1.
It could be argued that you generally don't see the clothes you're wearing, or the car you (may) drive around in... etc.
I drive an old Mondeo and predominately wear jeans, t-shirt and trainers (none of which have logos on)...what can I say
2. I'm not worried about nut width or fretboard radius, however, profile wise I much prefer a slim profile (depth). I had a Rockbass Corvette a while back. They have a 38mm nut but the neck is like a bass ball bat. I found it horrid and almost unplayable. (there was a long list of things I came to hate about that bass). My hands aren't small but neither are they very flexy so to speak.
3. Regards cabs painted in TuffCab paint. It may not look 'pretty' however, really it's just makes it look like black box like all other black boxes, which for most of the time we have our backs turned to. My latest cab is covered in the stuff, if it looked crap the wife would have said so. Unlike the well gigged and tolex torn 410 I had until recently, that I would have had to pay someone quite a bit of cash to recover to look decent again, with TuffCab I can buy a pot of it on ebay and 'repair' any blemishes myself. I don't believe the covering actually effects the tone of the cabinet either, although I might be wrong.
4.
Well I'm glad this topic has sparked such interest, it is indeed a great time to be a bass player! *Update* Had a gig in Brighton tonight so I stopped by the BF factory to try out some cabs. First thing I'll say is that the guys at BF are super nice and passionate about what they do, which is always a plus. Following recommendations, I tried my Markbass Momark 500 through a Supertwin and the Two 10. Both great cabs all around - lightweight, powerful and wonderful tone . My only reservation is that I have been playing a 2x10 with an adjustable tweeter for the past 4 years so naturally I was missing a bit of sparkle. The 2x10 was slightly more appealing as it goes up to a higher freq range than the Supertwin. It might just be something I need to get used to so I'm going to spend more time checking out the full range
Great stuff. Always the best way. We can all chip in with what sounds good, but ultimately everyone's preferences and tastes are different.
5. All the bods, Vanderkley, Bergantino, Genzler, Barefaced, TKS and there's probably one I've missed, will all have a 2x12 black box (in some cases in other pretty colours) that will satisfy the OPs needs in terms of volume and weight. Which one anyone chooses is entirely a matter of personal taste, tone is an individual thing. How someone sounds is up to them, there's no right or wrong.
6.
Zoom B1ON Bargaintastic - aux in, headphone out, looper, drum machine and a bunch of decent amp models and fx Not as plasticky as you think it will be - seems really tough All for £40
This ^
7. All the local festivals have pretty much the same bands, just in a different running order. The slightly larger festivals tend to book big name bands I've never heard of. As a punter they don't interest me. And none of the bands I've been in, as is the case for so many others, have known the right people to get on the bill...it all gets stale and dull after a while.
8. There are no rules, use as many, or as few, fingers as feels comfortable. If 2 is comfortable, that's all good but if you want to nail the 3 finger thing, excellent. Just to say, Steve Harris only uses 2 fingers, Sheehan however does most definitely use 3.
9.
I have serious GAS for one of these. The Sonic Blue screamed 'Buy Me' as soon as I saw it, but everyone else seemed to be going 'gaga' over the Surf Green ones. I also love the Black/Black/Maple. I will pull the trigger on one soon, but which one?
One of each. It's the only solution
10. For the price of 2nd hand MIM Fender Jazz you can get a Sire V7. I always regard Mex Fenders as incredibly expensive for what they are.
11.
I'd be having a word with the geetars I think. If you need an ext cab with a Rumble 500 for volume reasons I'd say everything is too loud.
Can you come have a word with my lot?
12. Get rid of the guy. There'll be plenty of fiddle players around the area if you need a replacement
13. If your drummer couldn't be heard synthaside then your guitarist(s) is simply too loud, insanely loud. The Rumble 500's are fantastic combos and they are loud. However, if your guitarist is drowning out drummers then the combo on its own might be asking a bit much and you may need an ext cab.
14. As someone who came back to playing about 7 years ago, Marshall's problem seemed to be they just didn't seem interested. It wasn't gear I even considered buying when I came back to playing. They were, at that time, producing heavy, unreliable and unappealing amps and cabinets. Others were producing more appealing gear at similar or better prices. They suffer from being regarded as a guitar amp manufacturer and to some extent the bass range being an after thought. Even now there seems to be little effort in getting EDEN 'out there'. It's a great brand with a good reputation and you can barely find it in the UK
15. Dozing Dog near Barnstaple. Nice bloke Geoff. He was an authorised Ampeg service agent, not sure if he still is because Ampeg changed their UK distribution and maintenance set up a couple of years ago. http://www.dozingdog.co.uk/index.html
16. The age range of my current band is 40 to 43, so quite narrow...that's assuming the drummer is 40, I don't really know how old he is but he looks the same age as the rest of us. Either that or he's had a really hard life There is an assumption amongst many that as soon as you're over, sort of, 35 then you can only be in a covers band. Nothing wrong with being in a covers band, I was in a great one 2 years ago, but if you want to dabble your toe in originals then it becomes more difficult.
17. I'd send it back for a refund. Once doubt, about the reliability of a piece of equipment, creeps in it's best to send it back and move on.
18. Carol Kaye, Kim Deal and Tina Weymouth, out of that very short list have definitely had an impact. I don't think Tal Wilkenfield has really been around, or known long enough, to have been able to shape music.
19. Marshall bought EDEN a while back and put all its 'bass' eggs in that basket effectively.
20. From the user guide
The Drive control changes the gain structure and EQ interactively with the GAIN control position. By modifying the circuit structure, Drive gives a “vintage voiced” EQ and gain structure that adapts to how you set the GAIN control. The lower the GAIN control setting, the “flatter” the EQ applied. The higher you set the GAIN control, the more saturated the gain structure becomes, and the more the bass is tightened and the treble smoothed. The Drive circuitry surrounds the midrange controls, enabling you to get a huge variety of tonal characteristics by simply adjusting the GAIN, MID LEVEL and MID FREQ controls. When the Clip light turns red it indicates that the preamp is being driven into clipping. Clipping can be a desirable characteristic, depending on your taste. If you would like a cleaner sound you can experiment with the input pad, Gain, Drive, and Tone Controls. All of these things, including the output level of your bass, affect how often the light will go off. Clipping the Tone Hammer 500 will not cause any shutdowns or damage to your amplifier.
21. Richie Kotzen Patricia Lynn Drew (she of an unknown band The Wind and The Wave) there's something about her voice that's just right for me. And the singer from the last covers band I was in. Loved her voice.
22.
Controversially, I have really got into Jessie J's voice. Some of her material isn't the best but her voice is utterly marvellous with phenomenal control and versatility. Seen her live a couple of times and she doesn't disappoint.
Nothing controversial, Jessie J has a great voice. She's probably overlooked a lot.
23. I think I'll just leave it alone and call any dirt 'mojo' or character
24. Cutting through the chaff, time wasters and idiots is a full time occupation when it comes to musicians...or, rather, those who seek to be in a band. Those who've been recommended aren't anymore reliable or motivated than the people you contact or have contacted you via the Internet. And established bands seem no different to start ups. It's amazed me how some established bands have kept going with such slack attitudes. The best band I've been in recently was a new band where two of the members had never been in a band before. You couldn't have wished for more motivated and professionally minded people. Unfortunately one of them had to leave the area and it was impossible to replace them...because of the high proportion of time waisting, talentless morons that infect music.
