1.
owowwo that socket set looks like it could do a thing or two meter the polepieces to earth one at a time any earthing there means the insulation on the windings have gone usually on the outside poles..especially on jazz with narrow bobbins thats my guess... the other is that the magnetism has degraded on the pole and isnt relaying the movement to the windings sufficiently can the pup be installed the other way round just to do an A/B on your nut theory cheers
I'll take the bass apart this weekend and try some of the things you suggest, thanks. Installing it the other way round will answer many of my questions, i believe. IfI find that in fact one of the poles is somehow faulty, i'm going to have someone look at it, as I don't have the kit to do anything about it...
 2. Hello all, I've got this quite unusual Ned Callan long scale bass I bought here on BC from Bassassin. After having the neck fixed (two of the holding screws weren't...), I am now moving to the nextlittle issue: the pickup behaves strangely with the E string. The symptoms are weak response on the open E, and 5th and 7th fret harmonics just don't sound at all. It all seems to ring as it should when unplugged, but all the above happens when i plug it in. The other three strings sound just fine. The pickup is a single coil, even though the casing is massive... I have a feeling that I may be looking at two different problems here. The neck has got a zero fret, and the the nut is quite wide on the E string. I wonder if I am losing oomph with the open E because of the sideways movement that the loose nut allows. Regarding the harmonics, it could be that the pickup needs rewinding. Maybe old wires need to be replaced to recover the original response. Or maybe I should just buy a replacement pickup, and keep the original one in a drawer for when (if) I sell it. Any opinions? cheers, Marco (Jon I hope you don't mind if I use one of your pics of the bass)
 3. My fender aerodyne Precision has got a p/j configuration, and it is wired so that the p pickup has stronger output. That is not a mod, it came like this from the factory. It is clear that the j pickup essentially adds definition to the P sound, but it is quite weedy when soloed. I wonder if that kind of wiring is the norm for P/J fenders

 5. Well, what can i say other than bump? Oh yes, i'm again interested in trades and p/x over a straight sale. I will take the money, however
 6. Thanks for all your advice, i'll be looking at my options when i come back from holidays, cheers.
 7.
They do go in the For Sale section reasonably regularly. Great basses for the money (S/H) too IMO.
I've seen a fair few, just wondering if there are some that I should be looking out for more than others.
 8. I just want to dip my toe in the world of J basses, and I don't want to spend much money at all. What I'm looking for is something that sounds and looks approximately like a jazz. I am not looking for any subtleties or finesse. Are some makes better than others? Is it just a matter of being lucky with a cheaply built copy? Is there any point in looking at older oriental versions of a jazz bass? I reckon that second hand is probably best, but the question still remains: what is worth looking out for? Is anyone likely to ever want to sell a VM squier Jazz?
 9. I think it's a different rating. It could be that the speaker is rated at 250w by the manufacturer using their own test, but could take 300W RMS. After all, the RMS power handling is not quoted explicitly in the data sheet. Maybe asking the manufacturer of the speakers could help? I see they are italian, I'll be happy to help with any language problem
 10.
Imagine if all car manufacturers had their own version of MPH. How fast would you be travelling at any time and how would you stick to the speed limit? RMS is the only constant reference.
Even there you can have a certain level of variation. It doesn't say what level of distortion was deemed acceptable when taking measurement, for example. The speaker in question has a rating value obtained using using pink noise, I understand it's often sine wave or even square waves that are used.
 11. I would say that the "rated power" is close in concept to "RMS power", and music power refers to the maximum peak it can handle without clipping. RMS power can be obtained by testing the speaker with a sine wave of a certain Root Mean Square power X, where X is the maximum power the speaker can take without distorting (or with a small but acceptable amount of distortion). The manufacturer here says they do the test using pink noise, which I understand is another, possibly more realistic way of testing for power rating.
 12.
