My 19 year old nephew is a very goodt trumpeter and singer and is looking at options aside from music college. One avenue he wants to explore is cruise ships. Anyone here had any experience - how to go about getting it, is it good for development/contacts, pay & conditions etc? Thanks, Mike

Welcome to Basschat (and the midlife crisis) from another fretless convert! Cheaper than sports cars? Obviously not succumbed to GAS yet then?! Oh, and get out of that bedroom and back into a band. Cheers, Mike

Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young & Tom Jones...

Cracking post WoT. Seen loads of 60's posters with unusual bill combinations but would never have thought these guys would have played together! Thanks for posting. -
Should get the Shuker in January Then all I need is some decent medication to deal with the rheumatoid arthritis in my hands that came on in November

Well that was a lot of fun - played a little country pub for New Year's Eve, middle of nowhere. Band set up in the conservatory and a disco was set up in a marquee. Set up nice and early, then the punters started arriving. We were expecting locals, friends and family but this lot were arriving in minibuses from Eastbourne and Hailsham. 300 of them, all young enough to be our children/grandchildren!! The girls all looked like they were fresh off The Only Way is Essex. Played the first set to about 8 people including the drummer and guitarist's partners. Second set however, we got a crowd of kids rocking away to Creedence, Stones and Dylan and some serious school disco smooching going on to the slowies at the end! Great to win over a crowd like that

Steve Lawson - Why I've Taken My Music Off Spotify
Mykesbass replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
As someone else pointed out, you read it wrong - I hope they cease to exist. I have little to no concern what anyone within that particular world thinks of me. As you say, the vast likelihood is that very few people there have any idea who I am, or any inclination to find out. Steve
Apologies Steve, yep, got two words round the wrong way and completely mis-interpreted the meaning! Should have put the reading glasses on rather than rely on the contact lenses! -
...The most ball achingly annoying time wastery frustrating pursuit bleeding ever. Discuss... Merry Xmas everyone
Popped in to a local in September to be told they were phasing out cover bands as the originals bands were proving a better draw. Looked at the website this week to see wall to wall blues, classic rock etc! Either the quickest change of heart or the stink of dung!
I've tried most of the grounds out there on my fretless and have finally come back to the Rotosound solo bass as i find they have the best overall balance between tone, feel and tension. Ths D'addarios have a great sound but are just too tight for me, also they're pretty expensive. The Elites are too dull sounding, basically you might as well use flatwounds. The status ones were ok, but lacked a bit of oomph. The Rotosound are priced somewhere between the status and the D'addarios and work very well for me...
Same here on the Status v Rotosound. I found the Status too close to a full on flat wound and like the extra grunt of the Rotosounds on my fretless. Shame because the Status are an amazing price.
I'd like to see a 'music off topic' and a separate 'off topic off topic'. If you see what I mean.
Me too - you do see some non bass specific threads coming up in general bass discussion and other similar ones coming up in off topic. I'd certainly like to see them all in a general music forum. Wouldn't have any excuse for venturing into proper off topic then which would probably improve BC for me.

