I've just ordered another couple of CTS 500k pots. I'm going to rewire it as per the 1957 specs with a 0.1uF paper in oil cap. Glad my bass is rear routed cos these caps are huge. Still tempted to get another Lollar pickup for this to replace the Quarter Pounder.

You've no idea how many people are interested in this.

Wiring my pickup directly to the jack with a difference
Delberthot replied to Delberthot's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've decided just to rewire the bass as per the same 1957 specs that i had my other Warmoth wired. I still couldn't find 250k CTS pots with a long enough shaft in the UK. I decided that since I like the sound I get with the 500k ones to just get these again. -
They normally are 0.05. i have seen 0.047 before. I sometimes use 0.1 paper in oil caps as used in the original P basses. I think they've been 0.05 since the end of the 60s

I was actually wondering how accurate their SPL rating was. I had a load of Trace gear years ago and it still feels like the most sturdy out of everything I've had since. Plus it has Celestions and not those nasty Fane things. One of the cabs I had was one of the old 1153s. I replaced the driver with another Celestion 300w speaker. The new compact ones are 300w so that would work with the wedding band. the only downside is that from what I've seen, the larger 1518 cab which should have the better bass response is usually only about £20 more expensive and has a higher SPL. Downside in that I'd rather have the smaller cab but could have a fuller sound for an extra few quid but a bigger cab What's also impressive is that they come with the covers and the big ones come with speakons. So many combinations: 1153 & 1028H 1153 & 1153 1028H & 1028H 1518 & 1028H 1518 & 1518 1528 & 1028H - lordy lordy- I've just went back onto the trace website and there's a pic of Norman Watt Roy with a pair of this setup I'm not a big fan of 4x10"s. I'm also not a big fan of the weight of 4x10"s either

Holy Jebus, that is a bargain. You can use the money you save on a chiropractor - well worth it

I'm just thinking - £3500 for a fancy coffee table with veneer covering the pickups and cheap 20p plastic knobs. Where's the jewel encrusted, solid gold ones?

I'm actually tempted by the new Trace Elliot stuff as well. A bit more weight wise than what i was originally looking for but that's what casters are for!

Now I've had a chance to calm down I can understand where he's coming from in regard to the cost involved in posting something over to me that I could buy for a lot less but that completely misses the point in me buying it in the first place. I really thought that by buying something from someone that I'd actually had the chance to talk to would mean that should I need anything, it should be a lot easier than if I'd bought it from a much larger company as I would be able to go right to the source with any questions. I thought I had go on really well with him. we used to talk on MSN Messenger about regular stuff, nothing to do with bass. I respected the fact that he was busy so may not be able to speak for long. I really need to think about a replacement - whether I want to get another cab that is just as loud and punchy for use in all situations or go with getting 2 smaller cabs. If its one cab then I don't mind if it is heavier, i can get a 4x10" on my cab stand as long as its not too heavy. If its 2 then they would have to be around the weight of my current cab so I can carry one in each arm. This means that 1 cab = 80lbs, 2 cabs = 40lbs each. Another alternative would be to go for a big cab such as a 6x10" for the rock band and a separate dedicated cab for the wedding band. I've a lot to choose from. So far I'm looking at Bergantino, Genz, DR Bass, Aguilar, Eden (regular & Nemesis). I'm sure that there are loads more. I'm going to take my time and appreciate all suggestions. I'll probably have a good think when I'm away next week and then make my final decision the following week.

I can't find any pictures of the Bass Collection. It had an Ash body with a Paduak top with matching headstock, gold hardware and the ebony fretboard. I find that the simplicity of the electronics mean that I have more control over the sound. i can play with a regular touch and it sounds very warm and typical P bass but if I dig in it can get very dirty and gnarly with a real bite to the sound. I've also discovered that it responds really well to slapping in the same position as Larry Graham, ie where a normal split P pickup would be. I also use a kind of slapping, picking motion so instead ofs lapping the string dead on, I play right through it if that makes sense? I did think about painting the headstock sparkly gold but If I wasn't able to get an exact match then it would look odd. I noticed that Warwicks look good with the black with gold hardware and the silver logo so that's where I got the inspiration from that. The '51 reissue was a fantastic bass- so much so that I had thought about getting it down to SIMS to work the body into the '53 shape and repaint it sparkly gold but I thought it would be better to get the money from selling the bass then getting one made exactly as I wanted. It was the most difficult bass I ever had to sell as it sounded the best, I just couldn't live with the lack of contours. I could've bought the Sting bass but for the same money I was getting something very bespoke and unique. I am contemplating getting a bridge that allows me to adjust the string spacing as I liked the closer spacing of the Warwick 5 string. I wouldn't go as close and I need to make sure that the strings wouldn't be a mile away from the pickup poles if I did adjust it. There is one thing I've always wanted for it - a gold bridge cover in the same style as the originals. The later covers are very easy to come by but I've never seen an original style gold one.