I haven't had the pleasure of checking out the current ones, but they look good - wouldn't mind one myself to keep my blueburst one company. The only obvious differences I can see are that the truss rod adjusts at the headstock end & has a truss rod cover, so you don't have to take the neck off to tweak it (although I can't remember when I last had to do it), plus it has more authentic pointy knobs (I wonder if these are available as a retrofit for mine )
I can tell you that the point knobs are a right pain, they are in the way of each other, and they are very easy to turn accidentally while playing. Maybe we can do a swap if I get it?
 13.
I forgot about it as I was out and about, I got 2 new basses yesterday so I'm happy.
I forgot I had family coming and visit, so I was out with the all the time and failed to place a single bid. I might go for the current reissue in january, we'll see.
 14.
This feels like a really silly question but I genuinely don't get it. If you're going to name the notes after letters of the alphabet, why would C be first? Or does all this relate to some other alphabet?
Because you can't get lower than the bottom of the C.... Sorry I'm hungover after the office Xmas party, couldn't help myself
 15.
Wayne & Razze - good luck chaps & may the best man win If either of you do [s]win[/s] purchase it, I hope you look as cool than I do playing mine
An interesting point is that you can have a brand new copperburst version of this for around £280. Hopefully this will keep to auction honest... I'm going to have one of these sooner or later!
 16. Substantial drop on price, I want rid of this
 17. bump, maybe someone will take a shine to this tonight!
 18.
Nah, I have a price if it goes for more so be it. good luck mate.
Actually so do I. I have grown sensible over the years... Good luck to you
 19.
I had my eye on this for a few days, I'll get it if it goes at the right price.
I want it too! Bid war?
 20. On Ebay So I fancy one of these, but i've only tried the new "dead on '58" reissues. Is this going to be close to it? Anyone has any ideas how old it may be, or how much it may be going for?
 21.
No, but they will alter your ability to judge a cab as worthy or not of even bothering to test given the application for which you are going to buy it though. How many times have I heard on this forum that all that counts is the sound on the gig? Why is that such a huge issue compared to turning up loud in the shop? Why can you not have any idea how well a cab will perform on the gig given the tone in the shop? Part of this is because you cant even guess given the specs that are published. Alex is trying to get widespread demand for proper useful specs to be published that will definitely enable and empower you the end user. Why are any of you fighting that? What is the problem? No one is suggesting that you dont need to go and hear a cab because of this spec. All that is being suggested is that a given cab with this spec should produce a similar real world volume to another cab with this spec the same as it. That is what the much hated watts RMS is supposed or purported to do now, but doesnt. It doesnt mean you will like the sound, just that there should be x amount of sound possible from the cab. Or am I very much mistaken Alex?
I am actually in agreement with you. I was advocating the addition of further useful specs to the datasheet, to corroborate what you hear when you try it. Maybe I didn't phrase it the best possible way...
 22.
All true, but without science and facts you will not get advancements in the technology that produces the sounds you are auditioning with your ears and reduces the weight of your rig.
But do you, as the end user, care? For example, for any cab, if the specs look great but the cabs sound sh*te, would you still buy them?!

Will the appearance of more specs on the datasheet alter the quality of the sound that comes out of the speaker?
 23.
Whats with all the science? What's wrong with auditioning cabs by using your ears? At the end of the day, that is what you are going to be hearing your cabs with. You should take the following into account. Tone - does the cab make your gear sound pleasant to your ears? Volume - is it loud enough for your needs? Portability/Weight - is it going to be a nightmare to get to gigs? Looks - do you like the look of your gear or does it make you wince every time you look at it? Compatability - is the cab suited to work with your gear e.g. does the impedance of the cab and amp match? Specs on paper mean nothing. Performance in the real world means everything.
All true, but without science and facts you will not get advancements in the technology that produces the sounds you are auditioning with your ears and reduces the weight of your rig.
 24. I am wondering if schecters simply don't sell or trade... I think it's great, well built, and very versatile. It just isn't right or the stuff I do at the moment, simple as that If it's a price issue, let me know, i understand Xmas is coming up and all. I will post this, and anyone is welcome to come and have a play
