2. The absolute epitome of cool. My god, has it really been 24 years?
 3. I must remember not to smile when I play in future. I don't want to look self-indulgent.
 4.
HI, I am seeing your bass on Web and want it. I have £150 I know that is lower than your starting cost but I am quite poor and like basses I think it is good to help poor people can I have your bass for that cost or lower please/?
Oh yes. That's an absolute belter  I see no problem with using an auction sniper if I know that I'm not going to be on line at the time the auction finishes -- e.g. during working hours, or at 2 in the morning or something.
 5. Oh yes, big Tony Fisher what a fantastic live band.
 6.
Ha ha, Marks voice sounds really good! He did well to hit those high notes. The Heathrow inspired fills and groove are nostalgic too.
Yup, his voice has rarely if ever sounded better. And the Heathrow-esque feel to the bassline is great... reminds you of the old days... Yes it's cheesier than the Dairylea factory, but who cares? Made me smile
 7. That's an absolute belter you've got there. Love the h/stock design, a cool twist on the old favourite. Is that an East preamp?
 8.
Not very seasoned here. Link? Or summary if it's from a site no longer in operation? Or PM if it's contentious?
Back when the multi-drivered Jones stuff was The Next Big Thing, one of the guys here started a 'Good or crap? Discuss' thread looking for opinions. Mr. Jones presumably googled his name (hence my reluctance to use his full moniker) and came across this thread, and immediately launched into the OP in a big way -- you obviously know nothing about amps, who the fck are you anyway, I've got loads of big names playing my stuff and you're just an insignificant nobody, etc etc. Thus instantly alienating pretty much this entire community and losing a few thousand potential customers, thanks to his breathtaking arrogance.
 9. Some of the more seasoned people here will remember how a certain Mr. P. Jones (he of the dalek cabs) reacted to criticism a few years back...
 10. The reviews on HC are of tremendous value. They have made me larf my nads off on many a dull afternoon.
 11. Synth bass can be great, and so yes go for it I reckon. Many moons ago I had an old Roland SH-09 mono synth which I used for bass... big fat (sorry, phat) Moogesque noises, god it was great. How much do I wish I still had it.
 12. The tone he gets from that old violin bass is almost enough to make me want to breathe some life back into my old Höfner Artist bass. What a great sound. It can't all be down to the Mesa rig.
I laughed my head off at a friend's status on Facebook last night. He was arguing about why such an amazing music icon should be on such a show that idolises karaoke and non-originality (his words not mine) when a young girl he obviously knows suddenly wrote: "Karaoke? Well Macca is no better. He got up and sang a Guns 'N' Roses song". At first I thought it was sarcasm, until I read her responses when people tried to correct her. Classic!

PMSL
PMSL2
 13. I saw Rush at the NEC in 1989 and couldn't hear the bass. Not a single note. Saw them there again on the R30 tour, and the sound was brilliant for such a barn of a venue. I saw Yes at St. David's Hall in Cardiff a couple of years back, we were towards the front on Chris Squire's side and all I could hear for much of the gig was his backline thundering away... when he jumped on the bass pedals, I thought I was going to lose a filling. On my way back from a 'comfort break', I paused by the desk to see how it sounded... oh it was lovely. A perfect mix of everything. I wish to god we'd been sitting up there rather than down the front.
 14. Surely volume is measured in cubic metres..?
 15.
The british equivalent,BGM is getting worse
Blimey, we must be reading a different BGM. I think it's getting better every month.
This month: 28 pages of adverts against 45 pages of editorial.
Outrageous. There is no excuse for that.
Actually, I take it back, it is quite a good magazine, for lining the hamsters cage with.
A Dibley farmer writes: "I like Bass Player magazine. It's not too rough on the buttocks."
 16. My Status had a few dings when I got it, so I don't mind if it picks up a few more. Shuker and Wal are another matter though... regular cleaning and well protected.
 17.
Yeah, my only hope of sneaking it by customs would be to bring it back personally I guess.. "yes Mr Customs & Excise Man, it's been with a friend who has been touring with it and did some repair work for me too.."
That won't cut any mustard with them either, unless you can demonstrate that you bought it in the UK (e.g. a receipt). Otherwise they'll sting you for duty anyway. C&E are very powerful, and they know it.
 18. And don't try to fool them by declaring the value as £200 or something. They ain't daft, unfortunately.
 19.
Thing to do is to treat it as a paid rehearsal, that's what we do.
Likewise.
 20.
What do you mean by 'HDSQ's'? I'm crap with acronyms-only just sussed what 'LOL' means.
Hairy Dairy Sex Queen
 21. Dextrous, musical picking impresses me. Speedy sweepy nonsense does not, however.
I use what's appropriate, which is fingers 95% of the time.
Ditto. I'll use whatever works best for the song... fingers, thumb, pick, gerbil, whatever. I remember doing a studio sesh once, and the producer asked me if I'd mind using a pick as the tone might work better. The way he asked it was almost apologetic, as if he thought I might find the suggestion offensive. He seemed quite amazed when I told him I was happy to do so and whipped out my Dunlop (ooer missus). Do we as bassists have a reputation of generally hating picks or something?
 22.
Hi Rich, I'm going to turn this into a useful example. Let's say that when you were looking at your Nemesis you were also looking at another cab. Here's the specs for the Nemesis (assuming this is the right model 15, they've been through a few different models): Power Handling 250 Watts RMS Freq. Response 38hz - 18khz Impedance 8Ω Sensitivity 100dB SPL@1W1M Weight 42lbs
Mine's the older one with a slightly different spec, but that's not really relevant
And lets say you were looking at another cab with the following specs: Power Handling 350 Watts RMS Freq. Response 35hz - 18khz Impedance 8Ω Sensitivity 101dB SPL@1W1M Weights 48lbs So you might think so yourself, well the latter cab is a bit more powerful, a bit more sensitive and goes a bit lower, so it's worth the extra weight. But let's assume that Vd was also quoted. For the Nemesis = 350cc For the Brand X cab = 250cc This means that despite the Nemesis looking like it'll be less loud and fat according to the original (and very open to marketing abuse) specs, it will actually produce greater low frequency SPL. Alternatively you could have an excursion limited power handling figure added to the specs (which would be likely to show the Nemesis as having more) or a true low frequency sensitivity figure (ditto). The product of these two figures would show the Nemesis as having better performance. Alex
Aha. So to use a motoring metaphor, judging a cab purely on things like sensitivity and frequency is a bit like judging a car purely on horsepower and 0-60 time... the first car has more horse and a quicker 0-60, but when you look closely at the second car it has more torque and a better 30-70 time, which in reality is far more useful. Have I got that right?
