I loved mine but it got sidelined when I started playing vintage gear. It was probably the best modern reissue I've owned. Very chunky neck and I know some feel they need the contours you get from '54 onwards but I liked mine. Sold now and someone got an awesome bass. Don't think I'd buy again as my GAS days have been behind me for a while now

Looks great. I've always wanted a 1973 as it's my birth year. I'm currently 3 yrs off but unlikely to get any closer. Still we can dream

I've always had an interest in an 8 string and like the YouTube clips (cheers). Personally I think some bands only notice when you mess up so I wouldn't take it so hard. It does grate sometimes though

The Japanese Fenders are nearly always exceptional if you get a chance to come across one. Personally if I was playing funk I'd lean towards a Jazz purely because they cut through a little more but there are plenty of examples of people doing that on P-basses. I'm a life long Fender player and currently play a Jazz although I'm probably more associated with Precisions. I'd also echo the comments about trying stuff out live rather than buying online. With your budget I'd also be looking at a day trip somewhere so you can try a few. Beat me to it on the earplugs comment! Last year (i.e this year) was good fun but I naively hadn't realised just how loud a room full of people slapping away would actually be. Having not bought any gear since the last one I guess I'm unlikely for 2012, unless I break my Orange amps mug

I was using Peavey from the late 80s until around 2005 - same combo & it never let me down. I couldn't care less what haters say about gear (Rotosound strings get knocked sometimes & then there is the anti-Fender brigade). Live & let live, I say. It'd be boring if we were all the same

We did our first album on vinyl having pressed on CD and it's become something of a vanity exercise really. We started selling the record at £15 and it just didn't sell. We now offer it at a tenner and it still hardly sells. The CDs will sell but even offering free digital download with the vinyl people tend to buy CD. So with the new album (that was very much conceived as an old fashioned "record") it's just available on CD with a small gap at the end of the "last track of side 1" to show it was intended as a record. It's also worth mentioning your mastering is for a CD mix so you also need to factor an album remaster into your costs for the vinyl pressing. It's great having the album on vinyl...maybe not so great having another 390 copies sitting upstairs! Oh & most firms are pretty similar price wise

Apologies to the mods if this should be in a different section, but my band has a gap in our gigging schedule and will be around Liverpool on Friday 11th November. We'll be available to do some stripped back acoustic Americana show. Not massively bothered about any fees, just so long as we can pass a hat around AND we're not just playing to just the bar staff. We're up playing a big Americana festival the next day before going on to Leicester so will be at a loose end. If not Liverpool, anywhere nearby would be better than not playing Can anyone help? Either with support slots, venues to try or any pointers. Cheers in advance EDITED to include wider catchment area

Never liked Great White although I did like some 80s Rock, back in the day. I am sure there are those who do prefer Great White. Hadn't heard the Quo do it

[/quote] ECC83 Retro Harma Valves as mentioned in my signature strip. Takes a little of the grunt off so the sound doesn't break up quite so early. It's a subtle difference but a step in the right direction

I was around my girlfriend's house last night when her Dad came over. It's the second time I have met him and he's a bassist too. He'd told me he had a Fender Precision he'd bought in 1973 (I checked the serial number and his memory serves him well). Anyhow, he brought his bass over. He's got the original non-Fender case but has changed the pickguard, pickup and bridge. I gather he has all the original parts but I don't think they are in a brilliant state (all working fine though). It was his main gigging bass for most of his career so one that screams mojo rather than a museum piece. The frets have a fair bit of life on it but it would probably benefit from a refret at some point in the future. He'd quite rightly never sell it but I was curious as to what people thought it'd be worth. It's pretty lightweight too incidentally. I loved playing it! It's quite cool having a girlfriend who's Dad is a player - she did look a bit bored when we were discussing the pro's and con's of flats verses roundwounds and at my age I should know to keep such conversation away from a partner!
