1. I've decided to sell my westone thunder 1A. It's one of the earlier ones, with the p-style split coil pickup. I seem to recall it's a 1983 vintage, but I can find out for sure. Body has been stripped and refinished in natural by the previous owner. Headstock survived in original black. All original hardware as far as I can tell, down to the thin switches and brass knobs. It even has a non-original brass pickup mask which I will include in the sale but is not actually bolted on (previous owner again). Active 18v circuit with a single boost knob. Active/passive switch. Lovely tone, and quite versatile. I have used it extensively for practicing and gigging up until a year ago. Pics prove it, but I can take closeups of the bass if you want me to. apologies for the face, can't refinish that... I'm thinking £130 + shipping, what do you think? 2. Kim Deal used an aria pro II cardinal for much of her time with the pixies
  3. I read somewhere that Hulk Hogan was recruited for wrestling after being spotted playing bass with his band in a bar in the US. I wonder if he's here on BC...
  4.
Well I thought I would just write a wee bit to say than you to you lot for buying/selling amps and most of all all your advice. Well the big chunky and amazing sounding H&K Quantum 600 eventually sold. To be honest, I had the room or a car I would never have sold it, it has an amazing warm valvey tone with massive punch in the low mids. It's been replaced with keith's old Tecamp puma 1000. and wow... under 3kg, and small.... I'm only using half of it (so 500w) at the mo... and so loud sounding. It's a thinner faster sound, not got the depth or thickness of the quantum.... but blow me down, what a low end! so thick and loud and there, it makes you realise some amps must start cutting the volume below a certain point. There is a lovely clearness to the tone, i could hear slight intonation and tuning issues that i never did on the warmth of the H&K. I've only had a while but it seems to have so many different sounds it can make. flat it sounds awesome... then the taste knob seems to be more vintage sounding one way, and scooped and aggressive the other, combined with the eq this seems limitless possibilities. And not even looked at the compressor yet. Quite an amp.
Truly outstanding amps, the tecamps. I tend to keep the taste either at 12 o'clock or all the way up clockwise, depending on what bass adn tune i'm playing. Hard to beat, I decided I'm not selling mine after all, too good to let go.
  5.
thats a real cool cookie you have there. and in great shape by the looks of it (the bass, sorry )
You had me flattered for a bit there...
  6.
I'd like to contribute that I'm probably going to gig with my all original Ned Callan on saturday. That's its first outing since spending a lot of time being brought back up to scratch. If possible, I'll share some pics and soundclips after i'm done.
Not quite as rock and roll as some others, but there... 7. Not being a pro I can only try to transfer my experience in other fields to this, and use my imagination. I think "pro" is the keyword here. Unless a gig would prevent me from getting work elsewhere, and would pigeonhole me in a certain religious and/or political scene, I'd probably take it. Other gigs that I wouldn't take are the ones that are simply not paying well enough to be worth the effort.
  8.
That would be really great! I have tried to find other owners but with only around 50 customs made, as well as the stuff he did for John, the only things made in any quantity were the Ned Callan Range and its been tough trying to track any of them down. Cheers.
As promised, three recording of my playing Ned at a gig at the Mayfair, Musselburgh. Recording made with a zoom H1 positioned on top of a door on the side of the room. Definitely not the best place, but best we could manage. I was playing Ned through an orange terror bass, driving a TC Electronics RS212. Volume could have been higher, but hey, there it is. Apologies for the chitchat you hear at times, some folks just stood in front of the recorder...

