just imagine we are one big european super state.... no taxes across borders!
If only we had the will...
If I did happen upon a can I would consider it a sign and go buy a lottery ticket
I would also take it as a sign and marry you... then sue for custody of said can.
You forgot to mention that score doesn't tell you where to put your fingers on a bass It only tells you what note to play, hence you need to do some working out and it's harder to sight read. Using a combination of tab and score simultaneously I find it very easy to sight read relatively complex basslines purely because I'm taking the best of both worlds.
Whilst charic has lost his delightful avatar, he has nonetheless found the secret of using tab as a learning tool - because, let's face it, it can be great in combination with the written music. I regularly used to use it to test and see if I'd worked the music out correctly.

I now take "Mint" to mean "I would like to sell you my instrument very, very much" - and nothing more. I would like to see more moderation of the For Sale forum, if only to ensure some consistent standards - if only to ensure we have quality ads. I certainly wouldn't advocate BC becoming actively involved in sales; and I think I might be a lone voice in calling for some attention to that forum. I'll second any call for a grading table - we could quickly add that up as Sticky. But yes, as Dood notes: ultimately, the buck stops with you, the buyer. You need to ensure that "mint" in the advert adds up to what "mint" means in your hands or in your head. And, if you disagree vehemently, don't do the deal. That said, if a seller did make you drive for hours to discover the difference in your definitions, I think you'd be quite within your rights to discuss your common understanding of other words, such as: twat, cock, dickhead, etc
That broke my heart, I was a big Tab Clear fan. Apparently the only one!
That's two of us. Can there be some final cans out there? Just how long does the stuff keep for, anyway?

No, not gloomy - all good things to think about. My only other comment came on the back of previous "know your worth" - in that it's easier to work things out if you know how much you want to be earning. You'll know your current bills/mortgage now, and your existing income and what it leaves you to play with; probably a very good starting point to say right, I want to earn X - and then work out how from there.

No comment to make on the move from being a salaried employee to a self-employed musician - I haven't done so, myself, so it would feel a little disingenous to be lecturing you on it! However, I do have some experience of running my own business.

Keep a tight rein on your financial affairs - know where your money is, and what funds you can call upon in emergency/investment, etc; and always, always, keep one eye on the tax man
Ensure you have credible plans to generate income - and consider diversification, where you see risk; as others have said, you want to ensure you're making a living, but without having all your eggs in one basket. Be honest about your worth and how long it will take to make any money on a given piece of work
Finally, some sage advice/commentary from my father-in-law: "I used to wake up each morning, and think to myself 'I haven't made any money yet' - and that thought would set me off for the day". I think that's probably a great mindset to have Best of luck, chief!

Coca Cola got rid of Tab in 1994, just to prove that it can be done.
I saw a guy playing a SUB... with the original p/g. O_o
The last time I was in a park, I saw a guy playing with his willy. I assume he was also a Fender endorsee.

Why don't you just camp out on Basschat, like the rest of us? Sadly, I don't think bringing a bass into the office would be practicable.

Seconded. I'm in the gym 3-4 times a week. You don't need to go for hours on end and flog yourself into the ground - as long as you're in there and getting a sweat on, you're doing yourself some good at least. I've had a bit of a heavy weekend, wracking up the beers on Sat; and then out for dinner on Sunday, so I feel like a blob this morning. Doesn't take long to shift, however.

Awesome. I've already made sweet love to it.

I didn't hear a lot of Muse in that clip, I'll admit. I've been disappointed with the last couple of albums. A couple of good tracks, and then a lot of material which vacillates somewhere between bombast and pretentiousness. I think I need to listen to it
I'm more pissed off with people who think they can tell others what they should do in there spare time.
Bingo.

Well, as we all know, Jerry Seinfeld has his problems with his language and other cultures

You'll get it in the end, lah. I know on Talkbass they're either one end of the spectrum or the other, either all smiles or throwing down like internet hardmen... we're a different breed. We take the piss from the word go, and you're going to get some of it. Just think of it like a big game of tag, or something, as the banter goes round; and don't get too hung up on it. I remember Reggie Hunter pulling a few of these differences into the light... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oce28VRfY7k
Anyhooo... this is the best I've ever heard a Ric sound:
Oh yeah, loving a bit of Om! Of course, he was rocking the Ric sound back in Sleep too - it's been a bit of a staple in stoner rock circles for some time, looking at Sleep, Kyuss, etc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj9IAvv32wE

Mugs? Mainly, as I could sit and advertise the forum, the amount of tea I drink in the office Lanyard sounds good (could never get into the building without my pass, so why not). Only comment was that my XL Polo really was XL. Costing me a fortune in kebabs to nail the fitted look
The older you get the more you realise the P is already almost the king of tone, (Ray just knocks it off )
There you go! Save up and get a Stingray, and bypass the years of wandering in the bass wildernress! If only I'd know, I could have saved thousands
Mel, sorry if this sounds a bit off, but given the situation you're in at the moment in your bad luck thread, would you not be better off squirreling that money away just in case? I don't know how big or small it was, but maybe it might be the first step in getting the f*** out of the area you live in, then you have a plan to work towards which will lift your spirits and get you a more relaxed life when it comes to fruition. That said, the temptation to treat oneself can be overwhelming, but it doesn't last, and nor does the pleasure of acquisition. However, great news you got a bonus at the exact time you needed it! That could not have been better timed!
Ditto. I think it's great news, and obviously reflects some superb effort - so there was a silver lining to that cloud you were telling us about! I'd pocket it for now. See how it goes

Could well be the same issue, then - I'm also at work, where the machinations of IT remain a well-guarded, and oft-negelected, mystery!
