Not the purest of Reggae but how about some of the Sly & Robbie Grace Jones material - Private Lives, My Jamaican Guy etc?

Great to hear Wunjo are expanding - raved about them a few times on here. They seem pretty straight and done a couple of good commission deals and one straight sale with them.

Not just musicians having to work for nothing - internships, work placements, "volunteer" border agency staff.... I work for an education charity and we rely on volunteers, mainly from the world of engineering to help at our events - they all really enjoy it and help out regularly, so I guess if the circumstances are right, playing for nothing could be OK.

Picked up the new copy because of this thread and also because I know of Joel's work from my previous life at a record company. Much improved, and great to see Michael McKeegan in there - great player and really nice person to boot. Nice to see some negative comments in reviews and a good spread of articles. One criticism Joel, could you set the cliche monitor to a slighly higher setting please!

Sorry, two drummers lost? You haven't even started yet!! We do a (semi) un-plugged four piece for a couple of pubs that don't want a full band, goes down really well.

I couldn't get insured for years by some o fthe main companies as I worked in a record company. Ended up with Privilige, which although a sister company of Direct Line will do the higher risk insurance (and charge you for it)! Many of the major players do specifically nclude anyone working in ANY part of the music industry, so again, I think honesty is painful but the only way.

Check out Yardbirds in Grimsby - amazingly friendly Biker's Bar with dormitory accomodation.

OK, I'm de-cluttering, and whilst I do like jazz and am keeping a lot of it, I have a load of stuff collected for previous job. Some were for mastering compilations so only been played in a mastering studio. A lot of the cases are a bit tatty but all discs should be pretty perfect. Old - Basie/Ellington back to the 20's New - John Schofield, Martin Taylor, Steve Coleman Lots of Concord, Fantasy/OJC, some Blue Note, some RCA Victor. I have a full list - mail me: For sake of BC rules, looking for £1.50 a disc, + £1.00 for each extra in a box set (i.e. £3.50 for a three CD set) and would really like to knock out in 5's or so, plus postage. Anyone want to make a lowball for the lot please do! Cheers, Mike

Mackie Thump 12" - light as a feather, really nice sound and we use them as FOH for our acoustic(ish) gigs.
Great little clip from VW, I did like that. I must be odd though because I thought that 'wrong' note sounded interesting from the start Perhaps that says something about my own playing.
No, you're just a Jazz fan

If it wasn't for a 5.30 start the next morning I'd be there - probably the Basschat band I want to see most - catch you next time!

So who's playing a Jubilee gig? :)
Mykesbass replied to Zoe_BillySheehan's topic in General Discussion
Played my second one of the weekend, local pub last night only to have it slightly overshadowed when my wife texted me to tell me my old mate and drummer from school days (35 years ago) was on television - playing outside the Palace -
A really stupid amp comparison question...
Mykesbass replied to fretmeister's topic in Amps and Cabs
Don't know if you are anywher near BassGear but I popped in and tried their Carvin head, AB'd it against an Aguilar and far preferred it. Then Vic told me it cost £369!! Not a super light mini amp but much lighter than the Hartke. Mike -
Try those silk gloves Nigel's gone on about in the past and then you can go all Spinal Tap!! I did put flats (not Thomastic) on an acoustic once - quiet but vey lovely.

SOLD http://photobucket.com/mykesbassCort Having recently had my perfect bass built for me by Jon Shuker it is time to move on my Cort. This is one of the last of the Korean builds, has a fabulous white see through finish on ash body, Mighty Mite MM and Jazz pick-ups, 9v Active, loads of EQ control including mid boost switch. Licensed Hipshot machine heads, Neutrik locking jack input and strap-locks. I had Jon Shuker put an ebony fretless board on which has dot side markers and is currently strung with RotoSound pressure wounds to give a compromise between flats and roundwounds, something that works for me but isn't everyone's cup of tea. Sorry, but as Jon hasn't been able to supply me a case for the new bass yet this is being sold without one. Also, as it is a bit of an unusual bass I'd prefer not to send but for potential buyers to try before they buy. Current non customised Chinese versions of this bass are selling for about £450, over £100 less than the Korean models retailed at. I'm looking for £350 or may be interested in a lightweight head with valve pre-amp. Thanks, Mike

Does anyone know how basses are sold each year ?
Mykesbass replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
Questions already been asked, but where do they all go. Think how many basses have been produced in the last say 50 years by Fender alone, awhere are they ? why are (say) 70s Precisions so rare ? OK I can understand music shops saying theyre not worth much when taking them as part exchange etc, but I cant see that many actually ending up in skips. Must be millions in lovely old tweed hardcases sat lofts and under beds, with ageing owners like me thinking......Someday !
But if we knew the answer to this then nobody could list their appaling 70's Fender as "rare" -
Popped in to Bass Gear today - had three meetings in Oxford and the middle one blew me out so I had a couple of hours to kill. Vic obviously has taken on board everything that has been said on here about Phil, before he even asked if there was anything I wanted to buy he made me a cuppa! Had a good chat and then tried a couple of heads, very keen on one (possibly the cheapest in the shop) and will return with my bass to try it in a couple of months. Really refreshing to see no pressure whatsoever, no worries that I wasn't here to buy on the spot. Oh, and as I play five string fretless, the bass I was given to try the amp was a £4,000 F Bass! Top shop, and two absolute gentlemen. Will be back when the money is in the bank!
Duck signed my ticket after we had a chat about Fender necks (P v J) and how he missed playing with Al Jackson.
Had a really busy weekend so only just seen this really sad news. Buzzy, I met him with Cropper and Booker T (and Taj Mahal) at the end of the night one year at Bishopstock. Al Jackson Was the main topic of conversation for all of them an how it wasn't the same without him.
(I know! Funk and snooker!)
Sorry Matt, can't answer your question but Snooker and Funk - Steve Davis is one of the UK's best know Jazz-Funk fans - was much derided for it back in the day!!
