Is it really ethical for your luthier friend to copy the design of one of these name luthiers and offer a knock-down priced version? Why not go the whole hog and see what Trade Tang can provide? As has been said here already, luthiers (even the highest paid ones) are way, way down the pecking order of un-ethical business people. I really doubt that even Fodera with their $500 scratchplate are making huge percentages as their overall net profit.

Distance selling regulations apply to second hand goods - it is the seller who is responsible for the return of the bass, especially if it is not "fit for purpose".

Slightly off topic but to get the ball rolling, I refereed an Under 13's rugby match under the watchful eye of Dean Richards whose son was playing. Don't think I've had anyone in a music setting though.

[/quote] I'm sure someone on here can do a better explanation than this, but I was taught (many years ago, during O Level music) that when you build a chord up you have larger intervals the lower down you go - i.e. Octave between first two notes, then root, fifth root, third, fifth, root and then put your 6's 7ths etc up the top end. Therefore, any pitch effects lower down can be a bit disturbing. Having said that, chorus is probably one of the more popular bass effects and can sound great when there is the sonic space for it.

Amazing how often it doesn't get picked up and he has to point it out!

You need to start trawling the for sale secton - sure there's a lot of expensive gear on there but at the moment, for example, Psychocandy has a 4x10 Laney combo up for £165 leaving you plenty from your budget for a decent s/h bass on here.

Trouble is, even different versions of the Fender Jazz differ quite substantially, so you need to narrow down your benchmark, as a modern Standard US Fender is probably quite different in sound (it certainly is in spec) to a 62 re-issue. Therefore, it is quite possible that a high end copy sounds more like an old Jazz than the modern Fender.

Posted a Meters track here a while ago, having heard them on Craig Charles' show - just got a Best Of from Amazon - don't know how I've spent so long being a music fan and never knowing of these guys - that stuff is soooooo funky, highly recommended, but then you probably all knew that already

From there, you can now factor in condition and the supply and demand - pretty sure 5 stringers don't hold their value quite as well a 4, but I may be wrong. Also depends how badly the other party wants to do the trade, so you could probably be looking at going in at 4 string price and working your way up if you have to.

Taking new list prices, 5 string Fender Jazz is 1.35 times as expensive as a 4 string. Hopefully that can give you a starting point taking used 4 string prices on here.
