1. Im very keen to know how it compares to the AG500. Is it the same or are there noticeable difference in sound. Im tempted by one to reduce my baggage. Dan
2.
Hmmm, I do like a nice warm, fat, thuddy sound.
Ampeg, and you retain the definition. I used to have the most basic ampeg 410 and loved it. +1 for checking the FS section, youll find a great deal on there. Dan
3. Thanks for spotting that! A really good watch, thoroughly enjoyed it. They really are a phenomenally excellent band.Music is a better place with The Blockheads. The first time I saw them play was a few years ago at Alnwick playhouse, they must have been 'getting back on their feet' since Ian's death as the place wasn't even half full! Sitting in the next row in front was a lad who must have been about 12. Give his parents a pat on the back! A little something for you all; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUx25280XIo Dan
4. Stunning bass!! Good luck with the sale. Giblett is a pleasure to deal with, buy with confidence! (Fretless still going strong to by the way!) Dan
5. I was about to post the same question! Ill follow this thread, Im very keen to try one to and hear of other peoples view on them. Dan
6. I have a 410 HR to. Excellent cabs, never 'farted' on me ever before, it can take an insane amount! Lovely clean sound with tonnes of bottom and stacks of mid and the highs pull out nicely resulting in an amazing all round sound. Definitely worth the punt! Im pleased I bought mine with out a single regret. They're very reliable cabs to, I think they claim their fail rate to be something ridiculous like 0.6%! And they aim to get that lower. Well worth the look into! Dan
7.
Personally, I think if you haven't got a looper then it's probably not a great idea to go and try to inspire other bassists with equipment you aren't entirely familiar/comfortable with, in an environment you aren't used to. It probably won't help you to project any confidence if you're worrying/unsure about the looper. I also think, as a bassist, if i was going to a clinic it would be really refreshing and great to see the player concentrating on groove and explaining methods of how to lock-in with and/or play against a drummer. Maybe something like the Victor Wooten prosessions would be a good route to take? There are some great concepts and approaches in that. Maybe you could give similar tips but focus on how to play effectively with other musicians live? A much more valuable and interesting topic for a clinic IMO. Just an idea
Excellent video! Really enjoyed that! Good point on the groove element. But seeing as the clinic is about a particular piece of equipment, I'd second what sliddix reckons. Get a drummer to go in with you, work out pieces together, nothing sets a better example than hearing and learning it in the context of a band. Let us know what happens. Dan
8. Do it!!! You'll have so much fun playing it live to! Don't worry about mistakes, I make them all the time. Mistakes give a clean track character! Just an added opinion, don't over do the vibrato. Dan
9.
Cheers for all the responses. I may have an opportunity in the summer holidays which I think I'll take. Pietruska I would like to hear about your experience as it sounds like I am doing something similar.
Not a problem. As Soliloquy has said, it leads to other work. Thats pretty much why we're doing it, we'd rather play the hotels in China and such and it looks like we have some work over there to. They're better pay and you're better looked after from the sounds of things. ie Instead of 2 of you sharing a 2 birth cabin, its a 5* Room each. But you have to start somewhere. Which ferry are you going to be working? Dan
10. Iv heard of the drinking thing alot! Our contract states that we are not allowed to drink any alcohol at all on board. Nor are we allowed to get drunk when ported and get back on the ship, if we do we get left at the port to make our own way home! Its not a problem for me as I don't drink really. Do it, itll be fun! Dan
11.
Ahem...
Theres some amazing basses on there! Thats it I'm selling my fretted!! Who needs frets when you have the 'less. Dan
12. That is a very nice bass you'v got hold of there! Welcome to the dark side! Keep us informed, I'd love to know how you get on. I can see this escalating into a 'post your fretless up' thread! Sorry, couldn't resist! Dan
13.
Has anyone ever worked on one? Did you have a positive experience? What kind of music did you play? What skills do you require? i.e sight reading How often did you work? Did it pay well?
