1. Emperor's New Clothes? Surely this man is the Emperor's tailor: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/190191-guess-who/
2.
Thanks, at least I know I won't be let down whichever guitar I buy. On a slightly unrelated note, I have a couple of guitars in mind and as I'm a beginner, I could do with some pointers! I have my eye on either the Pacifica 112V, Pacifica 120H or the Pacifica 212V. They all seem like good guitars of course, but I'm not sure whether the slight variations would make a difference.
They've really been playing around with the pick-up configurations - used to all be the same, two single coil and one humbucker. That is probably the version you want, humbuckers on a Strat style guitar is a bit of an acquired taste. The 212 just looks like another £39 for some fancy finish - may be a photo flame top, so I'd go with the 112V. Great guitars for the money, shame they've messed up the range as the old more expensive models were fantastic, not very popular so therefore often could be bargains. (I used to own a guitar shop and sould uqite a few of these just to let you know where and how I formed my opinion).
3. Greatly neglected bit of politics from Simon & Garfunkel - think I've only heard this on the radio once (some may say once too often but I love this)! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgYFXCUEL4Y
4.
Shops should be discouraged from taking the p*ss out of customers.
There is another side to this - all those shops (that we bemoan are fast disappearing) that have to hold stock and allow us grimy musicians in to play their instruments for us to then turn around and say "this is ex-demo" or "yes I like this but can I have a boxed one" or worst of all, "yes, I like this but I'll buy it from GAK/Thomann/A.N.Other". Instruments are not like TV's, fridges etc, they are all that bit different and we should be going in to shops to try out and find the one we like best. The fact that the scratchplate covering is marked is the whole point the covering is on there in the first place! Ex music shop owner rant over !
5.
I hate every second until we get up on stage and start playing. Anxiety!
No anxiety but yes, I hate this time - complete waste - would rather get started right away and play longer sets.
6. Curbow's are an acquired taste - I really wanted to like one but didn't. I went for the Squier VMJ Fretless to start with for the very good reason that moving it on was painless and a very small depreciation. It was a very OK bass (sorry, not meaning to damn with faint praise) but I did move on quite quickly getting a fretless board on my Cort GB75 and then on to a custom built Shuker 5 string which is now my only bass.
7. Got to be this if it has been released by then: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mr-P-C-Chambers-Popular-History/dp/1845536363/ref=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1354823408&sr=1-9 (just keeping in with the Mods)
8.
The man on the Clapham omnibus would probably only notice if the missing bass player was the frontman or the main song writer. The hard core fanboy is a different matter.
Got to agree entirely. I was with a work experience pupil from the Brit school a few years back who was surprised to learn that Eric Clapton played guitar!!
9. Just did a great swap with Keith, I'm now the proud owner of Lozz196's old GS1 and my Epiphone Joe Pass is on its way to play some jazz standards in La Belle France. Keith bent over backwards to make sure the swap between here and there was completely painless. Now I just hope he loves the Epi as much as I love the GS1! Thanks Keith.
10. What's the term for a Moderator Troll?!
11.
One with this on the fingerboard
So that counts out fretless necks then
12.
Now you've reminded me I've got Carvin GAS. D'oh.
Not a bad type of GAS to have considering the price - I'm still loving mine! Go on - join the club
13. Neither of them would win the X Factor just proving that music should never be a competition. (very minor rant over)
14.
Could be, of course, that our hero doesn't give feedback.
He's left 784 so far - adds to your theory.....
15. I heard the SM58 and SM58 Beta AB'ed at a soundcheck in a decent theatre and was very surprised how much better the Beta was.
16. Traynor - their valve heads look like great value for Canadian built gear and have brilliant user reviews on Harmony Central. The only "UK" dealer is Thomann
17. Yes, big +1 to Flyfisher - take a listen to Brian Matthews "Sounds of the 60's" one Saturday morning just to realise what is now regarded as a golden era of popular music had dross by the bucketload!
18.
It's a fantastic shop with fantastic people, well worth the trip!
+1 Now bought a cab and a head from Phil and Vic - brilliant service and will be my first choice for anything else I need.
19. Any oddball swaps/trades out there for a very lovely but now unused jazzer?
20. Traded with Leschirons for a Gordon Smith GS1 - Selling my old Jazz Guitar - it is a very nice 90's Samick Korean Epiphone Emperor Joe Pass with replacement Seymour Duncan in the neck position and Schaller locking machineheads (to replace the originals that tarnished really quickly). Very nicely set up with 012 D'addario Chromes and original hard case. Looking for around £300 which is what the last one went for on Ebay (without the upgrades) or will consider all sorts of weird and wonderful trades/swaps - solid 6 string, 15" bass cab, small guitar valve combo, Peavey T40 Bass (yes, long shot I know), decent microphone etc. Pics up here: http://s1137.beta.ph...ne%20Joe%20Pass
21. Was gigging last night with my gorgeous Shuker 5 string fretless tele style bass and kept looking down hallucinating that I had a T40 in my hands - never played one but remember them as a kid when they and the T60's came out and always loved them. Now that's what I call GAS Now if anyone fancies swapping one for an Epiphone Jazz guitar......
22. May sound a bit silly but I like the fact that these guitars don't try too hard to be an acoustic guitar and, at least the early ones, have a distinctive sound of their own, unlike the modern breed of electro's which chase the holy grail of acoustic tone and never quite get there.
23. Precision style with a Jazz pick-up should get the alarm bells ringing.