Steve Lawson - Why I've Taken My Music Off Spotify
Mykesbass replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
OK, not one for controversy usually, but I really feel this guy is way off the mark. From his website: "This may well be because, as this article claims, the majors have it rigged anyway. It’s certainly true that anyone paying Spotify to listen to my music is also funding the Major record labels. Labels that I hope will cease to exist before too long." "Steve Lawson – new-age, post-rock, ambient-jazz, solo-bass…" Sorry for Steve but major labels don't hope that he will cease to exist as they are probably unaware of his existence in the first place. edit for tin hat -
Do you think that "Real" Musicians era is going to end ?
Either that or the weight of all this 'good advice' has scared the living sh*t out of him, and he's hiding behind the nearest sofa.
+1 now the like button has gone -
Do you think that "Real" Musicians era is going to end ?
Mykesbass replied to MusicLover20015's topic in General Discussion
Latest figures I can find are from 2008 - recorded music sales (some guy twiddling with his Mac to paraphrase the OP) down 6%. Live music sales - real muso's going out there and playing - up 13% making the total UK music revenue up 4.7% at £3.6 billion. Also, according to UK Music's 2009 survey, the festival season alone creates 19,700 full time jobs through music tourism. Doesn't look like the end of real musicians to me! -
Of course they leave you burdened with debt. Instead of having £x to spend on things like buying a house or other trivial things, you have to spend that £x on repaying your loan. That's a debt burden in my book.
IMO, at the rates that the repayments have been set it cannot be regarded as a burden. Also, statistically, as a graduate you will end up earning significantly more throughout your working career which will easily compensate for this. Importantly, the loan does not have any effect on your credit record. I was very much in the anti student loan lobby but looked a little closer at it after hearing the guy from Money Saving Expert shed some very interesting (no pun intended) light on the subject. -

Chris2112, I've got to take issue with you here on two things: 1) the issue of student loans - they don't leave you burdened with debt, they are very sensibly worked out so that they are completely affordable and only repaid when you can afford to repay them. 2) Having been through 20 years of music industry experience then leaving and trying to get back in a few years later, yes, a music degree does count for a lot. I have fallen at the first hurdle in countless job applications where the first essential requirement is a "relevant" degree. In my opinion there will always be jobs for well trained musicians, sure, they won't be as well paid and glamorous as they were in Anthony Jackson's day but the live music industry is thriving (unlike the recorded side) and will continue to need versatile, diligent, professional players for years to come. -
Was just about to let Mike know and quickly checked it. No problem with it. http://www.purple-chili.com/ You're not after a a 2x12 are you? Got one in Kit Form, (everythiung except drivers).
Very odd - just followed your link and again was held waiting for a .ru address. Was just window shopping, may be looking for a second 112 in the new year but may come back to you then if you still have it!

Hi Guys, Just went to have a look at the Purple Chili website - word of warning, it seems to have been hijacked by a Russian site. If anyone is in touch with the guys perhaps you can alert them, in the meantime it may be wise to steer clear! Mike
Tennis elbow is from impact usually, and results in tiny tears in the tendons around the elbow and inflammation and resultant pain around the outside of the elbow. You won't be able to hold a kettle of water, or extend the fingers outwards against resistance. Rest is the treatment. How do you know you have tennis elbow?
My GP told me it was from rotational motion rather than impact - called tennis elbow because it is often caused by the arm motion associated with topspin. I got mine from commercial hedge-trimming
I get it when I play too much Golf...rest is the best answer though Tiger Balm did seem to give some relief..
Golfer's elbow - slightly different - tennis elbow pain on the outside the joint, golfer's elbow on the inside of the joint. Can I have my pedant's badge now please?

First up, love Al Jarreau, and yes, nice groove to the above, great feel in drums and percussion. Now I am not one of the All Slap is Evil brigade but I've got to say I found some of what the bass was doing here entirely surplus to requirements, even, dare I say it, a little gratuitous. On the other hand, I loved the more subtle playing at around 3.23.

I harbour a bit of a gripe over modern electronic equipment and the fact that it is now so cheap it has become a throwaway item. So old lead solder was harmful to the environment - I bet the problems the amount of X Boxes, PlayStations and Class D amplifiers that have been dumped as they cannot be repaired far outweighs the damage the lead ever did. Rant over! Check out the recommended repairers on this site, get it fixed properly and enjoy a high quality amp for a good few years!
Just stop being a smarty pants and tell us the answer!!
Sorry, wasn't the intention at all, didn't want to spoil it for those that did want to work it out. I posted because I thought it was nice that a crossword setter felt a bass player was a big enough household name to be worthy of being a crosword clue. It is of course Entwistle - as pointed out by discreet, an anagram of the first two words.