Im am about to start on one for P&O in june for 5 weeks (a trial period as we've never done this before). Our stuff is straight out rock/pop/soul in a 3 piece. As they're taking on a band we won't be doing any sight reading (thankfully!) and we're not very good at it. As far as I know we'll be playing 7 nights a week with the days to our selves. We get fed, accommodation, PA on board with full back line. and of course pay as well. I can keep you informed if you'd like. Dan
14. B5! You've done it again! That sounds mint. Im going to have to look into them some more. The funky bizzatches here may want to join his group HipHop/Dub/Reggae group on fb. I'v always liked what you post on there B5. Good find and thanks for sharing! Dan
15. The Doc's are very good for a small budget. I invested in some ACS ER15's, never looked back and paid them off in a couple of gigs. Well worth the look into. Dan
16.
Don't worry about lines or about how 'hard' it is to play a fretless. Its not that hard and you can use it for anything you can use a fretted for. I have used mine for everything for 25 years without any issues or complaints from other musicians. Intonation takes a bit of work and attention but we are talking hours not years.
Yep, +1. Except the 25 years bit being only 27! What I found rather helpful was to play the fretted 'blind', this should help your muscle memory and make the transition easier and more importantly, enjoyable! I bought my fretless from here, and never looked back, I love it. I use it in the club band and solely in my rock originals to. Take the plunge! You'll love it! Dan
17. Are these apple ones? Ill be getting an iTouch 4G very soon so anything bass related I'm sure will be fun and useful! Dan
18.
If you want a Big Muff have a look at the Bass specific model. It's a good pedal...much better than the Boss if you ask me.
Good call. Excellent pedal these. Dan
19.
You get Custom Shop Fenders costing around that much, I'd rather pay £2000 for an Ibanez than a Fender.
Yes! This +Alan's number!! I honestly don't mind Ibanez's. Or is that Ibani'? We're spoilt for choice and for me (just my opinion) Fender's aren't that imaginative. Theres better on the market which have followed from what Fender started. Dan
20. Do it!! Spend the evidence! Dan
21. Interesting read on peoples opinions on MB gear. Im going to go against the current here, I don't like the heads but love the cabs! I'v never managed to get a nice sound out of the heads, nothing warm enough that makes me grin! They sound too thin for me. But the cabs, I love, fantastic sound with my AG 500 SC plugged in. I'v never found any MB product to be boomy or undefined, I'm quite surprised to read that. Every gig I'v played, I'v been approached and been told it sounds great, tremendous lows with excellent growl and definition. Then again, I don't like Aguilar cabs for the same reason, they seem to be too thin sounding with me playing it, even with my 500 SC plugged in. It results in me telling bass players who want a new rig when they ask me; 'Listen to your ears'. Dan
22. Not odd in the slightest! If it helps, I rest my thumb on the neck side of the pick up. Sometimes I rest it against the body of the bass. If it works, why change it! Dan
23.
There are a few threads around this subject. Personally I use Musicguard but have never made a claim. I can spread payments via monthly direct debit which helps though
Big +1 on Musicguard. I have always used them, never needed to make a claim either. My gear is covered in the house, at rehearsal rooms, studios, venues and the car (covered up) for up to 72 hours, except the house of course! Im covered for damage, theft, break down and have an option on hire replacement. A big plus that came in handy when playing a Hilton was that I have personal public liability of £1m which is part of the insurance. You don't need proof of purchase either to insure, just serial numbers. though I'm not sure about claims. I hope not, my bass is 10 years old this summer! Give them a shot, you can get a free quote in seconds to; http://www.musicguard.co.uk/home.asp Dan
24.
Not quite.... Apparently he got an audition but never went after finding out about Zappas anti drug policy.
Thats right. I stand corrected! Dan
25.
Thanks guys. I'm going to clean up my bass over the next few months and get out there and see what happens. Hopefully when I get a job and some income things will get better. By the way, age wouldn't be a matter would it? I'm actually quite young, only 18. I don't think I've ever seen Ska/Reggae bands in their teens. Most teenage bands I see are punk, rock or metal. I don't have a problem with that, but it doesn't really interest me. I often jokingly say to myself John Frusciante was in the Red Hot Chili Peppers when he was 18, what am I doing with my life!?
Age shouldn't matter really, I was in a club band when I was 18! John Frusciante was in the chilis at 17 I heard, and turned down a job in the Frank Zappa band at 15. I was in a ska band a few years ago and the drummer hadn't got his GCSE's! So keep looking! Dan
