1. I've just downloaded some more of the tunes to have a go at - it's a really useful resource! I bought the Hal Leonard Bass Method book recently - it's three books (with 3 cds) in one, and I'm resolutely working my way through the first book. it's the syncopated rhythms that I find hard to read & put into practice - I can play "by ear" in syncopated style just fine - trying to read is sometimes a bit like the sketch off the Jennifer Saunders show - have you seen this? Pretty funny - it's the only version on Youtube with a decent soundtrack - (the french subtitles are a bonus feature) .
2. Excellent thread - just found it. Have downloaded several (and, just to show that I'm playing through them & paying attention, found a bum note in bar 12 of Happy Birthday - the third note should be D not C). All good stuff, and yes, I'm struggling with learning to read Standard Notation, but it's really worthwhile I think, if I can just put the time in on it. It is simply mad using the old "play it from memory" technique that I've done for years. Why would you try to memorise a novel when you can get a whole library full out to read???? I'll stick at it - but some days I find I make a complete c**k of it, and go off muttering darkly to myself, other days I think - "Hey, I'm getting it"..... Keep on posting Grangur!
3. ......and after just three of those excellent Jazz cigarettes - unconscious and not caring...(but smiling).... Interesting article - did you look at the "Rhythm Yardstick" clip with Anthony Wellington & Victor Wooten? - it came up as a related video on the You Tube page at the same time as the 4 levels video.
4. Excellent video and put across in a sympathetic and interesting way- thanks for sharing - will apply it to my EUB playing.
5. Cool - I've just put a new floor in at our house, but, sadly it doesn't match these congas, otherwise..............
6. Hey Grandad, What flats do you use? I'm a convert to flats - I have tried the Fender, La Bella, D'Addario Chromes and the Black Nylon wound flats. Which are your favouri tes?
7. Is anyone else going to this? I love having a mooch round these local shows - you never know your luck - maybe a bargain to be had................. Also there is a decent coffee and burger van outside (usually) and not charging silly prices. http://www.b-visible.co.uk/businesses/72/mojo.html ....and only £3 in. Maybe see you there. Geoff
8. Bought some tuition boks from Martyn, all good, prompt delivery. Thanks, Stompbox
9. Why not get a more interesting bass & case - say a BC Rich thing or Flying V bass or similar - then get a shaped sidecar & have it fitted to a Harley Davidson 12,000,000cc hog? Would be much more interesting - plus you could get to wear interesting leather "butch" biker outfits (as if you needed an excuse). ( BTW I used to take a Selmer Goliath in the back of a mini minor regularly to gigs, ........ but that was a while ago)
10. Andy just bought a book from me - Standing In The Shadows of Motown. Great guy, good communicator - deal with confidence. Cheers, Stompbox.
11. Well said/expressed, Beer of the Bass....
12. Just had my new Lamborghini Aventador delivered - negligible bootspace, but hey, it's a nice drive so will have my bass, amps & cabs delivered & set up onstage by a contractor as required..................
13.
Hi All, I have been playing bass longer that I wish to think about and I have always used roundwounds. I usually use Ernie Ball 50/105 gauge. I am not au fait with flats and wonder what the pros and cons are of using them. I play classic rock and blues and weapon of choice in a Fender Jazz Bass, I am a finger player. Any thoughts, view etc appreciated. Dougie
Hey Dougie - what you put in your original post is a description of my bass "career" - jazz bass, many years, roundwound strings, and (I don't know if this applies to you) a pick rather than finger player.. I recently (12months or so ago) discovered flats. They are tremendous. Easy on the fingers, and if you get some nylon tapewounds, (not cheap though) they can also have a nice bright tone, not just the more mellow tones normally found with flat wound strings. I'm now a finger rather than pick player too................... I'm a convert. Cheers, Stompbox.
14. I've always been a Jazz fan, and I've replaced the neck pickup volume control with a pull switch pot in the electronics on the so that when you pull it out it puts the two pickups on together in series giving you a big P bass sound. Two in one, as it were - excellent. http://www.guitar-mod.com/wiring/j_series.gif
15.
Yeah, if you add yellow in that situation you end up playing the greens ;-)
Oh very good!!
16. Wow. Thanks for the link. Amazing & talented.
17. Well I think you just maybe need a break. I'm in my early sixties & have played with all sorts of bands (Including dance bands). I've principally played bass but diverted into lead vocals & guitar for a while. Oh yes & quite a bit of rifle & clay pigeon shooting. Guess what? Tinnitus...... for years & years. Bummer. But never mind - I'm still keen on bass & playing - regardless ---- it's what I do. Just chill out & come back to it.
18. Just came across this competition - although I've been a member of and a big fan of Basschat for several years. Great idea - a shame that the numbers of votes are so few. I did try to leave comments on the Soundcloud page but it didn't go on - do you have to be a member/sign in to leave a comment???
