2. A big ask this as I can't think of many who would like to play this melody on bass ...but has anyone a link to the sheet music of chords? I'm part of the way there but a helping hand would be great! or if you know the original cheers guys
3. Great bass tom....can i ask what pickguard you used? I'm guessing a Fender O.E? Thanks tom
4.
This anecdote about Bernard saying that the Musicman bass still had the original strings on is often cited when this topic rears its' head, but it is important to remember that it is exactly that, ie an anecdote and not necessarily the last word in what was actually true. I suppose we will never know the real answer, but to my ears it sounds like dead roundwounds on Bernards' Stingray back on the Chic/Sister Sledge era, and definitely roundwounds on the recordings he made with it during the 1980's. Whatever the truth is , you could certainly emulate that sound pretty well with either type of string. It's worth mentioning the Bernard went on to use Spector , G&L and Sadowsky basses during the 1980's, in addition to the Fender Precision, Fender Jazz, Musicman and B C Rich basses he was spanking during the 1970's. I seem to remember he experimented with an Alembic around the time he and Nile were working with Diana Ross, but that could be my memory playing tricks on me. If Bernard didn't have an Alembic at some point then he should have done, is all I can say.
beat me to it with all that .....I believe that line about "what strings come..." was said 'tongue in cheek', he was known for having a very professional work ethic AND a very dry sense of humor....as a producer he may of had other reasons to protect his 'sounds' too. Either way a much missed uber cool bass player indeed.
5.
I think relief and string height when set properly can make even a relatively bad bass play nice. Its all about ergonomics and economics and being easy to play, too much relief and more effort is needed for fretting.
Good call
6. Not forgetting the BB series, fantastic tools.
7. Yamaha rbx line....can't go wrong, l like Squiers ( still own 2) but EVERY yamaha ive owned just feels a little bit special.
8. Do you need a stingray?.....only if you don't need a G string....great 3 string though.
9. Thats the right money....you maybe surprised how well a squier will play....buy it, if you dont like it punt it on.
10. Chic....h good find thanks, tidy player too (wish I was half as good) yeah, some of the lines I know are a bit 'odd' but I think he maybe playing more the melody than the bass lines to some of the tunes
11. ooh yes so they do, I took a peek at mine....not having another bass with O.E. blocks is this unique to the VMJ 70's maple n maple.
12. interesting take here too...as an anorak and owner of an RXB4-A2...I think his batteries are flat powering his volume pots LEDS tut' tut' http://youtu.be/OFtdD05Uidw
13. Hands in the air, whistles blowing, bottle of water handy... I sometimes think the talent really wasn't shared out too well and I feel sadly wanting...shame the same delay used on the signal comes across in the video! and here is the version on an acoustic 'original' Diego is covering
14.
"....There's also a anob value to the Fender."
that's not quite true, not all Fender players are nobs... I've had both, Fender and Squier are both good.... but then my cheapie Westfield P does the same job too. as above try 'um all and let your wallet, fingers and ears decide.

18. Yamaha RBX4-A2 'jazz bass', superlight, amazing sustain....worth hunting one down
19. I really need to try one of these....Peavey's always get a lot of love around these parts.
20. Ive been told there is a theory about relating music to colours.....similar colours = related keys....i'll look into that
21. I do wonder why some circle of 5ths were far prettier than others, why do some have colours? The colours appear to be the same on the pretty ones so it can't just be for fun?
22.
Get the trumpet on board and give this a go .....
this IS Norfolk, we think the disco era has only just started and that 'We Are Family' refers to our brother and sisters wedding I edited the earlier post as it didn't come across too well.
23.
The term 'Standards' does indeed reference a number of popular songs - mostly in Jazz (I Got Rhythm, Stella By Starlight etc...) that musicians are expected to know. As different genres of music get older and more established then they start to create their own list of 'standards' e.g. a few weeks ago I was at a jam night that featured a lot of Metal players - it was expected that I could play x bt Metallica, and y by Ozzy Osborne etc... They just tend to be the most popular tunes to play within a given style.
Cheers
