets without a guide?
Thats exactly what i was thinking ? surely there must have been at least a pencil line or something ?!

I may try the same thing with my new idea iGuitar online, £30 for 12 issues, Put out one issue then declare it bankrupt, so i dont need to repay anyone legally. Lovely jubbly Then theres, iDrummer, iTrombone, iVibrator, the list is endless. (Hey why am i giving away all these good ideas ?)
No matter how many times I try,I just can't get into Pink Floyd-I just find it really boring. The only album of theirs that I can tolerate is 'Wish You Were Here'.
A big Ditto on that from me. Awfullness incarnate (with a helicopter in that bloody video i saw many times in 1979/80 at the college projector at the weekly Record club/Film night.)

If the inglourious bass turd, still has the book. Apparently he has not been on line in the Forum since Dec 13, so lets hope he is OK. Does anyone here know him IRL, or has chatted with him here enough to get to know him? Any of them want to email him ? (address on his page) The thing is we are supposed to be reading it and signing it in memory of OldGit. Hopefully it will wing its way from member to member forever But if not then i think it should be sent back to his Missus. Dont forget to Sign it. before you pass it on.

As anyone here can tell you, finding a good set of bass strings can well be an expensive buisiness. Some people never stop looking. Trying to chase down that sound! Status bass strings are not expensive though, so you might as well start there. They are made in the UK 'in house', not just some rebadged cheapos bought in bulk from the far east, with a big mark up. Try the link here: Status strings Follow the links on the left to Online shop/Bass Strings/ Price is maybe £18 for the average set of flats or round wounds for a four string bass. Make sure you order the correct length though.
Brilliant. There are some fine instrument building traditions in the far east too btw.
Indeed there are. We forget that because labour is so cheap out there, it costs much less to have a part handmade than it does to buy and jig a machine to do it.* Just because labour is cheap does not automatically mean it is shoddy. *In an un related note, and on the subject of cheap manpower. I remember once seeing one of those shows where they buy an old banger car and do it up and sell it. This one episode goes to India and in one scene they were stripping the paint off the roof of the banger. Instead of using an airline and sander attachment, or a cheap elctric grinder, he had 6 lads with old stanley knife blades working away at it, while he stood to the side and lambasted them. As if were an everyday occurance, which i am sure it was

Who's Next? Need to decide who to write my next book on...
Money is not the only driver, Daz.
I supose so, if you have it already you dont miss not having it. We have to remember though, even bass players who to us are very famous like Jaco and Stanley, are complete unknows to most of the world. Even so called music journalists dont know who they are. I remember seeing the Old Grey Whistle Test DVD box set, where they had Mark Ellen and David Hepworth on it doing the obligatory voice overs and reminising on old times and what happpned when the band were in the studio, etc. So up comes Stanley Clarke, and not only could they not remember his name, they had no idea who he was and could not remember the actual Old Grey recording, even though at least one of them was in the studio and must have spoke to him and introduced him! So they spent their time mickey taking the keyboard player who had strapped his keys to a guitar strap and mistook it for a guitar, as was in vogue for a period in the late 70s/early 80s (fair enough point on that one, though) Excuse to show the clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0D2RtOTrIg -

Never heard of any of them, sorry. Surely you cant make money on selling books that the majority of the population have never heard of ?
