1. I've decided to try and flog my trusty Hartke Kickback 15 combo (link to specs). Bought it new about three years ago, seen lots of home practice, about 10 quiet gigs, and one loud one which made me buy my bigger rig. Since then it has been confined to home and band practice. It is in very good original condition, no damage, no wear and tear, and it sound exactly as new. I'm asking [s]£200[/s] £190 for this nearly new example. This will include (non-urgent) postage. I'm in Edinburgh, can also deliver to up to about 40 miles radius. Cheers, Marco
2. The title says most of it. I believe this is a mid-late 80's marshall cab, 1x15, rated at 250W, 8ohm. It is equipped with a celestion sidewinder, has huge bottom end and is as warm as you like. Not ideal for sparkly top end sounds though... It looks like it has had an intersting life so far. It is currently painted entirely black, but you can just see some camouflage (!) paint in unexposed, hard to reach places. Rumour has it that it was part of the backline for some 80's power trio... It is not extremely heavy, I reckon around 60lbs. I can weigh it on the scales if you like. It has a rather unusual shape, it is quite tall and narrow. Approximate size is 20x30x15 inches (WxHxD) Here is a couple of (poor quality) pics, I can take better one if needed I used it for three gigs, served me beautifully, i'm asking [s]£170[/s] £150. I'll happily answer any question I can. Marco
3. I bagged the last available puma 350 head on my way to a gig... Tried the fenomenal 1x12 combo in the shop, inquired about any puma heads still lying about, helpful staff saw one last one in the glasgow shop, out came my Visa, and the rest is history. Awaiting delivery now... Seriously tempted by one of their smaller cabs, after humping my Ampeg cab up and down from the second floor all by myself.
4. Pics my T-40 in action. Apologies for the bassface...
5.
In that case throw all the acoustic advice out of the window. Alex
Is it because of the shape of the room, or the shape of the audience?
6. Thank you all, great advice all-round. The problem is essentially that our next gig is an halloween affair at a rugby club, i wouldn't want anyone drunkenly leaning on my stack, toppling it on some unsuspecting punter, or even worse, on more kit, with the resulting injuries and trouble that comes with it. No amount of rubber feet, planks or anything else will stop anyone who wants to topple the stack, but maybe I can prevent accidental damage... So first of all i'll try turning the marshall on its side, and see if the ampeg fits better on the top of it, with or without feet. I suppose the fact that the huge port will now be on the bottom will not affect the sound of the marshall...If that doesn't work, i'll try repositioning the feet of the ampeg closer together. I think the head is rated at 210 watts into 4 ohms, and the marshall was distorting quite a bit when it had to take the full load. With both cabs, i usually run the head at around half volume and gain, and get the desired volume with little or no distorsion (to my ears). Incidentally, can anyone identify the model of the marshall cab? I think it's a 1555, but the plaque at the back is worn has been painted over, so I can't read it
7. I need a piece of advice please. I have recently acquire an ampeg b410hlf cab, to go with my marshall 1x15 into my peavey head. I like the sound and all, by my problem is with the stacking of the cabs. First of all the sizes don't match, so i can't put the 4x10 on the 1x15 (the marshall is rather tall and narrow) without risking a collapse. I have them stacked like that at home, and the rubber feet of the ampeg can't sit properly on the 1x15. Second, most of the gigs we play are in places where there is no raised stage, such as function rooms and sport clubs. I have put the cabs on the ground next to each other, but I feel that my sound gets lost against the people dancing in front of the band, especially the low end. So what should i do? Should i put the 4x10 on the bottom with the 1x15 on the top? Should I stop worrying and keep both cabs next to each otheron the floor? Should i put them next to each other, but on a raised platform of some kind? Any advice will be appreciated. Oh, buying a matching ampeg 1x15 cab is not an option now I attach the picture of what the cabs look like when they're on the ground, and when they are (precariously) stacked
8. Poor picture from camera phone, apologies. Before you ask, I live on the second floor, and that is my living room... This other picture is the same rig at a gig, looks less menacing but it's equally heavy
9. I just had mine freshly setup, new strings on, and out for a gig on saturday night. Awesome as ever. Maybe too awesome for some of the softer numbers on our setlist, but hey-ho, been told by my band mates that switching bass while on stage is a little naff, so it's T-40 all the way! Maybe i'll post a pic or two when I get them.
