This post reminded me of seeing Jools Holland and the Millionaires with the Fabulously Wealthy Tarts opening for Nine Below Zero at the Hammersmith Odeon. Thought I'd have a search for Jools with the FWT but found this interesting clip instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gUQ6jZi_h8&feature=related
Personally, I would want a bass mag the same as how I would like a TV car show. The criticism that Top Gear has come under is that it hardly reviews cars that everyday people can afford or want and only focus on the extreme supercars. Long gone has the motoring magazing show which a lot of people miss. So when I am looking at buying a car or trying to find details, I have to look over old Top Gear clips or reviews on the internet for cars like Meganes, Pug 207's, Alfa 156's etc. So I think its important that a bass mag not only covers the more unusual boutique basses but also touches on the stuff that people use everyday like Fenders and Squires. You can certainly see more people asking on the forum about pre Korean Warwick Corvettes, Squires, Fenders etc than the high end boutique basses. I just think its important to not miss out on your Ford Focus drivers as well as keeping your Ferrari Enzo drivers happy also
Got me thinking you could take a lot from the Top Gear format - Star on a Reasonably Priced Bass anyone?

A vintage bit of fretless Rickenbacker...

Loved it - going to try and persuade the band to consider it!!! -
NIce venue (but rubbish load in)! Have a good 'un Pete!

Bizarrely, this is the first sunburst Wal I've seen
Which is?
To my eyes it looks like one of those dreadful 70's plywood finishes. Sorry, don't want to upset anyone, and love the whole ethos of Wal basses, but that is what I'm seeing. -
Creating a big (12 string) sound with a 4 string bass
Mykesbass replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
Completely bonkers, but then I love a touch of eccentricity! Don't know how much use this will be, but a few years back I saw The Pretenders at a smallish gig in Kings Cross. Adam Seymour produced, to my ears, an exceptional 12 string guitar sound, but having just looked at his rig there was no chorus, just vibrato and reverb. http://vintage.guitargeek.com/rigview/332/ Obviously going to be very different for bass but food for thought none the less. If you do get it up and running, remember from a previous thread, I have a local shop with a reasonably priced copy of Neilsen's guitar!! -
Sorry for the hijack B5, but I thought you (and other funk/Prince fans) would be interested: http://funkatopia.com/funk-news/a-revolution-reunion-without-prince/ That should be a fine gig!

To my eyes there's probably a very good reason -
Nothing to do with me, just flagging this in case any of the restorers on here fancy it! http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/marshall-vba-400-valve-bass-amp-head/91688826
Actually I should have said - its not the B string that gives me the problem - its A, D and G !!
our posts crossed - I should add a further caveat - I very rarely venture as high as the G!!
-
OK, first caveat - I am not, never have been, bever will be a teacher - this is purely how it worked for me - I started off with 5 string concentrating on the fifth position and working on simple stuff like walking bass lines until comfortable effectively transposing stuff. From there I found it fairly straight forward moving down the neck, although I must admit, using open position did take a while longer. This may stem from the fact that I am not very happy playing in the open position in the first place having spent many years as a rhythm guitarist in a Big Band so playing a lot in Bb, Ab and Eb.
I think the moral is, don't buy stings in dribs and drabs, get a full set at a time then there won't be any confusion.
Agree with this - I had to replace a D string on a gig once - the difference in tone and volume from the new string was so huge and so off putting I changed the rest of the strings in the break.
Me too, posted a thread about this tone recently and am now about to add it to my repertoire.

I saw it! It inspired me to 'pick' it up. It's all your fault that my drummer said 'sounds too f****ing Nashville to me'. He is a miserable git though. He makes George Harrison seem like Timmy Mallet.
Drummers, bless 'em!
-
I've just started going the other way! After playing fingerstyle since about 1974 I've just started experimenting playing with a pick. I've always done a bit on guitar too, so (trying to do)the technique isn't new to me. I'm loving that 'clicky' sound with a roll of felt under the strings by the bridge too. I'll give you a wave as our trains pass going in opposite directions!
Me too, posted a thread about this tone recently and am now about to add it to my repertoire.
Keep them in their (hard) cases, micro-climates ftw Si
+1 to this - but I'd add a decent plastic case. I had a customer bring in a Les Paul that had been in his loft (no he wasn't an Ebayer ) for over 20 years. Was the first time in all those years that the case had been opened - one of those big old ugly 80's Gibson plastic jobs. The guitar was immaculate and ebven the strings were fresh. Also, I'm pretty sure it is sudden temperature changes that do the real damage.

WAL Basses - Thinking of taking a dip Views?
Mykesbass replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
IMO it doesn't have to be one of the well known guys doing the job - I know an excellent luthier in East Anglia - he's on the reccomended list here - who would do an exceptional job. Don't think it would be cheaper but certainly a bit quicker (and possibly nearer). PM me if you want contact details. Mike -
Free listing this weekend - time for the chancers to try it on perhaps?

When a cheapo Aria is worth 1k.....
Mykesbass replied to lemmywinks's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
What chutzpa - £3,000 for an original work of art by an artist that doesn't come up on a google search! Filed down machine heads on a £999 bass instead of a new set and out of date condoms. And by the looks of teh feedback the more expensive items don't sell! -
just the way the younger audience will follow the 40 somethings onto the flloor when you're playing young hearts.
You play "Young Hearts" at weddings? As in "What's the use of sharing this one and only life, ending up as someone's lost and lonely wife" Tell me you don't do "Band of Gold" as well?
Weather Report - 8.30
Hate this album but only because I'm the Schmuck who had tickets for the Hammersmith gig on this tour and forgot to go -
Amazing and informative, one of the best doc on a recordiong I've seen I think.
That's pretty much what I was thinking as a layman - nice to hear that someone with your reputation agrees Simon!

Nice "Imagine" documentary on BBC1 last night, based on the making of Bridge Over Troubled Water and the 1969 tour. Decent amount of interview time with Joe Osborn, but most interesting was some of the background information on the production techniques. Well worth catching on the IPlayer.
