  1. I especially find many British headstock designs rather dull, somehow. Guys like Overwater, Status, Eggle... Very similar in design, just a generic and bland shape. Could just as well have been a cheap Stagg or whatever. I like a headstock to be instantly recognizable by its shape or other features. Not something entirely featureless like this: Surely they could have thought up something better to match their well thought-out bodyshapes? And then there's gems like that D. Lakin headstock on the previous page, or this:
  2. That Precision with black binding and dots looks really nice! I like the Jazz too, but that Precision really is something unusual!
  3. I'm most comfortable on Jazz style nut width, but I play any neck type. I have big hands, so I'm fine with either. String spacing at the bridge is a more important factor for me than at the nut. I play all kinds of basses with all kinds of spacings. I have 5-strings with 16.5 mm and 19 mm spacing at the bridge, and 4-strings with 19 mm and 20 mm spacing, and all kinds of nut widths and neck profiles. My '81 Ibanez Musician and Roadster have very wide necks (1 11/16", roughly 42-43 mm) and I get along comfortably on them, but I also play a '75 Jazz Bass reissue which is 1.5".
  4. Indeed! And the 70s model has an alder body, unlike most PB57 and PB62 models which have basswood bodies. Very nice.

Lovely! I've been looking at lefties once or twice and played a lovely 5-string Passion, but I can't get over the looks of that big angled Kahler bridge (they installed righty angled bridges on many a lefty bass throughout the years ). I've seen some exceptions with monorails and Schallers, but most looked like this:
  6. Either Roger Waters' The Wall show in the Gelredome in 2011, or Rage Against the Machine on the Pinkpop festival in 2008. Both were magical experiences that I would gladly experience all over I'm 34, so I wasn't around when The Wall was released but I grew up going through my dad's record collection all the time. I've had a CD player since I was 12, and a record player since shortly after, and Pink Floyd has always amazed me. I unfortunately never got to see Floyd live, so this was the next best thing. Still doubting if I should buy tickets to the new tour as well. And Rage Against the Machine was magical in its own way too. Such brutal, raw energy! It was as if they'd never split, I've never experienced a gig so intense before or after. And I've never come home from any other gig with such a stiff and sore neck and throat One of the original Wall shows by Pink Floyd themselves would be even better!
  7. Nice! I've had two of these in the past, and I loved them. Solid, dependable workhorse with great tones and a very comfortable player, despite the 35" scale. I'm thinning down myself, but I would like to own one again at some point. An amber one like yours was my first proper bass (after a very crappy Japanese Condor Jazz Bass knockoff).
  8. Good call! Hadn't thought of that.
  9. That would be Blackwood Tek, processed wood (basically impregnated with resin and pigments and hot-pressed to a more compact form with higher density). Here's the website of a large supplier that explains it: http://www.madinter.com/blackwood-tek.html?___from_store=fr&___store=en
  10. Gibson has been using baked maple disguised as rosewood for a couple of years, a couple of years ago (they switched back to rosewood on most models). This was before CITES, and had more to do with their issues with the FBI after their wood stocks were raided and they couldn't use many of their usual tonewoods. https://blog.andertons.co.uk/guitars/gibson-baked-maple-fingerboard-guide
  11. I went for the Unitune clip because it costs just over half of a Polytune clip, and mine switches to the right side up almost instantly. I've only had it for two weeks, but so far I like it a lot!
  12. I like the look of that SG II. Is it just me though, or does that nut look really narrow compared to your SG to the left? I don't recognize that one btw, the mix of a gloss finish, dot inlays and chrome covered pickups has me wondering. Is it a modded Special, or maybe an Xtra Slim?
  13. We'll be seeing a lot more of those metalplated steampunk guitars methinks
  14. Not a recent picture (I believe this was either 2008 or 2009) but this is me with my Longbow bass. The one to the right is my old one and is a righty shortscale (30") which I sold to the guy holding it, the one to the left is a 32" lefty which I still have. This was at a meeting / bass bash of a Dutch bass players forum. The awkward fellow with the notepad is actually a local journalist, and this picture made it into the local newspaper They're fun instruments, and surprisingly well-made, with recessed monorail bridges, individual stacked humbucker per string, bone nut, OK-ish tuners and with the stock flatwound strings they sound very close to an upright. Otherwise they're little more than a square maple table leg
  15. I'm a big Warwick fan, but I'm not particularly fond of the Corvette bodyshape. I love Streamers, Thumbs and Dolphins though! And I generally dislike anything pointy (with the exception of some more classic shapes like the many Gibsons, Ibanez Iceman and Destroyer and the likes). Anything by BC Rich except for the Eagle and Mockingbird. I also really dislike any shape that should be curvy and round, but was given the flat top treatment like this: Looks very uncomfortable, and it's not half as sexy as traditional Jazz Bass curves with contoured edges IMHO. I know it's supposed to be a visual upgrade, but to me it just looks cheap and unattractive.
  16. No experience with E-series Fenders, but I have an E-series Squier Strat that has been my go-to guitar for the past 10 years! I modded it a fair bit (DiMarzio pickups, locking Schaller tuners, upgraded electronics, graphite nut and string tree) and I absolutely love it. I also have a '91 Silver Series Strat, which is a good bit lighter and more resonant, but I just keep on picking up that E-series Strat every time!
