1. That's very interesting. It's got proper tuners and the rear pickup is in the 70s position. Nice inlay too. There's been some dodgy 70s Fender clones on this forum but this looks like the real deal. Good luck with the sale.
2. They were imported by James Grant in Edinburgh in the 70s early 80s and given the name of his music shop. I bought mine in 79 because I was a spotty 16 year old with no money and it was the cheapest bass in the shop. If only I'd known it would one day become a collectors item I would have covered it in cellophane and stored it in a temperature controlled vault at the bank for the last 33 years as an investment for my retirement.
3. I liked the white one.
4.
Just a note: People pays between 4.000$ and 20.000$ for a original pre-CBS. The value of a mint condition '71 P-Bass like this is 3.000$ aprox. The value of a '00 P-Bass MiM is about 300$. And you, bass players, are not sure of which is which... something's wrong... hahaha
That's the value to 'investors' for vintage stuff. 'Players' just want something that sounds good. So if you had the choice of a loan ,to record an album, of a 62 P bass that sounded awful or a Squier that sounded great, most would go for the Squier. Put a Wizard thumper in a Squier bass and you'll get it sounding like a 62 P.
5. I played tainted love at a wedding once. I think it may have been a request by the happy couple. I got paid a lot of money to do it though.
6. 1. MM more twangy less thump 2. 58 Very thumpy with what I would say was the perfect woody P bass sound 3. 71 Also very thumpy and P bass sounding... very nice. They are all good in their own way. But I like the vintage sound of No 2 best.
7. Oh well looks like it's kosher then. I'd buy it if I didn't live 600 miles away.
8. Whoever has bid on this pile of cack will be very disappointed bunnies when they open the parcel when it's delivered.
9. I've used the 300 watt Line6 combo and even though most of the settings were a waste of time it was plenty loud enough with a decent speaker fitted and I could get a decent sound out of it without too much twiddling. But if something is being discounted as much as those Line6 400 watt combos are it's probably for a good reason so I would stay well clear if I were you. I second the idea of buying 2nd hand as you get much more bang for your buck.
10. As I type it's sitting at £375 but I'm not sure of it's pedigree? I do know that mid to late eighties was a transition period for Fender and some of the basses were made up of parts from different years. This may be the reason it has an early eighties 'American Standard' scratch plate, a 1990 serial number and a Mex style truss rod adjuster on the headstock. Very strange but a bargain if it's the real deal. 11. I've played through one of these and it has some serious grunt. Don't let all the bells and whistles put you off people this is a seriously good sounding and LOUD amp.
12. Ah yes I remember my Grant bass. I bought it secondhand in 1979 for £50. If I knew that 33 years later it would be worth so much I never would have thrown it in that skip in 1984.
13.
The OP hit a nerve that keeps grumbling from under on here. Namely, given that a total (in most of your opinions, incompetent) stranger is in charge of how your bass sounds, what exactly are you spending all that cash on? A vain hope that quality will triumph in the face of deaf old hippys? The knowledge that your onstage sound is exactly right? Personally, I think it`s both of those added to some denial about the whole process. I like nice amps also, but I reckon for the work I`m doing now, most of the time I could turn up with any old sh*t and so long as I could hear it all would be fine. You spends yer money.....
Sad..............but true.
14. There's a sucker born every minute.
15. I'd like to sound like Bernard Cribbins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7Bvd33V9dQ
16. Sorry bout that...........I just couldn't help it.
17.
this one has the nail to add attack at around 3:50
Bass face alert! Check out face at 1.06 harrrr, harrrr.
18. I'll take that as a no then....
19. I'm always swapping necks on my Jazz and it does make a big difference to the sound. I think I prefer the warmer sound rosewood gives me but I prefer the look of maple. Catch 22
20. Can you get an effect that makes a sound like a bass guitar plugged into an amp? If you can, I recommend you get one of those.
21. Hmmmmm, I do like these basses. I have a 60s classic player Stratocaster in sonic blue which has hardly been out of it's case since I bought it in 2006 when they originally came out. Very nice guitar made with US custom shop parts assembled in Mexico (a bit like the road worns). I could be persuaded to part with it if you wanted to trade (with some cash from my side). This is a link to loads of videos about them And part 2
22. You need to find a band with some 'hungry' band members. Either hungry for money or people who love to play. Don't get bogged down by musicians who like to 'dabble' and endlessly procrastinate. I play in one band where the members play primarily for money another for the love of playing and the 3rd is full of lawyers, doctors and financial advisers and which is a band in nothing but name, as nobody has a window in their busy schedules to actually get in a room together and play. Which is very frustrating (there's also been 19 members since it was formed 5 years ago in which time we've done about 10 gigs, which tells it's own story).
23. When I fitted my preamp I initially fitted the wires the wrong way round which resulted in a weak sound from the pickups. I realised I must have done something wrong and then swopped them around and got a much stronger punchier sound. Maybe your front pickup is wired up wrongly............just a suggestion.
24. I don't have a great love of bass amps either. I only care if it sounds good. Most of them are anonymous black boxes.I've had peaveys, hartkes, marshalls, tc electronics, fenders and ashdowns but I don't care if the black box has a prestigious name on it or not and I've played through many amps from 'uncool' manufacturers which sounded great (a Laney and a line 6 LD300 comes to mind). The only amp I ever grew attached to was my Fender TV15 which was a gorgeous looking, big tweed covered, modern reworking of the original Fender Bassman. In the end it was just too heavy for me so it had to go.
25. Citizen Cope. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c08X4vGOTBQ&feature=related
