"Multi-dimensional bass techniques"? I'm assuming that includes Dimension X, where Shredder and Krang both agree that this gash is actually listenable, owing to the strange nature of this alien world? If not, allow me to deploy some subjectivity, and state that it's f***ing awful.

Guys, this should give you a bit more of a sense! Sorry they're such bad shots, bit of a quick effort with the iPhone - hopefully you can see the lift to the rear of the bridge. As I said, the playing seems ok... sure new bridge would sort, which I'd like to put in if I'm keeping (change all hardware bar the GB70 style tuners).
They do have a very open grain. Here's what I did with a '78 body recently. I made the conscious decision to not fill the grain and make a feature of it.
Sil and Outshined make good points - done well, this can be a fantastic feature. Perhaps sell the body on and reinvestment the monies in something more appropriate for your needs?

I can post one tonight. The main body of the bridge has four screw holes - all four are flush with the body, though the rear most screw under the G string appears to attempting to pull away. At the rear of the bridge is a kind of 'high mass' block - through which the strings feed, and the saddles connect. It's this part which is bending upwards, assumedly under the tension. The angle is may 3-5 degrees. Sufficient to create a small gap between bridge and body. Whilst I want a new bridge, this does seem an oddity. Playability is fine, and considering I paid a £100, I have no issues.

Picked up a bargain bin bass at the weekend, with a view to applying some TLC. The only issue currently is that the bridge appears to be trying to lever itself away from the body. I'm assuming this is a combination of a bridge material which might well be tin, and some exigency of the bass' original set up. Was looking for some advice - specifically, what part of the setup works to generate this? Are there some good tips for avoiding? I was looking to ship the original out for a new Gotoh, as am rather fond of those, so it's a good excuse - but also an opportunity to learn something.

Nice job. What paint did you use Wayne? Do you add a clear coat on top (looks like not)?

Was this in the build thread?! If so, I missed it... and am really sorry, as it looks like a superb piece of work! -

I think I might cope with the Windows, as I doubt I'm cool enough for a Mac. Thanks for all the recommendations!!! Assuming you chaps with the recommendations are regular users - any tips for building reasonable drum tracks?
-
I might have missed this, but was looking for recommendations around a decent software for simulating drums. I'm finding myself doing a lot more of the writing now, and it would be nice to be able to put some drum ideas onto my recordings alongside the bass. How would I best go about this? Would prefer a software to a hardware solution! Thanks BC.
After reading many threads on bass players returning to play in bands again i decided it was time to get back on the road myself after a 15yr gap. Found a fully formed rock band who were looking for a replacement bass player. (Vox, Gtr, keys, drms) all ex-pros with good gear and very competent musicians. Quite daunting in itself. ! Learned the audition tracks, went for the audition / rehearsal and was offered the job there and then. I was over the moon and great to be playing with a full band again. I realised just how much i had missed being part of a band. The band were delighted so i guess polishing up on my technique and learning new styles during my absence must have paid off after all. The best part is we all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon session. If it wasn't for all you guys in the B.C. family i probably wouldn't have bothered looking so many thanks to all who read this PS a special mention to Cetera. Saw them live in Lanark and thought " i wanna play live again" Thanks mate. Cheers Dave
Post of the day. Brought a smile, good to see someone so enthused
Really wish I could make it. Dave is probably my biggest influence
Ditto - too big an ask for a schoolnight for me, sorry lads. Hope it goes great, Dood. Would be good to hear. -
Last night our singer told me that the bass player in his old band wasn't a patch on me. He said he was good but couldn't do that "slap thing".
As an aside to this thread, an interesting correlation between bassists and lovers... oh yeah, baby, you're the best.
I agree with this. Also,I find it difficult to listen to a suggestion from a player who I have never heard play anything but simple crotchet/quaver basslines. For me,it's like I've said in the past...Do you play a simple line because it's the best thing to play for what you are doing,or do you play it because it's the only thing that you can play?
Would you take a suggestion from someone, then, who's shipped hundreds of thousands of records? Even acknowledging limitations, if one may suppose they exist, it's no mean feat; and hard to balance. Even if it is all that they can play, they've still achieved - right? Found an interesting little vid, a good point at the end, which I'm guilty of - that's my "is this it?!" moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCPy_57z4_w
It seems a common riposte to those who express a dislike for slap bass in '80s fusion-sounding music is that they're 'jealous'. I don't like that stuff myself, I think it's pretty cheesy, but I don't think I'm jealous of slap bassists. I do wonder if the boot is sometimes on the other foot though? When you see bassists who haven't spent hours and hours working on fringe techniques like slapping become successful, are you jealous of them? Players who perhaps don't even practice at all, but they make music that lots of people love. I would imagine it's quite galling if you've dedicated hundreds of hours of diligent practice to techniques that you'll only get to show off on Youtube. Kim Deal for example. I think the stuff she plays is sublime, but it's obviously not technically hard to do, she's a fine example of taste over technique. Does it piss off the macho slappers to see someone like that playing to audiences of thousands all over the world when the slap players can only get gigs at trade shows?
Can we name and shame? I'd pick out the chap from Feeder - some massively simple lines in, but they work in concert with the band; and they've had some good success with it. I don't know if it's jealousy. I do stand in rehearsal when working on new stuff and think "is that it?!" when writing new material. I'm possibly being harsh on myself, but there's some condecension there, definitely.
Righty, fun with WD-40 and coke
You were in the pub on Friday? I'd second the above, that belongs in the bin I'm afraid. Hope you get it off okay, so to speak.

Yeah. Massive scam. Reply to him from several different e-mial addresses, then tell him you're at sea and suggest you meet off the coast of Somalia for a ship-to-ship transfer.
Tune your B to A and your E to D. Copy their drop tuning, it's the simplest solution and you'll pick it up easily enough, much more so than if you have DEADGC.
I think this is more like it - simply tune the E to a D.

Very nice, congrats Dan.
ESP 5-strings have pretty narrow spacing.
There was a stunning ESP Horizon 5'er on here, but I would have needed to sell a bollock or trade something I'd regret. Beautiful bass

Deaver has a nice Epiphone non-reverse Thunderbird 5'er in the For Sale section - it used to mine, and has a narrow string spacing. I don't recall the Spectors having a particularly narrow string spacing.
