The genres of music I like have dictated it really. Even when I was playing in a straight rock band I remember being 20 and going into a music shop to look at upright basses. I always wanted one even if (at the time) the plan was to have something in the house I couldn't play at all. At 40 some of my favourite gigs I've played have been on the upright bass.

I'd be sorely tempted by Ampeg's PF range personally but Orange have great customer relations and touch wood mine's been reliable for over 3yrs now

I've noticed I get a lot of women talk to me when I play the upright bass. So echo those comments. Generally I think guitars and basses can both be very sexy instruments in the right hands. Less so the Keytar!

I separated and quickly divorced in the last 3 years after a 17yr relationship. I don't think it's a bass thing but I definitely think if I wasn't so into music I would have been better in the relationship. The fact that I don't regret it suggests it probably wasn't the best marriage anyway. Cost me a few instruments just to keep things afloat but again it finally cured the GAS!

Bill Haley died over 30yrs ago and it looks like bass player Marshall Lytle is now also dead after a battle with lung cancer. One of the early pioneers of rock 'n' roll slap bass, the NY Times obituary makes for interesting reading on his early career and how he got the technique. I'm 100% in agreement with BigRedX here (he's obviously not talking about 70s Fenders!). I don't dislike anyone I've worked with but a couple of people in my 2 current bands I probably wouldn't actively seek out after the band ends. Just a case of little in common outside of the band. I think you should at least be able to tolerate people. And I believe I am working with people who are likely to be the types of friends that are friends for life.

If they are set up well they are excellent, if they are badly set up the guitars tend to go out of tune easily. I have one on a tele that never seems to go out of tune

I had a solid wood one, very nice cheap way of owning a 70s bass. If you want a vintage bass then mine was great but if you are looking for something like a Squier or MIM, I'd just buy new

Lozz earlier stated about my Terror head and SP210 cab. It's been my only set up for about 3yrs now. If I'd have had the extra funds I'd have gone 212 but the 210 is great fun and I've never regretted it. I tend to find in smaller venues it fills out the sound and anything bigger *always* has a sound engineer so we put me through the PA. I am forever getting favourable comments from people on my set up. I have noticed a few knock the SP Orange cabs on here but then you could say that with any of the kit spoken about on Basschat. It's strange though as they aren't that common so I do wonder if everyone knocking the things has down more than just try them in a shop. Orange now do a conventional OBC210 too or the single option of the 410 or 115 could work for those worried about going down the Smart Power route.

My guitarist has a habit of saying "yes" repeatedly in a series of changing funny voices. My old drummer stole the show by speaking backwards into the mic and then suggesting that the sound engineer had plugged it in wrong - bless her, she checked!

Through this website I got into Z10 laptop speakers for when I am online and was amazed that I could suddenly hear basslines! I was listening to a lot of music at that time on my computer and was missing loads. I have since gone to Richer Sounds and got a load of mid range separates to play vinyl, CD and even dock the iPod. Again huge difference from my previous stereos. And I listen to a lot of music in the car. I was of the opinion that money should be spent buying more music but having bought 1000s of albums over the years it is nice to have decent stereo equipment on which to enjoy that music.

I too have similar views to the OP. Just because someone was in a film 40yrs ago that you saw on ITV or played on a record you liked but haven't actually played for at least 15yrs does not justify the public out pouring of grief. When I was at college Freddie Mercury died and the next day when I walked through the halls of residence Radio Gaga was blasting out of every other room. Nobody had ever mentioned Queen at college before and the whole thing just didn't sit right with me. Grief should be a private time of reflection and I do feel a little awkward around some of the social media tributes. And to be a mass of contradiction I have personally commented on 2 or 3 myself over the years but not every single celebrity who has lived to a ripe old age and I hardly knew their work. Apologies for my soap box rant!

I reckon I can count the number of times my television has been switched on during the last couple of years on one hand. If it wasn't for forums / social networking I wouldn't even know it had been on.

Like Fat Rich I too was [color=#282828][font=helvetica, arial, sans-serif]a teenager in the eighties and also always hated the pop scene at that time. The biggest influence in my formative years was my parents record collection so ranging 50s, 60s and 70s. I tend to worry about things I can change so it doesn't upset me that I was born in the early 70s (far from it!) but I think it would have been cooler to have had a chance to see and play with the bands who influenced me the most. When I was at school I suggested a Beatles cover for our band & was met with the usual muso snobbery. "You just don't touch the Beatles" the guitarist told me. Amazed by this stance I suggested he didn't even know anything about the band. His reply still haunts me to this day. "Yeah I do, it's George Lennon and that!"

I recently joined a rockabilly band but we're far from pure and the singer / guitarist of this 3 piece was saying just at the last practice that we have elements of everything from swing to surf in what we do. I concur. It's a style of music I've always liked whilst never really dipping much more than a big toe in the water
