Fender USA '62 Jazz Bass refinish at home
gjones replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in General Discussion
Let's move the earth wire into it's channel do that only a small part of the wire is left to make contact with the underside of the bridge plate Let's get the bridge plate in place Simple job now to wire the pickups and earth leads into the control plate next.
Very interesting. I have an old Japanese 'Silver Series' Squier from 1994 and it doesn't have the earthing wire coming through the little tunnel from the control cavity to the bridge it just has the earthing strip coming from under the bridge into the bridge cavity which is then soldered to the plate under the bridge pickup, just like the original early 60s Jazz Basses. Unfortunately when I removed the pickup the other day to fit a preamp I broke the solder connection and now I earth it every time I touch the treble pot on my preamp (resulting in a nasty click) which I'm going to have to sort soon before it sends me nuts. I have the feeling that your strip must be there for just cosmetic reasons as you also have the wire coming from the control cavity to make contact with the bridge like a modern Jazz. -
well i went to andertons today, and a mixed bag of a day really, i didnt like the ampeg pf500 and 1x15 cab, i tried the ashdown abm500 1x15 combo and it's sooo much louder (well to me anyway), another band member came with me, and he was instantly impressed to by the difference, it would add sooo much depth and low end to the music we play at the moment BUT then my application for finance was declined? so a bit gutted, but i know what to go for
I agree with your choice of Ashdown. I recommend you go for a head and cab as it allows you freedom to chop and change a bit. Buy secondhand if you can though as you'll usually get back what you paid.
On a similar note does anyone knoe if it's possible to buy an after market three piece jazz/P neck from anywhere? Or at least one with Carbon fibre rods?
Like this one? This ebay seller takes basses to bits and sells the parts. This is where I bought my Fender Classic Jazz neck http://www.ebay.co.u...b#ht_1044wt_698 Lots of lovely stuff..........at expensive prices. Don't forget the import tax.
Last night I dreamed I bought this and put a set of model Js, a black scratch plate and the neck off my 51 RI on it.
Putting a baseball bat neck on a Geddy Lee is blasphemy! They have the most fantastically skinny necks Fender produce.

An Ashdown EB 180 is a fantastic amp for a beginner. Cheap, reliable, light and LOUD! It has a compressor built in too. You can play at bedroom levels with it and at rock gig levels (and I have...with loud drummers). I own it's big brother now but I still take my EB out to smaller gigs and it sounds great! And the great thing is you can buy one secondhand for £100 probably from this very forum. I took an ancient set of rotos out and put them on my Precision and they sound great. The older the better for that vintage sound.

I like the bit where she sings 'You got me losing my mind' at 1.35 and she goes cross eyed.
Aye, that'll be right! Still no response to the neck plate or how I shold pay...........
That's because he's sold it to 5 other people as well. Be patient, I'm sure he'll get around to you eventually.
-
Naah, been pulled, according to the seller. He said he had some problems with his debit card!! He's offered it to me for £1800; you reckon I should go for it??
Bargain! I think you should meet him in a lonely layby in the middle of nowhere at 3am to hand over the money in cash.

It's been disappeared......................was it all a dream?
Are the rosewood ones he sells tinted too? One of those is just what I'm after.
Yes!

It's either been put on ebay by a 90 year old grandmother who found it in her attic and is totally genuine. Or It's some clueless thicko trying a cheap scam. You choose!
yep, can't get away from the 'stepped' sound as you slide. Pedals are not going to give you a true fretless slide. i did the plyers thing too. yanked out the frets having been inspired by the playing of the great, late, Mick Karn. 2 days later I gigged the bass. Never even filled in the holes left by the frets. Young and full of beans grab a Warwick rockbass fretless. one of the older ones are dirt cheap. not pretty, but a decent fretless sound and play nice.
Ha, ha, I did the same inspired by Pino Pallidino playing on 'wherever I lay my hat'. Woke up, put radio on, heard Pino do his thing, reached for set of pliers, started yanking at my frets. A few chunks of wood came away with the frets but nothing a well placed bit of sellotape couldn't fix. But seriously folks...............rotosound tru bass nylon wound strings works for me. Very DB sounding.

90's Fender P's, any one owned one? what are they like?

The 90s Japanese Precisions are pretty good. I have one. Does it have to be U.S.? -
Anyone know where i can get my jazz neck bound and blocked?
I got mine from the American Colonies http://www.ccinlays.com/
Just bought some Geddy Lee blocks for a fiver! -
Well I've had a few sets of these, and they are VERY convincing. I have asked a few basschat members who have seen them in the flesh, asked them what they thought the inlays were made of, and no-one thought they were vinyl, they were guessing MoP, abalone, etc. They are much better than you think they are.
That's interesting. I fitted my old Geddy Lee's neck to my sunburst jazz body and it looked great. The Geddy is now sold and bringing joy to another Basschatter but I bought a 99 quid Mighty Mite neck a while ago which would look great with black blocks. If you say they're actually decent quality I may give them a try. After all they're cheap as chips. -
Are the blocks on Squier VM Jazzes not stickers? Look pretty pretty convincing if they are.
I don't know. The blocks on my Geddy Lee were painted on. Looked pretty good to me. -
Have you tried them?
No, I've always fancied an inlaid neck but the cost from allparts or warmoth was too much. For about a second or two I thought of getting a set of these but I think they're a bit naff. A bit like sticking go faster stripes on your nissan micra. -
Good point, always thought of mighty mite necks as inferior!
So did I, until I bought one. £99 off ebay and the guy selling them tints them as well. Excellent quality. Makes me think I was a bit of an idiot buying a neck from a Mex Classic 60s Jazz Bass for £300 (including p&p and taxes) when I could have bought one of these instead. This is the one I bought but he sells ones with rosewood fretboards too http://www.ebay.co.u...d3#ht_500wt_949

You can always get those nasty little sticky things from Ebay that look like you've got blocks (from about 20 feet away.........in a dim room). -
£33 to see what is really only a covers band
gjones replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
I've got a friend who is a sound engineer and she's doing the sound for an Eric Clapton tribute band next weekend. She's offered to get me in for free. Having just googled the band in question, they're so mediocre, I don't think I'll bother. The same engineer got me in to see a Dutch Eagles tribute band for free a couple of years ago. They were competent enough but not good enough that I would have paid to see them. It does depend on how good the band is. If they are all sh*t hot players and give a professional show then they're worth a decent ticket price. Personally, I think £100 for the night seems a bit much though.
