1. Superb BBC4 programme as always. I must confess as my Mum got me into Glen Campbell back in the 70s there wasn't much about his career I didn't know. That said the Alzheimer's stuff at the end was just heartbreaking. Best documentary I've seen in a while
2. This is outrageous! Best band, I could understand
3. I had one and if I ever regretted selling a bass (I don't) this would be the one. £410 is actually a pretty good deal - these can go for £700+ Put flats on and you'll be in retro heaven
4. Having played Orange for the last couple of years they are a classic brand but not really known as classic in combination. I used to like Fender & Ampeg but wanted to be a little different. I agree about Vox & Hofner. The Mesa / PRS thing is popular but not on the scene I play on. Surely classic is whatever works for you though?
5. Probably one of the early rockabilly cats, man those are some sweeet shoes. Size 11 for me please..... Sorry, have I missed the point?
6. Just booked a dinner and movie for Friday - thank god for the iplayer!
7. Small crossover as I'm there with my girlfriend until 16th. Didn't fancy dragging her around the music shops but this link may be of interest http://www.newsday.com/travel/new-york-city-rock-and-roll-landmarks-1.1569369
8. My mispent youth of posing means as I rapidly approach 40 it now feels unnatural if it's anything other than very low. I know it's wrong but it was my own doing. I've tried raising it but now just accept I look to others like I play like a midlife crisis!
9. I always favoured buying more music when I was younger rather than getting a decent stereo. The quest for finding great albums was greater than the desire to hear them sounding at their best. About 3 years ago I was running out of ideas for artists to explore so I went to Richer Sounds and bought a decent set of speakers, a good amp, a turntable etc. What a difference - although I find it preferable having the massive collection of music to enjoy with it. I remember a kid at school (1980s) who had the top of the range stereo and only about 3 albums which I never got. He equally couldn't get why I had 200 records and a cheap dansette. We're all different I guess. I also now have some £150 laptop speakers which make YouTube sound much more acceptable.
10. I assume it is just a typo in the header?
11. On any bass forum there are always a very vocal minority who knock Fender. Some aspects of what they say I can see sense in but Fender (for me at least) couldn't have explained why they can rightfully claim he crown any better than with this ad from the late 70s http://www.flickr.co...man/4041666679/
12. I have never illegally downloaded any music for free & I'm happy to play along with YouTube or streamed music if it's not something I want my own copy of.
13. I had a black Epiphone bass version back around 2004. Looked the part but really weak sounding pickups. If I owned it now I'd definitely be looking to beef up the sound
14. I made the same mistake as you - short scale basses don't need heavy strings hence the gauges Rotosound offer. I have a .110 or .115 E string on my Fenders but when I started playing a Hofner I tried with the heavy strings only to find out from my shop that if it's shorter than 34" you can come down a few gauges and still get the sound. I put some roto flats on and it sounded great. It feels wrong writing this down but trust me it works fine
15. I believe it is and the screw is singular so perhaps needs to be more sturdy. Tell me I'm wrong anyone???? But it's what I've always assumed http://www.flickr.co...57626071834176/
16. My understanding was that it could be fitted in the "where it should be" place OR there was a hole for the old fashioned 50s style just below the strings for that Brian Wilson technique with the thumb. If you post a picture it may help
17. Unless I'm mistaken it's a hole for the thumb rest but the hole isn't drilled
18. I too would wear a long sleeved shirt or thin jacket. I refuse to wear a sweatband on the grounds that it's not 1985 and I don't play Heavy Metal
19. Saw him in 2011, he was great fun. Didn't watch it tonight but he's doing what he does well right now. I'd have lost the backing vocalist (or got one who doesn't struggle with his keys so much) but generally he's doing well
20. roll back the tone, stick some foam under the bridge and if you want clicky then play it with a pick
21. Loving that back row With photobucket you click IMG code rather than the other 3 options to share as a picture
22. We'll all have our own opinions but I personally wouldn't touch one. I'd opt for something light and portable like a Hofner but then we're all different. I'm too old fashioned
23.
It happens the other way around sometimes
I agree, snobbery cuts all ways. I've been "advised" to play 5 string once but decided against joining that band. I agree with the few posts that say that your kit *can* sometimes suggest whether you'd be right for the gig and I don't think this is overt snobbery. I've played everything from english folk to punk to metal to country and you need to know something about the genre. If it is obvious from speaking to you within a minute or so that despite your BC Rich Warlock you know something about folk music, I don't see the problem but equally pulling out a Hofner Beatle Bass and not knowing any Bolt Thrower songs for the thrash band you are auditioning may win you few allies!
24. Away from the recordings both Quo guitarists are rumoured to be excellent players & yet the general view is "3 chords, can't play etc". Playing in half full pubs & clubs as a sideline I don't want to knock any professional musician as they are out there & doing it. I'm no U2 fan but I've worked with people who really rate that guy so fair play to him.
25. I have a little retro sports bag. When I was more of a kit monster I had a tool box (top tip for gear heads) but now I just need a few things so the bag does the job
