1. If the drummer starts at the right tempo... and this is easy to set...and speeds up, then that is a drum fail, in my book. Gtrs cannot not set tempo... and if he is, gtr fail. Bass can try and dsrag everytime along but this is tiresome. If singers are causing issues, then this doesn't sound like a band to me. I'd canvass everyone as to where they think the problem is and then get everyone to address it but there is a world of difference between not playing in time and can't... the former is fixible..maybe.. the latter is a deal breaker, imo.
2.
Hence an 8x10 which is surely more about appearance than necessity for 99.9999% of the bass playing population.
Depends where they play..? in a pub, yes. Not seen one in a pub ...since god knows when but there is a reason why the dominate stage gigs.
3.
Another good example of the chucking technique
the groove is sacrificed for the fluff in that example... IMO
4.
It was just an example of what musicians can do with some talent, experience and application within a limited timespan. Drumming is slightly different but I've had a pro drummer stand in for a gig. I sent him a list in the morning and in the evening he played a three hour set. Bass wise, I've played pit from sight reading and gigs from charts while the guitarist gave me cues. It's not impossible to play a gig with only a few hours notice.
I was being sarcastic... no comparison between a bar set and a main tour. Not unknown to to do whole set in a bar as a jam... if you have the players, the pub wont know, tbh. It is just a case of following the lead.
5.
Most of the promoters we deal with do a great job, have obviously read our T&Cs - there's often a problem with the tech rider but that might be local availability issues...but this current dude - never played in portugal before so new promoter.....he hasn't a clue what he's doing, it seems.
Recommendations are everything... Does he have a CV of acts he has booked?
6.
and promoters I'd just like to point out that putting us on is never going to make you, me or anyone else rich..... and Mr Promoter, you think you're not making enough? - put yourself in my shoes, buddy, you cheapskate - we have to put up with shitforbrains like you!
Not really selling the act to a promoter here..??
7. Tributes bands are big business... and easy money.
8.
And the solution? The ex bassist (pre me) is using our bands name and adding the word roadshow on the end (and playing a completely different style of music)
hmmmm tacky.... !! Doesn't sound like he has tried too hard to distance his new 'act' his old one.. I hope he didn't have any website admin either....
9. I run 2 with an 800w amp. Of course you have to be sensible but my bass on the dial is about 10.... and I run clean so I can hear them working or over working. The secret to these cabs is that they have such a nice mid ...not harsh at all. The go as low as they need to IMO.
10. Wouldn't worry about it .... I'd want to hear them together whereas you know 2 of the same will be a greater sum than the parts. Personally, I think 2x210's is THE small rig but other factors come into it when you start accepting compromises. My big rig is a 212 and 210 load balanced and it sounds great. I've had 210 and 115 before...and that worked, but cabs should also be a step on anyway...especially from someone like Bergantino so if he designs them to pair... then they'll pair. The only thing I'd be wary of is a single 12 bottoming out if you load if for a 210 but 300w against 350/400 shouldn't be an issue.
11.
Maybe, for Gary it was probably easy. However I'm sure their set list was a little different than 4 hours worth of bar band material at least 60 different songs. Blue
yep...I know which would easier to wing... and it wouldn't be a bar set
12. Entirely understandable Gaf.. I think you just take the break that you seem to be screaming out for. You are not jaded, you sound burnt out And IF you get the desire again, you may want to rethink the quality of work you do or seek. I'm in a good region with loads of work but I recognise also the people I wont work with. If that comes over as 'snotty or up myself' I can't really worry about that perception. I've set a standard that I want to hit or go above... and I'll take my chances doing that but I wont deal with the, IMO, crap. So, no crappy venues/pubs for rubbish money...no small venues playing to 10 men and dog..etc etc And I do this to maintain my passion/enthusiam/desire and have no wish to kill it again. I am now back, far better than before.....BUT all the dep work I gave up I haven't yet got back. I'm not worried so much about that as that is what killed me in the first place, but the vanity/ego aspect was cool. I like being the guy or one of the guys who people called ...but that was because I was available. When I became unavailable, things move on..and other people take your place etc etc . But there is no way I could go back to how jaded I was.. I realised I was only coasting- if that.. and that is not how I work so it was something that had to be done. I suspect most people will get the drive back..as that is what propelled them so far in the first place but you have to stop..IMO..to try and rediscover it. Let it happen... no way round it, IME. You can't force passion/desire IMO
13. Get the TH500 to make sure. I couldn't get away with a single..but you might be able to. The beauty of those cabs..apart from being very nice sounding cabs is that they are light. If you want lighter still..and IMO, a better cab suited to the TH..get TKS S112's as they are 10kgs each...!!!
