what strings do you use for your yamaha bb1024/5 and why?
uncle psychosis replied to fishfry's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a BB414, so obviously its a bit lower-end but I use GHS Pressurewounds on it. I especially like the feel of the pressurewounds but they're also very versatile. -
Delays in receiving items shipped from Thoman
I've always had good service from them, but stuff I ordered on the 4th Jan didn't get processed until 8th, and only got delivered yesterday (14th). I guess it's still only 10 days or 7 working days, but when you're used to it being a lot slicker,
They never process anything on Sundays (ie the 4th) and the 6th of January is a public holiday in much of Germany. They may well have also closed on the fifth. Less than 7 working days for delivery from Germany, just after Christmas, in the same period that there's been a major terrrorist attack in continental Europe, is fairly impressive in my eyes. In the last month I had at least three parcels sent to me from within the UK that took over three weeks to arrive. Christmas in the era of the internet puts incredible strain on delivery services. -

Basschat member 51mon is something of a Compression expert and wrote this excellent guide a while ago: http://web.archive.org/web/20130215154741/http://blog.basschat.co.uk/setting-up-a-compressor/

Love it. Good work.
Hope this helps.....
Thanks, I'll give it a go. I suspect if I ever really feel the need for compression I'll end up buying an MXR Bass Compressor anyway. The metering and detailed controls look ideal.

What is it? A case for the tinker box thing? -
Errrr, nope, cant do it without talking in terms of ratio vs threshold. You are better off reading up the Compression 101 link I posted?
That guide is fantastic, thanks for putting it together. Any tips for setting up a compressor as you recommend (very low ratio) when metering isn't available? Cheers

Learning songs, I'm struggling a bit here.
If you're reading off a sheet you aren't in the moment of communicating music with other humans.
That's the London Symphony Orchestra f**ked then. -
Shops have to pay VAT and other niceties when dealing with second hand gear. I had a long discussion about this with someone who sells second hand gear and the numbers are terrifying. They don't offer peanuts because they're screwing you, they offer peanuts because it's the only way to make any profit. Subtract VAT, overheads, and a small profit margin (5% ain't gonna cut it ) off what an item is "worth" second hand, that's what a shop can pay you.

Spectacularly ugly. I'm sure it's a great bass but... Geezo. Fugly.

Anyone used ali express to buy a bass?
uncle psychosis replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
Several guys on a guitar forum I frequent have done it. They were placed with the results, but said that is basically only worth it if you're ordering something that you couldn't otherwise get - custom colour, unusual guitar, etc. If what you want is already available off the shelf here then that's probably wiser. -

As someone who works in engineering, I've always wondered what the engineers who work on these things think. It must be strange. -
How on earth do you play in a Ska / Reggae style?
uncle psychosis replied to a topic in General Discussion
You can barely discern the pitch of the notes because of how bassy the EQing is but I absolutely love this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7pxHI7tL4A -

You have to listen really carefully to the note length and emphasis. Lots of reggae sounds really simple note wise but nailing it is really hard. Listen to as much as you can. My favourite two reggae albums are "Marcus Garvey" by burning spear and "best dressed chicken in town" by Dr alimintado. -
So what happens if you make a bitsa using a genuine fender neck sourced from a genuine fender instrument, but fitted to a body of unknown origin with aftermarket hardware, are you then obliged to scrape off the fender decal and remove the production date stamps etc?
This is where it gets cloudy. Production date stamps are not an issue (unless they're trademarked?). Using official Fender parts in a bitsa is complex. My understanding is that so long as you describe it as "a guitar made from Fender parts" and not a "Fender guitar" then its OK. Fender are the ones who put their trademark on that neck, so its allowed to be there. You may (but I may be wrong) also be obliged to not show photos of the trademark (ie headstock) in any sale (I remember there was some suggestion that selling Ricky copies on basschat would be OK so long as the trademarked bit (the headstock) was not shown). Of course a lot of this is just legal pedantry and Fender clearly aren't too bothered about individuals doing this. I definitely think its wrong for small builders to do it though---if you take money for it you shouldn't be using another companies trademark.

Personally I don't really understand why quite so many people are so desperate to put the Fender logo on instruments that, well, aren't. Even one of those "fender-alike" logos that use the same font but say whatever you want them to say makes more sense to me.

I fixed a pedalboard with an identical problem using a self-adhesive carpet tile that I bought in the poundshop
Why does it matter then if people apply their own decals? What's the issue? If someone pays £1000 of there own money for something they value at £1000 then that's their choice? You keep using the word counterfeit, but none of these basses are actual counterfeit? 99% of the time people who sell the basses on are very true and state it's a parts build or a "bitsa" you get the few who don't own up to things, but very few do that and they're usually weeded out.
If you put build a "bitsa" bass and put a Fender logo on it then the problem is that its technically illegal. You're breaking the law if you try to sell it, regardless of whether or not you're open about what it is. The guy selling it now might be honest about what it is, but the next guy might not be, which is why disclosure doesn't affect the legality. I've C&P'd this from elsewhere, but Trading Standards are quite clear about this: 1. Using a logo/trademark that doesn't belong to you is illegal unless you have permission or a license to use it 2. Using a disclaimer ("this is not a real Fender") is not a legal defence in Trade Mark / Copyright law 3. Counterfeit goods (like Bitsa basses with Fender logos) cannot be legitimately sold, even with a disclaimer. Now, personally I don't really care if someone wants to build themselves a bitsa, thats fine by me. But the law is what it is. Again, more C&P: Fender sell replacement necks with logos to be fitted only to Fender guitars. Warmoth (and others) sell licensed (non-logo) Fender style necks which can be put on anything you want. It is the addition of the Fender logo on a guitar that was not made by Fender that puts you on shaky legal ground. Adding a Fender logo to your homebrew bitsa is probably fine for your own personal use, but selling it becomes dodgy.

early eighties recording quality...
uncle psychosis replied to notable9's topic in General Discussion
So much nonsense, pseudo science and frankly outright lies are told about digital audio. Britain's physics teachers need to up their game! Modern recordings don't sound bad because of technology, they sound bad because of the way they've been deliberately mixed and mastered. Don't blame technology, blame studio engineers. -
"pro" is an almost entirely meaningless phrase/word. The only definition that really makes sense is "someone who gets paid" although "Having a professional attitude" often seems to get shortened to "pro". I think lots of musicians are under the impression that there's some kind of mythical set of rules or skills that separate the "pro" from everyone else, but reality doesn't really work like that.

I don't like either on bass. I'm constantly surprised by just how many people on here seem to use them.
