Has 24 Hour Drinking Affected the Live Music Scene?
JTUK replied to D.I. Joe's topic in General Discussion
I am not in a band so I now can only post as a punter. I used to go to the local & out to other venues to actively watch bands, I was happy to meet up with friends & would sometimes drop a text to a mate asking where they were & give them a heads up about a band I maybe watching when they were playing.....I was always out doing this every weekend. Then things changed in a short space of time, the live scene seemed to slow down then the beer got expensive, the smoking ban moved all the people I know outside so I now never see live bands. Nowadays my idea of a night is to stay in for a few cans, nip down to the local bar that will often have bands on, watch what they are like for the end of their set & then go home to carry on drinking. It's not that I want to stay home but I have to cut my cloth to my pocket. I do like a drink but really my mortagage comes first. Whats more pretty much everyone else i know does the same. The bar staff say that the pub has a busy hour between 10pm to 11pm nowadays so i know I'm not the only one. It really is a shame as I love watching live bands but I simply cannot afford the beer prices. Seems like an odd thing to add but I'm hoping for the live music scene may get better with the advent of the e-cigarette
See..this is why I would make drink more expensive outside of pubs and venues. People don't go out anymore as it is cheaper to drink at home. This hurts the pub trade and in turn the economy. Cheap booze from supermarkets make this possible. It is also the reason why dumping Duty free was a bad idea. That little ruse subsidised so many trades...pub, cross channel, brewery etc etc ..and had a positive knock-on. I think it is a fair trade for cheap booze, longer licensing and the social costs that come thereafter. Pub band costs have stayed pretty mucgh the same for the vast majority of gigs for the last 15 or so years, IME.. The reason is supply and demand, IMV. Any pub can easily put on music for small numbers and they do this to turn over beer. The scene gets stale as too many bands flood an area. I know bands that play all month in the same town and never venture further afield... I am a great believer in doing things properly in this regard..so that means a venue needs to have costed up the electrical install for the LIcense, have a good rosta of the better bands..and by better, I mean best draws, and therefore get people in to watch. I find there are enough people who will go out and watch bands, but they are spread too thin in some towns as there can be 8-9 venues doing music that night. Too many bands and too few working venues forces rates down.. No wonder bands don't target pubs as their main gig... not enough money for the work. -
Crazy, crazy crazy. I've done somethings like this in the dim and distant past and there is no way I would put up with it now. I just couldn't be that desperate to play to put up with half the horrrs here... and I don't think I ever did. There is gear share ( which the bands might sort out themselves as it suits them) and very quick turnrounds but the rest of it all makes no sense whatsoever, to me. Even for charity gigs.....where you will have bands on stage all day, they will pay expenses. I think bands have to take some responsibilty for the conditions they work in...

I would be most worried about the neck, more than anything... And, I generally don't like lashes like this... get a dedicated bass..not chop around a 'decent' '78..if only because of the percieved value of said vintage...??

Well, there is Ampeg and Ampeg, IMO. The valve amps are the full beans tho,

Twas good. A warm up set for a few special dates later on in the year..and hope we didn't give too much way even though we didn't have the bigger line-up on show. The arrangements were getting there and we had a good crowd. The year is getting started in earnest ....and we picked up a few more parties. Horns rehearsal this week so once the charts are scored that is those songs set in stone....but the groove is getting there. All good..pretty pleased.

Live..always live for me..but you just need to agree on what reference track you use.

P.A. What does your band use? And is it any good?
JTUK replied to Jesso's topic in General Discussion
That maybe true (but then that isn't a band that should be doing these things anyway, IMO..,) but as an event to remember which is what the day is supposed to be....?? But it is upto them if they want to go down that path and pay cheap rates... no problem with that after we have quoted the price.. -

