I've had a J bass before, a p bass and a PJ. I now have two P basses, a 4 string usually strung with flats and a 5'er with round wounds. The 5 string does have a cool tone control that can mimic a jazz type sound (does a mid scoop when fully CW, neutral at 12 o'clock and tapered to tone fully off like a regular tone from noon to fully CCW) so I'm halfway there if I need to do slap style stuff - which I don't - maybe some disco octaves if pushed but I don't subscribe to the Ike Turner "Hit it like you love it but it's done you wrong!" school of thought. I keep thinking I should own a J bass as I do like the sound and it's a little different, maybe even a bit more exotic than the P. In saying that I bought some new rounds for my P4 yesterday gave everything a quick tweak, lowered the action a bit checked the intonation and gig'd it last night. Delightful results! Worked for every song from The Clash, some Irish Trad, bit of Ska. I do prefer the rounds with a bit of drive and for me the change of strings was enough to make the bass sound different and 'new'. To be fair it's the first time I've played this bass with rounds through a recently aquired amp too so that was exciting for me too. Yup geek alert! I have two main 'gigs' and I use the 5er for one as it's a choir thing so the keys of songs are often always changed and my other pub gig I use the 4 as its a longer gig. My feeling is on the ballands being able to hit those really low ringing notes on the 5'er has a deeper impact than if it were a p or a j. Sometimes the weight of the note is more important especially if there is a key change somewhere - being able to go lower is classic ballad bass territory! As some one else said - experiment with strings first as that could do wonders for the vibe your after and if that doesn't cut it get a decent Squire version of what you think you should be playing - if it works upgrade from there if you need to as either P or J or will do the job as either or has recorded 99.9% of the music we're playing or emulating. Oh and the punters wont care either way. So long as they're dancing and having a good time then the bass you're playing is doing the job.

I run my comp in the loop of a Basswitch - wonderful pedal if you have the space on your board, especially if you play DB as it has an input impedance selector so you really get the most from piezo pick ups. dannybouy I always considered the PC-2A to be like plugging into the 60's - like a good old studio console. I just heard it as a plush bloom to notes with great bottom and it just added a 'vintage quality' to my p bass. Now I have a better understanding of how studio's and studio gear works I think I meant the bass just sounded like it was 'mixed' to sit in the mix. Bloom and bottom for all the grooves! It'd be interesting to hear how that bloom worked with an upright.

I played a Nexus something or other in Guitar Guitar and thought it sounded good. Can't remember which one but it basically had everything you'd need live or in the studio - heaps of I/O and a lot of control on the front panel. I recall thinking there's a lot of stuff for the money as well as it just sounding good!

The big box cali is great but the bass specific features of the CB are really cool. I made the switch and while I miss the big footprint, well it does look pretty cool, the dry blend and HPF are kinda cool to play with. Be great if you could A/B the two. I was gonna get the big box TX but found a work arouond with a second pedal which had a TX in it. I'm really happy with how they sound!

Maybe more than you need but there is a Basswitch IQ DI for sale on here. It'll let you have two channels one with 4 band eq, one without eq, (you can also plug in two basses and switch between them) it has a transformer DI out, dual fx loops one series one parallel. One of these loops has a phase switch to make sure the pedals are in phase and is blendable with your clean signal. Oh yeah and you can switch it on of off and there's a mute switch. Super versatile unit and great as a 'control centre' on your pedal board. I'm not selling the one on here but I do own one and it's a fantastic unit. If it's in your budget you'll be getting a heck of a lot for your money. Here it is in context on my board. The bass plugs into the HPF/LPF (red pedal)>Broadcast> Basswitch input. The Cali 76 is always on in one loop and the Bass Soul Food is in the blend loop. It's a cool name for sure and I get the connection. It's a fine bass and you'd think Fender would have been all over this rather than the Dimension which lets face it is a terrible name for anything!

I think RayJay or JayRay is a better name for this style. Can you pm me with the ballpark price? Really quite tempted to do this style of bass. Thinking Nordy Bigman and a Darkglass tone capsule eq. #Mahoosive
