Job sharing for a covers band - any advice?
Sibob replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
You say the gig you’ve picked up is a dep gig.....so why not just say you’re unavailable for half th gigs they offer you? Then it's down yo them to find someone else. To be honest, whether you retain the dep slot is another question, you’re just a dep, if someone else can do them all, they might get number one dep slot. Si -
Possibly, but what if you don’t want to play open notes? They invariably sound different to fretted notes, as well as notes higher on the neck sounding warmer and rounder (E on the 12th fret (octave) compared to 7th on A and 2nd on D). You also talk about energy, well frets are closer together higher up the neck, so if your lateral movement is as smooth as it should be, that’s probably as equally energy conserving as playing everything in 1st position?! Dunno I think the lesson is to learn it ALL ways, then you have a choice. Positioning should always be a choice. Si

Would be helpful to know what you like about the Wal and (and be brutal here, no rose-tinted specs) what you don’t like. Si

Pros, Semi-Pros, Hobbyists / Weekend warriors etc.

I’d profer that being a professional musician and having a professional attitude are VERY different things Si -
Pros, Semi-Pros, Hobbyists / Weekend warriors etc.
Sibob replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I would suggest that: Pro Musician: Earns 100% of their income from musical eneavours Semi Pro: Earns a percentage of their income from musical endeavours, topped up by income from non-musical endeavours. For the sake of crossover with Hobbyist, probably more income than they spend on gear. Hobbyist/Weekend Warrior: Earns a little bit of money, but not enough to add to income after gear purchases. Bedroom Bassist: Not in a band, just plays at home. Although plenty of Pro Musicians as a result of being a bedroom musician now thanks to Youtube All in all, there's so many crossovers and exceptions. Si -
The FX25b sounds great, but because of the volume dip when engaged (there’s no Vol Control), makes it pretty useless live. If the SBW isn’t doing it for you, do yourself a favor and just get an MXR Bass Envelope Filter. Job done. Si

Ah ok sorry, my bad! Very interesting, I have a 33” headless build nearing completion, so worth knowing! Si

But that's a bass bag right? The OP is asking about the Guitar version, which is a fair bit shorter overall than 8cm Si

Ableton is fine for programming drums, however it's arguably not the best DAW for 'band/instrument' recording, it's way more geared towards electronic music (which it's amazing at). As such you may want to look at Garageband, or Logic (running in it's simplified mode......allows you to get more advanced when you're ready), as mentioned above, they both have very useable drum sequencers. Fun fact, although Logic's drum tracks appear as an audio wave at first, you can simply drag the part onto a spare soft-instrument track and it will show you the midi score......you could then apply any drum sounds soft-instrument (DFH, Tooktrak etc) on that track. Allows you to pull together drum grooves very easily, then apply your own preferred sounds to that groove. Si

I have a Fusion (and another on the way with my ACG build), and whilst they're excellent bags, I prefer the balance of my Mono bag, specifically when carrying on one shoulder. The Fusion almost feels a little top-heavy weirdly (nothing in the top pocket). The Fusion is slightly slimmer front to back and feels quite compact, so that may also be a consideration too. Either way I don't think you can lose, both excellent. As for the 'fitting in a guitar bag', I'm not sure, probably depends on the scale-length of the bass? A 35" or 36" scale bass, even when headless, probably needs a bass bag. A headless 32" or less might fit in a guitar bag?! Try measuring the full length of the bass and emailing Mono directly perhaps. Looks like the overall length of the Guitar case is 105.4 cm/41" (external), so you should be able to make an educated guess. Si

La Bella Flats & Gold White Nylons comparison with Chromes and Rounds

Ah yes, just checked on the La Bella website and they echo this, or rather they only talk about Flats being an issue, they make Through-Body Flats for that reason. Si -
La Bella Flats & Gold White Nylons comparison with Chromes and Rounds

My understanding is that all flat/nylon wounds need to be too-loaded, unless soecifically designed otherwise. Otherwise the wrapping is likely to damage due to the bridge break-angle, and the string unravel?! Si -

I’m liking them so much that i’m re-recording a song on the upcoming JoCee EP just to get them on. Much nicer than the rounds I had on the tune before! Si -

La Bella Flats & Gold White Nylons comparison with Chromes and Rounds
Sibob replied to Sibob's topic in Accessories and Misc
The Gold White Nylons are very bright for a tapewound (obviously still a little less-so than a round wound), so if I had them on a passive bass, I would tend to agree with you, I'd probably want the White Copper Nylons too. However because I have them on an active bass, I tend to just roll back the Treble anyway, so I'm happy at the moment! You know what? There's really not a lot in it, I haven't had to do anything with the setup of my Precision, it's all sat the same. That said, the gauges are slightly different, I had 45-100 Chromes, whereas the La Bella's are 43-104, so could be to do with that! Am enjoying them a lot so far. The reason for the change is that I put La Bella Gold Flats (not to be confused with the Gold White Nylons) on my Lakland 44-94, which gave me that bright Flats sound, so wanted something more mellow and 'classically' thumpy on my Precision. I really really like Chromes for that brighter flats sound, but with the above setup, means I can get all my strings from the same manufacturer, which is just a lot easier in my head, a single order and all that. That said, the plan with having most basses with Flats or Nylons is that I have to change strings every 5 years at the very most haha. Si -
So it looks like the three basses from LBGS show wound up at Bass Direct and Pauls Bass Mattes (Netherlands, brilliant shop and Paul Sipps is a lovely man): Sacramento & Midwestern: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Serek.html Midwestern 2: https://www.bassmatters.nl/en/1696/Serek-Midwestern-2 Si

Hey all, So here's my quick and simple comparison of La Bella flats with Chromes on my Precision, and Lakland Rounds with Gold White Nylon Tapewounds on my 55-01: https://soundcloud.com/simonpoulton/sets/la-bella-vs-daddario-lakland Each track has a description of what is happening, test environment etc My conclusions are that La Bella's are quieter, across their ranges, than strings I've previously used (my Gold Flats on my other Lakland are also quieter than the rounds they replaced too, but just means my amp does a little more work, easy enough, doesn't bother me). New La Bella flats, sound like 3 year old Chromes, so more mellow out of the pack. Gold White Nylons do an excellent impression of broken in rounds, whilst feeling very smooth and lasting a hell of a lot longer hopefully (due to being tapes). All in all, am very happy with these early tests, think I've finally found a company that has a varied and interesting string roster, where I can get everything I need from one place! Cheers Si

Disappointing customer service at bass dealer
Sibob replied to disgrace of bass's topic in General Discussion
It’s funny how the expectation of good customer service completely switches us off to others on a human level. So whilst it’s entirely possible that this young chap isn’t a very good salesman, it’s also very possible that he’s having an awful day/week/year. So instead of checking what the case is, we complain on social media as opposed to seeing if we can offer help/guidance/advice on how that person might either fix their problem, or at the least, get better at their job. ”Oh that’s the job of the shop manager/owner” you cry! Nope, it’s the job of anyone who cares. Si