I'm looking to replace my current cab with 2 cabs. I find that when used as a monitor it is too much and when used out front it is plenty loud enough but lacks the bottom end. My amp runs down to 4 ohms so I am looking for 2 8ohm cabs. The story is that the speakon on the cab stopped locking so I emailed Jorg to find out if I could get a new one. Apparently he did send one but I never received it. I was advised to hold fire and wait for it to come through despite the fact that I've had loads of stuff through from the US and never had to wait as long. I did email him countless times but heard nothing back - I even started a thread on Talkbass to see if anyone had heard from him as I thought he had went AWOL. I emailed him yesterday to say that I hadn't had anything through. I received a reply telling me I should just get one locally. In other words 'f*** off'. needless to say I am raging and now would like nothing more than to be rid of this cab for something else. This will be for sale as soon as I find something to replace it. I will replace the speakon and then sell the cab. I want nothing more to do with this company. The cab is less than 18 months old and this component shouldn't need replacing so soon. I will replace it with something that actually locks like it is supposed to. Should I be annoyed? Given that this cab cost in excess of £600 then I think I am right to want more than this. I had better service from Behringer when I blew one of their cabs - they sent me a new one. Perhaps it may be better to buy stuff from a large, faceless organisation so that there is no emotional ties. I spoke to the guy at great lengths about what I wanted before ordering this cab so to get this reply is pish. That's me vented my opinion. I would now like help to pick something new. I'll have a budget of around a grand. Excuse the bluntness of the thread, I'm still really pissed off.

Ocean Blue Warwick Corvette $$ 5 string with Hiscox case

Can you get them in the Karmann Ghia?
-
You can;t go wrong with a GK 700RB. Bucketloads of power and growl coming out the wazoo. You'll get a good one second hand and have money to spare for birds and Thunderbird.

As a last resort you can use electrical tape round the fingers. I had to do that once. Yeah, unless you;ve just begun playing you should have plenty life in your fingers to see the recording through. 4 songs, maybe 2 takes each one - you'll maybe playing for half an hour in total - the rest of the time will be spent going to the garage for Ginsters and fags before sitting on your arse for the rest of the time.

I would look for someone that's going to teach you what you want to learn. I know it sounds obvious but there are teachers that teach a specific course and won;t veer off into doing other stuff that the student wants to do

I bought a tin of the stuff in 1990 and still have about 2/3 of it left. I just got mine out of a hardware shop. The interweb hadn;t reached here at that time

This must be a new record - I've had this bass for all of 10 days, played one gig and had one practice with it. This is a seriously phenomenal bass. Its one of the fastest playing basses I've ever owned. You can play a million miles an hour and it will reproduce every note clearly. none of this muddy, notes running together rubbish. Don;t think that this is a polite bass either: it can get very aggresive sounding and growly if the need arises. The bass is very similar, control wise as a Musicman Sterling, it has 2 MM MEC humbuckers which can each be independently switched between series, single coil & parallel modes. Other controls are Volume, pickup pan, treble & bass. The volume also pulls up to activate passive mode. The width of the neck is 45mm at the nut and 61mm at the 12th fret All specs can be found here: http://www.warwick.de/modules/produkte/pro...2016&cl=EN# I would say that it sounds somewhere between a Thumb and a 2 band Stingray. The bass was made in August 2005 going by the serial number. When I got the bass it didn;t have any of the associated adjustment thingies but I will include both sized allen keys for it. It also comes with the usual strap locks as well and has a brand new set of 45-135 Yellow Label nickel Warwick strings fitted. It will come in a Hiscox hard case which includes the key. the bass has a few scratches here and there and a couple of dings. Unfortunately my camera is far too good and makes them all look 10 times worse than they are. The case has got a dent in it as well pointing out the way but is still rock solid. I've taken as many pictures of any marks as I could but can supply more if you want them. I've given it a full setup and clean. I went over the back of the neck with steel wool so its smooth as the proverbial I'm finished buying any more basses as I have come to the conclusion that the gold bass is the only one I will ever need so its cash only on this one. I don;t have any cardboard to put the case in but can bubblewrap it for posting or alternatively can meet up somewhere for the cost of fuel. I'm going to be in Southport next week on holiday so as long as it doesn;t take too much out of my day I could arrange to meet down that neck of the woods. Anyhoo, enough talk - here are the pics:
