The youtube clip is part of a DVD entitled 'Marvin Gaye. The RealThing. In Performance 1964-1981' The DVD is a must for all Motown and Marvin fans and of course those who want to hear a good dose of Jamerson.

I don't know about England and Wales but in Scotland a teacher of any instrument has to have had formal education in music, often a University degree, and achieved necessary qualifications in their particular instrument and in teaching practice. I know this as my younger son is currently trying to get a job as a teacher of guitar.

However, it was certainly not my intention to resurrect anything. My post was really trying to be helpful in saying what I had learnt from the past and trying to be more open-minded. Maybe, I'm just not meant to be a member of this forum. Sorry everyone.

On the old BW forums I got well and truly burnt a couple of times for posting that I had been offended by some stuff. The mods also weighed in and so I accepted that if I was going to participate and gain the benefits of the forum then I had to accept things as they were. I now feel that we just have to accept each other and the way we put things in our posts. If anything got drastically out of hand then obviously a mod would intervene. What I found however is that many people didn't grasp why something would be offensive to an individual. Therefore, it would be too tedious to constantly be wondering what causes offense. So why don't we just see how we all get on and if anything gets too extreme then it will be obvious to all concerned. Just a few rambling thoughts from a former burnee.

If any dings or dents are going to be put on it I want them to be my dings and dents. If a bass already has wear on it then that's accepted. I would never pay for wear to be added artificially. But everyone to their own I suppose.

I know this thread is coming to an end but I thought I might make a case for the MIA 62 reissue as being a possibility. Like a few here I was dissappointed to learn that Bravewood were not making basses anymore. However, as it was known that I was on the lookout for a 60s P I was speechless when I was presented with a 62 MIA reissue when I left my last employment. The bass is absolutely brilliant. Rodders[/quote] I'm not sure about the 3 A levels. My son had Scottish Qualifications so I don't know the eqivalent. There obviously needs to be some academic qualification. Best to check with the Institute. Also, my son had to audition for entry to the diploma. As he passed his diploma he then got entry to the degree course. He has never sat grade exams.

Allow me to rant a wee bit. I've just come back from a gig my younger son's band were playing at. First thing that greeted them on turning up on time to sound check was "how many tickets have you sold" and, "the main band is going to be three hours late so you'll have to wait to sound check". They had busted a gut to get there on time and so weren't too chuffed. Why they couldn't sound check first no-one knows. Anyway, eventually the main band arrive and take forever to sound check. The crowd is getting restless as the doors which were meant to have opened at 7.30 don't open until 8.45pm. My son's band go on without a sound check at all. Needless to say the sound is terrible. It's not helped by the fact that three band members are at the front of the stage whilst the rhythm section are tucked away at the back behind the other band's gear. They did voice their complaints and were answered by a snivelling wee promoter that they had an attitude - TOO BLOODY RIGHT THEY HAVE AN ATTITUDE. Now, I know it doesn't always go plain sailing and more often than not there are hiccups. But this was just downright amateur. Something needs to be done to give bands a fair crack of the whip. Is it time for a performers association to try and get a better deal for bands? Should we blacklist venues like the one I've just been to? Oh, I should also say that this was a 'proper' music venue. Not a pub or local hall despite my sarcastic title to the thread. The late band were also touring Europe. Sorry for the long rant but it has helped to get of my chest. I have watched my son's band work hard and spend a lot of money in order that they can put on a professional show only to be let down by amateur promoters and sound guys. Oh and it goes without saying, they didn't get paid a dime. Thankyou fellow forumites for allowing the rant!

My son is currently doing a B.Mus degree at the Institute. He was advised to do a years diploma course first of all and then to move on to the degree. The course has been absolutely superb with his playing and musical knowledge increasing to a high level. As I write he is recording with his band The Parish Music Box (see their MySpace site). The cost of the course and the cost of living in London should be taken into consideration as my son couldn't have done this without support from home. If I can be of any more assistance let me know. I agree. It's getting really difficult to find a semi-decent range of basses in local music stores nowadays. There's maybe one or two US Jazzes and precisions with some warwick's thrown for good measure. The rest is usually low end stuff. I've just scored a Jazz Deluxe FMT from ebay. Never seen one before. Hope it's going to be ok.