14. I always did this with fingers but some might do this with the thumb. Double thumb would be cool ( even easier..?)... but really it is the endurance so I'd mention that at the time... if it is an issue...that you'll get that element sorted later... Any rear pickup sound would be my thinking but on the track..I can't recall that as being a requirement. Another reason why Chic back catalogue is required study
15. Easy to get jaded and I don't think you should try and force it. You are either inspired or you aren't... I took 2 years out as I wasn't enjoying it all.. I came back stronger and more passionate than before but I avoid gigs/situations which test my patience so out go crap gigs and waste of time musos or units in order to enable me to want to keep on doing it. I'm not sure you can play thru this...especially if you don't 'have' to
16.
I have never been influenced to purchase any bass because somebody else uses one. I really don't understand that mentality. Who is influenced to buy a bass because so and so uses one?
Too many.,.. and amps and cabs, IMO.
17. I'd say you liking the bass trumps the signature on it. I'd kind of shy away from the association and implication a lot of the time tho tbh...
18.
If those three guys are getting asked back often enough to be able to charge full price and they are paying tax on their income plus running a van, pat testing, insurance etc etc rather than cash in hand and it is their main source of income with books to prove they are professional musicians wether you like it or not.
It may be debatable whether they do any of those things but they do chase the money and I'm aware of them blowing out agents and booking direct, but hey... there you go. My main point is that they charge what they charge and try to justify it but claiming it is their 'living' I don't think they are very good at all - but again, who cares about that, but rebookings are their problem as you don't see them around too often so the pubs are only 'conned' once. They have tried to get around this by running 3-4 bands off the same line-up..but again they don't seem to hang around too long. So no, doesn't sound very professional at all to me... and I know or a few 'proper' agents who have pursued them for commission and then blacklisted them...although this mighty mean the agents have just mentioned it to other agents.
19. TH for me... but if if you want a bit more grindey then the PF500 works well with those cabs, IMO. ( included because it is light enough as opposed to adhering strictly to the criteria.).. but also, for me, I wouldn't put it in front of TH500 anyway Having said that, those cabs seem to work with many amps.
20. If you can get a mortgage on your books as a musician, that must count.. But by the same token, there is pro and Pro.. and the 3 piece that charge top dollar in pubs because that is their 'living' doesn't really cut it, YMMV
21. You need to be easy to work with..so your playing needs to be there, and so does your ability to organise and adhere to diary issues, plus you should not cause any issues once on the job. You want call backs. If you are deficient in any of then above, your playing needs to be up, up and up a few notches so they will put up with you because you are so bloody talented...
22. Always hated thyat pre amp so understand why they had the preset. Potentially a lot of tone shaping there... I just didn't like the metallic sound bias it had so glad semi para's put it to bed. I'd guess you have 10+- db on your designated freqs and that is hard to control on such a small graphic panel ( same as the Ampeg) so you must realise that a small change is going to supposedly be quite a sweep.. Good luck. I'd just use the pre shape... most sounds are scooped at some point or another anyway. Can you start with the rep shape and switch the Eq in.. or is it one or the other..?
23. It can only sell if someone buys it...assume no one did. Mine was in stock for way too long and turned out to be a great bass. Got it from a musical backwater tho
24. For reference, I use mine horizontal so a 19" would fit anyway. Single chassis aren't a dispersion issue either (never is, IME) so coupled with the fact that I hear mine perfectly stacked in pairs ...which we know is only 65cms or so, combined...so if these come out close to the 'competition' you'll not have trouble hearing them anyway.
25. I have very low action on 2 basses and the 3rd is a work in progress. At the moment the tone of the bass makes me persevere... It isn't a slap machine .. but I'm thinking of making it my groove bass... So..atm, not freaked out about the set-up.. but also not gigging it... hmmm.. ??
