  1. Not sure what people define as 'great bass tone', but what is important is having a tone that glues the rest of the band together, that fills the necessary sonic space and stays out of the way of other instruments.....that tone could be literally anything (depending on the musical context) and still be 'great'. So yes a 'complimentary' tone is incredibly important. Si
  2. Lakland would do that on a custom build if you sourced the pickups I believe. You'd essentially then have a US built 44-01 (ie two soap bars) Si
  3. It's the US 55-Dual J: https://www.lakland.com/55-JJ.htm But in a Metallic Blue as opposed to just the sunburst they mention on the site. They do have a habit of doing little runs of other colours sometimes. Cheers Si
  4. Ah sorry, missed that important detail lol. Yeah, 4 preamps for under £100 does just leave you with Behringer, unless you find something better used of course. Si
  5. Do you want to record those three instruments simultaneously, or one at a time? Si
  6. But still, £140 from Bass Direct huh Si
  7. All flats are technically 'tapewound', but with metal tape rather than nylon. As such, flats tend to refer to metal tapes and nylon (be it black, white etc) to nylon tapes. Si
  8. I certainly didn't mean to suggest this isn't a great deal, a new one would probably set you back about £2800 inc shipping & import duty/VAT. Hopefully it will come to the UK and then I'll get first dibs when it gets sold again lol Si
  9. Beauty, welcome to the BassChat 'passive 44-94' club......it's just you and me basically lol. Si
  10. Worth noting that a lot of Tapes can't be strung through-body.....so if you have a US Jazz (or similar) that allows for that, string it through the bridge instead. But as mentioned, much lower tension than Flats and Rounds. I've become very interested in trying the LaBella Gold White Nylons on my 5 String Lakland, they seem very cool. Si
  11. Oh man, don't do this to me......been thinking about these and one comes up for sale? Really? If it was in the UK, I'd be in trouble lol Probably worth noting that these are only rare because not many people ask for them......Lakland would make you one tomorrow if you asked Si
  12. Tension has little to do with the gauge, it's the size of the core. Talk to Newtone Strings, they'll be able to sort a string that tunes to what you need it to, without flapping around, and not necessarily huge guages. When I had need for it, I was running Drop C Standard (C, F, Bb, Eb) in guages 45-105 with a tension similar to standard tuning. Obviously you can't tune this strings upto standard, they'd break, but worth setting a bass up for them if it's all you use. Si
  13. { thread derail } You may enjoy this read: https://d2zjg0qo565n2.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/focusrite/downloads/21300/rednet-casestudy-usher-elec_1.pdf { /thread derail } Si
  14. Most (all) DAWs will only be able to load one audio driver at a time, with the audio driver only recognising one 'interface' at a time. In some cases (on Macs), it's possible to create an aggregate device, to combine inputs/outputs from multiple connected devices, but it's ropey at best. Ideally, to save yourself space and hassle, just buy yourself a dedicated audio interface that has the amount of i/o you require.....you'll thank yourself later! Si (For transparency I work for Focusrite, not trying to sell you anything, just make your life easier )
  15. I've always been keen to try a Baron: http://www.schecterguitars.com/bass/baron-h-vintage-detail But never seen one in order to try, should have gone along to them at NAMM, but totally forgot. Si
  16. LaBella Gold Flats fitted to my Lakland 44-94......sounds great on some recordings so far! Can't wait to gig it. Here's to not changing strings ever again?! lol

Have you found them slightly quieter than regular nickels or flats? I loved the tone of them on my P but then output was def lower!

@davebass66Hmmm, can't say I've noticed a volume dip compared to the Chromes on my '71 Precision, but difficult to know what other differences are coming from the pickups etc (my 44-94 is a custom passive P/J). Not noticed anything significant going from the factory rounds it had on it to the Golds, but not to say there might have been some very minor differences, nothing my amp can't handle lol.

I was about to ask if you noticed a volume drop. I had a huge volume drop on my Precision. I was previously using Chromes and Rounds.

  17. Whilst swapping the pre is the biggest thing, I did find swapping the pickups for some decent dual coils improved the passive sound a lot (for obvious reasons). I went through Elrick Basses, who stocks USA dual coil Bart in MK-1 sized housing, always handy: http://www.elrick.com/product-category/elrick-accessories/pickups-electronics/ That said, depends if that's above your budget as well. Worth considering that if your bass had pickups/preamp that indeed you loved the sound of, would the cost actually be higher. ie don't think about it as spending the same again on 'just' pickups, think about it as you spending the money on a bass you need to in order to get a sound pleasing to you. Si
  18. I have a Bass Collection Jive fretless which is very good for the money! Si
  19. Do they work? But seriously, nice pair. I’d have the P over the J if it were me though. Si
  20. It’s worth noting that soapbars simply refers to the casing, not what is inside. Generally speaking, you can find any pickup config in soapbar format, single cool, dual coul, humbucker etc etc. So actually, your setup is much more versatile with what you can test than anything else. I wager that there’s plenty of mid-priced or 2nd hand eBay alternatives to the big names too. You might even find that some pickup companies might fit whatever format you want in the cases you already have. Si
  21. That sounds really very good!! Si
  22. Oooosh, love the look of this!! Second dibs when you sell it Si
  23. This!
  24. I think they look great, especially now they do custom finishes!! Si
  25. LaBella Gold Flats on the way for my Lakland 44-94.....which also happens to be gold
I think I may be done with roundwounds?! o.O

@discreetIt’s only an 80’s bass if it’s headless and white with black hardware!

Yeah, that's the other sort of 80s bass... that I don't like. :)