10. on gumtree These were probably cheap to start with, but maybe someone is looking for an old sg-shaped bass... Not mine, i hasten to add...
11.
Looks a bit suspicious to me, i looked at it and read all the description on it... i dunno, just looks a bit wierd that a Spector Legend 4 is up for sale for £80...
I agree, yet the guy says it's the (cheaper) passive version, and it looks a little unloved, with no vol and tone knobs etc. I'm not particularly interested atm, maybe someone else...
12. looks interesting, anybody had a look?
13. I'm now the proud new owner of this fantastic piece of kit! Thanks Jon!
14. Personally, I think this recording makes it quite hard to make a judgement. It all sounds very tinny, and you can hardly hear the voice and bass, while guitars and drums are very loud. A better recording will make you sound a lot more accomplished and polished, and it would make it easier to give suggestions.
15.
Australia-Pacific? I thought Toon wood grew only in the suburbs of Newcastle ...
Clearly an export wood then
16.
Ah, Givson - Mother India's finest! I had the intriguing experience of examining one of these first-hand, in my local Crack Convertors a couple of years back. You really do get the impression that a few containers of random guitar parts washed up off Mumbai & someone who'd never seen a guitar before put them together with the aid of a 1963 Teisco catalogue. I've actually seen these turn up on Ebay being fobbed off as 60s oddities - anyway the website's here - the peculiar naming conventions are why the Ebay seller assumes his bass is Hawaiian: http://www.givson.com/home.html If you really want a Givson GB King bass (OK, I know you don't, but it's theoretical, right?) Raj Musicals will do you one brand new for about £60. Air fare to New Delhi not included. Jon.
I WANT ONE! At first I thought that Toon wood was actually a typo, but then i did some research, and it looks like it's some kind of australia-pacific wood, apparently a good tone wood.
17. What about Hell's bells - ACDC, or Zombie - the cranberries?
18. The bridge bit in Soul Man, where it drop to G/C or whatever it is...I still never play the same sequence twice...
19.
Always liked the look of these, but never played one. that black/maple config is my fave too. but arent they really heavy?
Extremely, but I don't care.
20. I bought one of these here on BC earlier this year, after trying one at some jam night while I was on holiday. The one I got is from 1980 i seem to recall, black/black/maple, just like the one in the pic. FANTASTIC piece of kit. The neck is just right for me, and I find the weight reassuring. The controls are a little quirky, but that adds even more charm, and frankly they let you find the right sound almost all the time, without having to fiddle with amp. I can always cut through the mix like it's nobody's business, and I still retain lots of bottom end. I use it with a Peavey head of the same age, and the sounds i'm getting are fantastically growly and deep, yet midrangy and honky if needed. Maybe not very hifi, but that's not my main thing anyway. Oh, and the looks and questions you get at gigs are a bonus, and a nice tickle for my ego. All this for less than 300 pounds. I wish i bought one sooner.
21. And another bump! Is it too pricey? Make me an offer...
22.
No real reason, tbh, it's all just wood (usually) & wire. Unless there's something fundamentally wrong with the neck construction of a cheap bass, it can be set up to play just as well as its 4-figure counterpart, electronics & hardware can be replaced fairly inexpensively and more often than not the budget instruments these days are made from halfway-decent quality timber as opposed to the splintery plywood of a few decades ago. I like basses (and g*it*rs  ) in general and like to have lots, and lots, and lots - hence I don't spend very much on individual instruments & I tend not to keep many of them very long. This also helps to explain my fascination with old JapCrap - there were some superb quality instruments which these days don't change hands for huge amounts of money so it's easy to have a varied & interesting vintage collection for the price of a couple of "decent" brand instruments. If I had limitless money I'd doubtless have as many top-end instruments as I do cheap old junk, though... Jon.
+1 I'm much more inclined to be impressed by a cheaper instrument than by an expensive one.
