1.
Epifani cabs have a lot of low end, at least the 410 did. I improved my sound by moving up to Bergantino cabs. Have a look at the CN210 and CN212 cabs. ..............
I'd also offer that their typical sound is known for being 'pillowey'... and I'd agree if talking about their 12's.. I can see their 410 following that 'ethic' as well.
 2.
They turn down a little, you turn up a little; job done (depending on repertoire...).
Yep.. a good place to start but when gtrs start talking about a mix... well, I'd say at least 80% of the ones I know ..well, lets not go there..
 3. Thought we were talking about our own bands... as I think it is all about picking the right guys.
 4. I think if you know the song you can busk it easily but you are going to have to fashion a method that works for you.. Do it and then you'll see how far short..or not you are. You'll never know otherwise.
 5. 212 + 210 for me and the 2x112. All ceramic which I'm liking but the 112's are 10kg each so I've covered all bases.
 6.
He might be a good player, but he doesn't sound like a good band member.
He wont recognise where he needs to up his game in some respects...which is always a bad sign.. No wonder he is wearing the patience a bit thin
 7. Don't pay well... but then that is the Scots in there..??
 8.
I need extra monitors, what's that all about?! Wouldn't get many gigs round my end doing that, probably zero.
The request was by an act and the venue had to contractually supply them. I'm not talking about pubs though.. I've hardly mentioned pubs here at all and not in the context of turning down your backline. Still it suits some people or they can't comphrehend that, they can fill their boots.
 9. It is an in house spec and the desk is hired in as well. If a touring band booked there asks for additional monitors and more than the house has, and a special type of desk, they have to hire-in. When I was touting for a P.A, it was suggested I buy in a certain level of monitors to compliment the stock by the engr who invarible does the house sound. DB, Martin, Meyer were mentioned amongst others. I never bought them back then but it is quite common to hire in extra kit here so it makes sense. I'm not interested in Hire so much but for theatre jobs and a couple of friendly venues it makes sense. Same as a bass rig which I've hired out as well.
 10.
I suppose the gigs you turn down due to a brand of pa you dislike or the fee is not enough you might call "the ones that got away"?
Yep... but I'd probably be glad about it as well...tbh. If I quote a price and someone comes back way off that price... then you walk away, surely. There will always be someone cheaper anyway... so to me, it is the same thing. As for gear at an event, I'd bill for that. There is minimum spec and I get the point about gear that has had a hard life, but this is all about having dealings with people who are on the same page, IMO...and what is required/desired on the gig As it happens, I'm looking for some high quality monitors..and by that I mean better than QSC.. so Martin, Turbosound or DB etc and I'll use them for vox out front or stage monitors I'll either hire them to the band or I'll sub them to a P.A company as there are never enough quality monitors to go around,I've found, and the local venue can't afford to have more than 6 of them. I'd sub to them when a touring act comes through because their riders always specify DB model or Equivalent..
 11. It tends to be the more informal places that will doa jug... or maybe charities, but otherwise even pubs round here don't tend to 'like' it. Of course, and out of town band might try and do a jug to get a few more coppers but pubs put the band on the price of beer anyway, so it probably would go down to well either.. Not a regular thing or on a regular basis...and besides, who wants to be stiffed with going round with the 'begging' bowl. You'd just about .... get away with it..?? if you had a guest or guests who significantly added to the gig and weren't getting paid..? maybe.
 12. And in all honesty, whilst I am a big fan and love TKS... for a very loud/full gig on a stage, I'd take another rig (212 + 210) and not 2x112. As with all these things you have to reasonable what you want them to do.
 13. It is the same if the customer bulks at the fee and at some point you have to walk away. You will lose a few gigs but the judgement call is that it are not worth doing them. I'm quite capable of messing up a gig..I don't need someone else doing it for me and getting the blame.. and I don't need to lose players I've cultivated by suddenly not being 'available'.. These guys will do a pub or two..but mainly that is not the gig they are after so I don't feed them problem gigs... I'd only get away with that once or twice. In most of my posts, this theme is pretty constant as in do it properly or not at all.
 14.
