1.
The expression 'Leo got it right' is bandied about quite a lot. I understand the view but being one of the very few people to have spent some time with him I can say that he wouldn't neccessarily claim that. I met him at CLF Research in 1979 when he was producing guitars for Musicman and he was constantly trying to improve and develop his instruments. I would say the Stingray may well have been the first truly active bass to be a world-wide success and of course he went on to design some fine instruments under the G&L banner. I can't imagine that any present day luthier of the more boutique/unique styled basses would denegrate Leo Fender's pioneering work since I guess they would accept they had to design from something that went before. For his part LF only claimed that he was lucky in producing the first production-run bass that 'caught on' i.e. that if any other company had beaten him to it that may well have been how the masses would expect a bass guitar to be. So, dear friends, we should respect the original innovater and at the same time be grateful that further innovations have come along to enable all tastes to be satisfied. The fact that the Precision bass (along with it's derivitives) continues to be probably the most popular in the world to this day as far as numbers are concerned is a credit to the man but were he still alive he would no doubt be trying to improve on it. Viva la difference! (as the Spanish would say, Rodney).
Listen to the Doc. He's got it right. Time to simmer down and let the thread fade away.
2. My USA 62 Reissue Precision is my main squueze. I will never part company with it as it was a leaving gift to me from my last place of work. Apart from that it is a marvellous bass.
3. A wee side note: One of my favourite albums which I never tire of listening to is John Mayall's 'USA Union'. Larry Taylor plays great bass on the album. Harvey Mandel also plays some very tasty guitar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vsvb80hPvUM
4. I just got this rather nice precision from Bassilla (thanks Richard). I am also looking after my son's gear at the moment whilst he is in Australia. As he has a butterscotch blonde Jazz I thought it would be a good idea to take a couple of pics of them together.
5.
This is exactly why I avoid buying Fenders nowadays. Why use a piece of Maple with an irregular grain pattern for a neck in the first place? Surely its asking for potential grief? Now; time to look out the suit of armour before the howling Fender mob descend upon me.
I think you enjoy the provocation.
6. Just bought a very nice precision from Julian. A quick delivery and a pleasant, trouble-free transaction. Many thanks Julian!
7.
There's as much chance of Andy Baxter selling a bass for a fiver as me plucking a Russian meteorite the size of a double decker bus out of the sky and slam dunking it into the Grand Canyon.
8. If only it was £5.
9. Just sold a rather nice fretless Jazz to Richard. A thoroughly nice chap with whom it has been a pleasure to do business.
10. I remember my wife and I dancing to Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen when they had a gig at Scarborough in the 70s. Kenny was a great musician and entertainer. A sad loss.
11. Hey man if you want to put a Fender decal on your bass then do it. It's your bass.
12. A great and passionate player. A sad loss indeed.
13. Thanks everyone but with the hassle trying to get the Ibanez that I wanted I went to home territory and bought another precision.
14. Looks like surf green to me.
15. Thanks yorick. That is the bass indeed. However, I note that it is no longer available on that site and that it is in the USA. It does prove that it exists though. I think I'm now going off the idea of the Ibanez. Too difficult to source.

"SOLD"

Is the bass all original?
17. Thanks Jezz. That looks nearly the same. The 690 has a quilted top which is probably the only difference.
18. The bass is now sold. Thanks to all those who showed interest.
19. Thanks matt. Interesting way Ibanez go about publicising their products.
20. Ok chaps. I've been reading about a neck thru bass in the Ibanez range. It's an SRX690DX. However, they do not seem to be in the current Ibaez catalogue. Are the SRX basses available in this country? I can find bits and pieces about other SRX basses but the 690 seems to be a rare beastie. The reason I'm asking is that I may be interested in acquiring a 690. I've just been onto the USA ebay site and there's none on there either. I'm now getting really curious.
21.
That's the sad part right there. Information at our fingertips these days, and they "cba lookin it up". I weep for the future.
i'm with you there Matt. So sad.
22.
I think that was Pierre Brock on the live clip. Babbitt did the studio version as far as I know.
Yep. Here's Pierre on another vid of the same tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwCHFaarTjY
23. Great vid WoT. They all come home in the end.
24. The dots are still there on the side of the neck from when the bass was fretted. I'm not a Jazz player but to me it sounds glorious and just as a good fretless Jazz should sound.