  10. More please, i'm enjoying this *eats popcorn*
  11.
Thanks, and sorry to confuse, guys, but remember you're talking to yer typical bassist here - only marginally more intelligent than yer typical drummer. The DI Out on the combo is XLR. I did ask the guitarist (when I spoke to him a few days ago) what socket I'd be going into on his desk, and he said first "XLR", then changed his mind and said "maybe 1/4" jack would be better". Don't know why, and I never thought to quiz him on the point. However, this would obviously suggest that the PA can take both XLR-in and 1/4" jack-in. As to which would be better, that's where I'm clueless. Is there a standard assumption here that XLR to XLR is the better way to go? Thanks again for taking the time to visit / help out.
I think that XLR inputs on mixer desks are meant for unbalanced signals such as mikes, and 1/4'' jack tend to be for balanced signals. I would imagine that the signal coming from the DI output is more likely to be balanced, hence your guitarist's suggestion.
  12.
Ibanez keep a stock of parts. My first port of call would be the UK distributor: Headstock Distribution Ltd. Unit G1 Coombswood West, Steelpark Road, , Halesowen, B62 8HD, UK Tel.+44 (0)121 5086666 mail: [email protected]
Good call, thanks
  13. I've got this Ibanez SR800LE, made in japan, bought it new in 1991 or so (bought it on the same day I bought BSSM by RHCP). For a long time it lived in my parents' house in Italy, and when I picked it up I found that the pot that pans betwen the pickups doesn't work anymore. The repair guy said he couldn't fix it, as the pot is infact a much more complicated piece of kit, with a circuit board attached to it. My question is: where can I buy the replacement part? Is there an dealer that has old ibanez parts? Anyone has got one spare? Let me know, it's a lovely bass that has been ill for a long time and wants to come back to full health!
  14.
Have a bump on me..... Can't believe noone's snapped this baby up. Wake up BC, this amp is the dogs bollix. If you want all valve point to point georgeous amp wizardry at great value price, this is your chance. These amps are legendary and this is your chance. If I didn't have one already I would be all over this.
I know, i'm trying to put together the pennies...
  15.
Not always! Ibanez Musician (guitar) for £95? Also got my CSL JapCrap J there for £60. And a Cimar Jazz for £75... Last year they had a cheesy Chinese fake Les Paul Supreme in the window for about £1200 - it was there for a while. It's always worth a look in there, one way or the other. Jon.
Fog in hell! I'd better get there double quick with some spare dosh (as if I had any!)
  16.
'Interesting' and 'simple' aren't mutually exclusive. You could play one note in a bar, which is simple, but the note you choose to play and how and wherein the bar you play it can make that note interesting.
This There's a time and a song for everything, IMO.
  17.
Completely agree about the eq, but it's never bothered me as I play through a cab that doesn't really colour the sound very much and I have decent eq on my basses, can understand why this might bother people with passive basses though.
That would be me then It's one of those things: either its sound is a revelation and you love it, or you don't and you can't change it much. I was looking for something more portable and powerful than my "nearly bassman" head, but with a similar tone. Unfortunately this isn't, so unlucky for me, and good luck to you all out there who love it! (Peace...)
  18. There's a good one in edinburgh, on queen street. Unfortunately, they seem to do the reasearch and know how much thin gs are worth. Often has quite interesting things
  19. Would it be ok to express a less enthusiastic opinion on the terror bass head? I went into a local shop to A/B the orange TB and my tecamp puma 350. I was looking for a more valvey tone from a small head, so the TB would be an ideal choice. I played both of them through an orange sp10 cab with my T40. I walked back out with my tecamp. The TB has got a nice tone to it, but the eq on the orange might as well not have been there. I found that I wanted a bit more depth to the tone, but couldn't get it. The gain control does indeed add grit in a nice and touch-controllable way, but I found that it wasn't enough for me. Nice try, but i'll keep looking for something else. Don't shoot me, please, I just wanted to share...
  20. Last night, at band practice, my guitarist found that the fender M80 combo he's been using for practice wouldn't produce any sound, even though the electrics fire up ok. I've noticed it's US made and it's got a 12'' eminence blue sticker driver, so i'm wondering if it's worth repairing, bearing in mind that it could a simple fix. I've seen a couple offered at around $200 in the US, but none here. It's the black paint one, not the grey carpet version. (By the way he then played for the night through my bassman clone head and the ashdown cab, and he loved it ... )

    Gig Amp

Hartke kickback combos, the ones with aluminium cone, especially the 15 inch one. Gigged for a few years with one. No complaints, great tone, good volume, very handy tiltback option. Almost regret selling it at times
  22. Some interest, but still available Bump
  23. http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/47/70592947.html "Grant" jazz copy with hardcase, near edinburgh, for very little dosh. I am leaving tomorrow morning for holidays, so I'm going to miss this, otherwise I would have had it. I understand Grant was the importer's name of the usual 70's JapCrap. Some say that Grant was infact the name of a Glasgow music shop in the 70's and 80's, and that they were the original importers of these.
  24. Want. Can't afford. The T-40 is one of the most awesome, inspiring and satisfying bass to play I've ever owned or used. Mine gets instinctively picked up for live work ahead of anything else, and I have to make a concious effort to put it down and use anything else.
  25. It looks original from the pic, and in good condition. The price looks very good, I'd buy it if I was local, and I already have one of them!
