My post was about how the fabled 'unique' Rickenbacker tone can apparently be acheived by a bass with very different electronics, something I always doubted possible. FWIW, the idea that tone and sound is dictated solely by the player, rather than the gear, is one I find ludicrous. But that's another thread.

Not the classical guitar-style slotted headstocks. Little can be found of it's history online though sadly. I've edited the original post now to make it clear this isn't a Rick, but just sounds remarkably like one!

[/quote] Both Geddy Lee and Chris Squire get very different tones from their Ricks and Jazzes, there's very little sonic confusion between the two - except on Moving Pictures where all the bass tracks are smothered in effects!

I've always thought so. But I've just stumbled upon this live clip of Renaissance and Jon Camp's extraordinary Dick Knight double-neck makes a remarkably convincing noise, despite the different pickups. I now have in my hands a beautiful Lakland DJ4, previously belonging to Gareth (Smaz). Gareth was good enough to meet me half way and brought along a wonderful little headphone amp so I could have a listen. Gareth even contacted me after we got home to make sure everything was ok with the bass. I can only echo what's already been said - this bloke's a credit to the forum.

I'm going to the O2. I'm a massive fan anyway and it's been an ambition of mine for years. He's not very popular on here it seems but who knows how many more opportunities there will be to see him? Go for it I say! It's a bit unfair to say his voice is 'shot' though... 😉

That's such a shame! I found a BC Rich Ironbird in a CC a few years ago with a Robin Hood neck. I took a chance as it was cheap and as luck would have it the shop ad tuned the bass ridiculously high - when tuned correctly the neck settled down nicely.

There's something you don't see every day! I've always loved the look of the Excess, never tried one though.

I'm not familiar with this exact model but I've never heard a P that didn't sound like a P.

I had it over Xmas! Irritating at worst. Luckily I didn't have any gigs or rehearsals so it wasn't really a bother. Mind you the itchiness and bumps went away after a couple of days so I must have had it a lot milder than you.

I doubt any band rehearse in shirts and ties. You would forever be remembered as 'that guy who turned up to audition in a dinner suit'.
