??? Why wouldn't it be?
I thought it polite to ask.
Duck thought so. So seemingly did a bunch of other musicians and producers on both studio dates. Plus, it sounds absolutely fine as a note choice within a great groove. I reckon that means it's appropriate.
Absolutely. But it doesn't sound fine as note choice to me, so I thought I'd open it up to see what other people think. And I think it's continuing to be an interesting discussion. Is that OK with you?
What a load of rowlocks this thread is! Does it matter? Listen to the music, forget the bl**dy theory and remember how many of these records were listened to, sold and enjoyed over the years...
Lighten up, man. It's just a bit of discussion. And believe me, I'm the last person to get hung up on the theory :-)
That was a pre first cup of tea post. Sorry.
No problem - I'm always happy to be corrected :-)
Being pedantic. . . . at the time we called it Soul Music. R&B was a totally different thing.
Fair cop.
Yes, but that doesn't mean the latter opinion is either informed or viable. I can understand if folks think the post sounded harsh - but there's a bigger musical world out there happily containing and accepting much more colour and dissonance than, as NeilP said, the very slight dissonance Duck laid down on this track.
Thanks for the advice, but I’m familiar with harshness, colour and dissonance. I’m questioning whether this instance is appropriate in an r’n’b classic :-D
It's fine by me. Ever so slightly dissonant, but I suspect that;s deliberate to emphasise the key change. I your ears really can't tolerate that level of dissonance, I suggest you stick to Stock, Aitken and Waterman. It's the spice that makes music, IMHO
That's canny insulting, TBH. One man's 'dissonant' is another man's 'What the heck did he play that for?'
-
Yup, it sounds 'wrong' to me also - but hey - is this really important?
Not really. But I'm intrigued that it seems to be a deliberate note choice, rather than a flub.
There's zero issue with playing a major 6th over a minor chord. It's absolutely normal. Lots more minor scales out there than Natural Minor/Aeolian ;-)
Gah.. it sounds so wishy-washy to my ears. I actually think he should have pedaled the root on the middle eight. It would have sounded so much better, and maybe the song might have been more of a commercial success.
Duck Dunn just about rescues crashing into the first chorus on Sam and Dave's Soul Man. If the groove was good then the mistakes stayed. Time and tape was expensive back then and most bass lines "disappeared" when you played the record on your Dansette or listened to it on the car radio.
Absolutely.. it's intriguing he kept it for the BB2000 recording, though. He must have been pretty convinced by it.
If it's the note I think it is, doesn't he repeat it again afterwards? Still sounds fine to me though.
He does - it sounds wrong both times to me. ha ha.
Was Phil Spector not brought in at the last minute to "Save" the recordings from those sessions? I believe he put all the strings and suchlike on after the band sessions were over. Lennon, for one, was less than happy with the finished album because of all the add ons. They had, to all intents, split by then anyway so I doubt they were particularly bothered.
Nah, it was McCartney who objected, and tried to block its release. That why let It Be... Naked came along later.
Is this at exactly 1m10s?
No - 1m22s. I suggested listening from a bit earlier to get some context.
-
I hear it- the 'sixth' step of the first chord of the mid 8 is played major, but 'ought' to be minor, right? Or to put it more simply, the highest note of the phrase on that chord should be a semi-tone lower. I'm saying this without a bass in my hands to check, but that's how it sounds to me.
^^^ exactly!
-
Ahh.. it's jarring to me. I've just checked and he does it on the original, too. It must just be me..
-
If you want a bass line where the player is unsure of the chords and hits repeatedly bum notes, have a listen to The Beatles' 'Long & Winding Road.'
*shudder*
-
Listen to this from about 1m10s. When it shifts into the middle eight, it goes minor, but Duck cracks on with the usual line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGbj4u-6c0A Whaddya fink? Of course it's Duck, so I'm happy to accept that he's right, and everyone else is wrong :-)

Sounds OK to me..?

1972 Telecaster Bass with original case
wateroftyne replied to yorks5stringer's topic in Bass Guitars
Those HB Teles are - IMO - pretty terrible, tonally. Whether the bridge pup is enough to rescue it is something you'll have to find out for yourself... -
I'd play / buy one happily and just call it a limelight , my questions more along the lines of aren't Limelight risking a lawsuit or do they have this covered somehow ?
I guess they are, but I also assume they know how to stay above the water.
-
I imagine people play them, like them, and when they're asked about it take mischievous pride in saying 'It's not actually a real Fender...' Some people out there might not agree with the principle, but that's between them and their wallet.
Nobody mention the Accugroove debacle regarding the TRI210L..
Yeah... no doubt this is a different thing entirely, but any future attempt at this was bound to be tarnished by the stench of the Accuswitch.
-
Beautiful! But yeah, with that board & logo, it’s more early 70s than ‘62 :-)
Really? You've not mentioned it
Oh, you hadn't heard? In that case I shall endeavour to mention it more...
I seem to recall molan (of this parish) remarking that the TH500 used the same Class D power stage as the allegedly 900W Streamliner!
The modules in pretty much all these amps are much of a muchness, just with tweaks here and there. I realised I didn't like the core behaviour, so I bailed on them a while ago.
