You could get a fretless for your first bass, but you'll find you'll have to learn about intonation, even with lines applied to the fingerboard. One less task to begin with if you get a fretted bass, as the intonation issue won't be such an obstacle, which will leave you free to address all the other issues associated with learning bass from beginning. Best wishes for your bass career and welcome to BC

Half price LCD solder station at Maplins - £30
essexbasscat replied to lemmywinks's topic in Accessories and Misc
What's the deal here ? if the solder doesn't melt, the iron's it's not hot enough. If it's too hot, the solder spits. Why is this unit any better than a standard soldering iron ? Anyone else think this is a gimmick ? -
Anyone using a stand to play while stood up?
essexbasscat replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in Accessories and Misc
Slightly different tack. Have you tried lessons in the Alexander technique ? It'll help you to be mindful of how you hold your shoulders / neck / upper trunk while playing, where prolonged muscle tension can lead to pain. Also, basses like the Hohner jack weight next to nothing and sound huge -
Funnily enough, had lots of excessive bass on our last gig and it certainly wasn't me. We had a new gtr and keys had new cabs plus the playing area had low beams and ceilings and we kept getting a bass trap. If it was down to the room, then ok, but I will be mightily p*** *d if it continues. There is no reason for boom if you EQ the right rig, IMO. So, dependng on who the source is...they need to address that. I even had to slap lines to play soundthing that didn't add to the bass coming from everywhere else. I also recorded the gig and the sound on tape was perfect and everyone else said the sound out front was great... More time spent on the sound check at real gig levels and more so if you have changed anything... These things can happen once and be written off, possibly, but you need a consertive collective brain-storm.
A lot of what JT said. Also, when you checked levels against the drums, were you standing next to the kit ? Perhaps get a long lead and have a wander out front for your level check with the drums. Did anyone complain about the drums being too loud as well ?

Arranged a deal with Grant in a minute. I then struggled for a week trying to get the boxes and courier sorted out (work, doh!). Grant was patient and friendly all the way, bless 'im. I've met some good people via BC along the way. It's a pleasure to add Grant to the list.

I tend to trust it will arrive inside the next three months and forget all about it for most of the week

Square neck pocket compatability
essexbasscat replied to jakebeamish's topic in Repairs and Technical
The current neck is the worst bit of the instrument ? is it possible to use the neck at all ? If yes, take the frets out of the current neck, buy a long sanding block of the radius of your choice and level the board out. May save a whole load of pain compared to going the other route ? -
For clarity here, the link isn't about the most bass, it's more about the quality / type of bass sound.

Just for clarity here, the link is not about the amount of bass, but it does touch on that topic
Is the greater efficiency of modern PAs the reason why the kick drum is always the loudest thing in the FOH mix these days ? Now that's a question I'd like answering.
May well be discussed in the link ?

I must admit I found the comments about low frequency distortion quite illuminating. I haven't come across the idea before and I've seen no corroborating evidence, but It would certainly go some way towards explaining the difference between what some people call 'the piano' notes and the 'dub' notes, even though they are the same note (I won't say frequency, because that would just complicate things hideously). Wonder if that concept also goes to explain the difference I heard between my GS112 cab and Alex Claber's Big Baby Two, when A/B'ing using the same amp and bass guitar into both. What's more, the difference was very apparent with all three amps I tried which were; - Eden WT550 - Aguilar AG500 - Ashdown ABM900 The GS sounded like the cone was stuffed with wool, compared to the BB2, which seemed almost transparent by comparision. I hadn't come up with an explanation at the time, but maybe the low frequency distortion plays a part ? I also wonder if low frequency distortion goes some way to explaining why some people find they can't hear the BB2 up close. I'm not here to defend the BB2, but just trying to find a way of understanding a puzzling phenomenon.

I found this one a thought provoking read. For your entertainment BC http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/what_really_defines_good_bass_in_sound_reinforcement1/

Twisted neck problem - any advice??
essexbasscat replied to barryman's topic in Repairs and Technical
Have a peek at a thread I raised recently titled 'longitudinal neck twist'. May be a start ? -
Radius guages are a great idea. You could do a google search for Dan Erlewine and order his guitar player repair guide. You'll find detailed guidance there on practically everything you'll need to get the best from your guitar or bass. It depends how deep you want to go into it really. Best bet is to just keep reading around on the topic, learning as you go. It can be a fascinating journey and there's nothing like seeing the smile on your friend's face as they start to play the guitar you've just set up and handed back to them

My band was so Beatles heavy for a while we may as well have been a tribute band

Water and steam seem to be the order of the day. If heat and moisture have to get to the wood, that does imply a laquer or poly re - finish I guess, so no quick jobs with this one. Still, if it's a cheap guitar, nothing to lose ! Thanks for the replies all

Dropped over to Portsmouth yesterday to collect a Telecaster from Dave. We had a good chat over a tea - very welcome after that journey. Dave is a good host Lovely guitar Dave, I'm going to enjoy playing that one Thanks again Tom

I bought a truss rod adjusting tool from Chris. When someone keeps in touch through the deal, you know you're dealing with someone that really does care about stuff. If only everyone worked that way Thanks Chris, first class Tom