Yes, they will....but they don't go really low in their response - plenty of impact but not a real sub thump. I actually prefer the lighter response, as it doesn't mess up the front of house so much. I've had a pair for a few months and only used two cabs for one gig. Within one song the front of house engineer was asking for a little less stage volume (Blues rock, with an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500, set to approx 25% on the master volume). They are very good - voiced, but very musical and not extreme in any way.
I'd agree with this. I run them with my 5's and no problem getting pretty loud. They will fill but not flood the sound.
 15.
"You don't think the gear is suitable? No worries, we can just get another band."
That would be fine.
 16.
And what do you do about it if said monitors are confirmed as pants?
Take a rig for the stage and make alternative provisions, That is the wonder of telephone calls ahead If the P.A was booked by someone else, then I'd mention it wasn't very good... If I didn't mention it, the vocalist would, more than likely, so it isn't something that wouldn't be commented on. And certain guys wouldn't work that way again so I'd probably lose them off the gig So, it is just easier doing things properly in the first place.
 17.
This venue is working, but problems with the big PubCo's (Punch Taverns, Enterprise Inns etc.) are well documented - it seems these companies were only ever in it for the value of the buildings as assets, and this landlord was very open to me about this. Also, the jug pubs do seem to be the ones that have great audiences, so, if like me, you love playing to an enthusiastic audience rather than going home with your pockets stuffed full of fivers, locally, these pubs are well worth playing.
Maybe there is a precedent set locally. Jugs have never been big round here...apart from Jazzers, which is where I first came across them. The scene here is vibrant enough to pay a standard fee..which is why the pub that tried the % deal didn't last 5 minutes..everyone pulled out of the gigs. A rough calcuation of 15% of £1000 is your £150..and depending on the pub, £1000 takings might be a very good night for them. So you are going to have to milk the jug a bit to even end up with £250...?? Too many pubs here pay that as standard. I'm all for variations of the theme, but fees are too low as it is...IMO... so nobody is voting for a pay cut. To get £350 off takings...which would be a variable anyway... you'd have to take £2500 over the bar..?? The better musicians want £70-80 a man for a min 4 piece. No one is going to offer a variable fee when they can get a set fee elsewhere so easily... not round here and not with Shepherd Neame pumping so much money into music pubs. I'd say over 80% of music round here in pubs is in Shepherd Neame pubs..?? So, no, I don't want to see the jug turn up..... too many people moan at an extra few pence on a pint.. So although people harp on about supporting music...they forget that when asked to put their hand in their pocket...
 18.
I concur . Most venues I've played with PA supplied have had sh*t monitors for bass or just didn't put bass through, so my back line had to be loud enough to cut through
Yes, it is something you learn pretty early on. That is also why you ask. IMO.
 19. Looks a great option...
 20.
Yeah, it's the replacement for the 'Deluxe' range. Old Deluxe is discontinued. Colours are limited to the basics.
Yep... a lazy half arsed marketing attempt, IMO..
 21. I'm not surprised really... I think the cabs I've tried show TKS know what balance they are trying to achieve and you can hear your bass.. I've been working on my basses to get the sound I'm after and I haven't touched the amp.. and I'm getting there.
 22. As a B I wouldn't say that is bad...but it suffers by comparison. IMO.
 23. Where will they position themselves in the range? The problem with Fender tends to be that such a lot of people do the same thing better... so you are left paying for the Fender name....or selling the Fender name
 24. Typically a jazz thing where the 'house/regular' band are on the fee and the guests share the jug. I seem to recall a jug being worth about £7-8 per man..including the house band so that would be about £50 or so in it. I can't see 15% of bar take working round here...as a couple have tried it and that killed the bands willing to play there stone dead. I can actually sympathise with the pub that tried it.... as I've never seen them have that many people in... but that to me just says the venue isn't working... everyone should just give it up.
 25.
Again, sound guys will want pre eq. With di before amp, they know exactly what they are getting - as opposed to a bass player sending "their tone" with a shed load of bass which is just going to be mud through foh.
That is only if they feel the guy doesn't know what he is sending... so the default is to go pre. No reason not to go post if the signal is decent and the bass player knows what is going on. Take it as a compliment if they go for your signal.