Decent enough money...so it will be worth spending. I would check out QSC..as it is li8ght and decent. A 4k rig will use 10 or 12" active tops, plus 2 subs. The 10" are supposed to compliment the subs very well... but aren't much use apart from a VOX P.A without them. The subs are big but they support the P.A well. You may have to decide on either K or KW cabs..the latter are wood and IMO, far better. Subs help out in and negate the wooden cab decision to a degree. I think the 4k QSC rig will do a decent marquee but begin the run out of steam at some point. For example... for most pubs the QSC is EASILY enough and good enough, but in a big marquee that can hold 1000 people, it has no chance, IMO. I guess I am saying be careful believing in their watts. 4k should be enough, but............................???? If you can get £1400 for a wedding, deci8de if you can afford to hire in at £300 per day..and let everyone else do the work..and you can turn up with small monitor backline and split £1100 for a FAR easier ride. It might seem that hire-in is wasted money, but, IME...it mostly really isn't if you do it properly. The P.A loads in early and packs down late..you get the easy part... -
Not at all. Entering the Cms and Mms specs often results in error messages. Entering only the specs I noted will never cause a problem. They're also the specs most likely to be accurate on the data sheets. BTW, OP, be sure to compare driver data sheet SPL charts. Bergs use Eminence, which have a characteristic rising sensitivity in the midrange. Beyma does not have that. If crossed over at 1.5kHz or lower to a midrange it's of no consequence, but if not it's major.
Pertinent..as the OP has stated they aren't keen on higher extention/horns. I agree that the help/direction here seems very useful... so it will be interesting to hear how it all turns out.

3kw and about £4k .... and then you can go light on the backline... You will work very hard to get cheap AND good. IMO. Also, not sure what you mean by get started..?? Started as in doing weddings..?? That market can be pretty keen so you need to be able to deliver. People don't mind paying £800-1000 for a photographer but struggle to see that value in a band..?? and if you can get £800 for a wedding..which is cheap music for what it is.... then you are going to have to look, play and sound good. A 300w PV P.A is not the starting point, and nor is shot SH stuff... IMHO.. -
Has 24 Hour Drinking Affected the Live Music Scene?
JTUK replied to D.I. Joe's topic in General Discussion
Not sure I'd want to play to a load of people just after a late drink, but the music scene is struggling because people are struggling, IMO. I don't think more venues chasing the dwindling music audiences helps either.... so cheap music licenses only gets you cheap music, IMO and therefore I am not a fan. Late drinking and cheap booze only leads to one thing as far as I can see.... -
Had a girl come up on stage and said she was hypnotised by our keyb players fast fingers...??? what to say about that..!!! Our gtr has probably 3 PRS gtrs and I asked him what was it about them and he said it does every sound style he wants and he is a strat guy. Since he always sounds good, that is fair enough. The best amp on a gig recently was a 'vintage' AC30..but it lasted 6 weeks before breaking down. I don't think a bad player will get a sound out of any gear anyway. If it sounds good, it is allowed, IMO. I can't recall the last better than average bass sound I heard, tho...
-
I don't play any songs... I just play a little trick or something that falls to hand easily...
-
Looooooooooooooooonnnnnnnng .. It took ages to feel really at ease and dart about instinctively... as I am always changing things up. I grabbed a 4 string the other day to demo something and I hated it... Can't be bothered with that so no going back. It would be undoing 20yrs or so...
-
Nowhere near Portsmouth but a pint is cool. When do u think you're this way again?
-
If the cab is the beans...and I would suspect it pretty much is....then you need an amp to do it justice. The DB amp would be such an amp. I would also say it is in another league entirely...IME....

Really don't understand gigs like these. If you have to deal with issues like is my gear safe, why the hell would you do them..?? Both my rigs are a very decent spec, wth would I want to use anyone elses..and why would let anyone I don't know and trust share mine. And why would I play on bills where this is all the norm...??????????

OD=Tonehammer and distortion=Big Muff
-
I use one for DI and thought it would be ok as s distortion pedal..when it was suggested I use one..FFS..!! It is an overdrive pedal at best and drives quite well. You have to want to get that sound to fully appreciate it..and I don't really want it anyway..but I thought it was nice bit of kit..well thought out and put together. The demos on the AG site show what it can do.. It should tighten up a flabby jazz sound, for sure

Not ideal Something might have to be said and you could end up with partners HAVING to take sides...and guess where that will have to be...!!

Don't know, but a friend of mine went to see them in Canada...as he is a fan..and said they were blown of stage by Kool and the Gand.. HTF does that happen.....???? -
You need a big amp for a cab like that. DB750 / DB751 ;-0
Would be my vote as well. Something with serious grunt which the DB' have

Matapm 610...?? I believe there was one on here recently, ditto Berg NV610. Not a one man lift, but with tilt back, should be pretty manageable. Ampeg 610... Just a thought. -
I thought it was most out of character as well, so I hope Bilbo reads this... maybe change the title to JAZZ sucks or something, then he is sure to.. FWIW... I wanted to pitch into the bunfight, but don't know who to pick on So I have posted about U2/Adam C and AC/DC ..
