Funnily enough I was talking to dawn not too long ago about what would happen to status when Rob inevitably takes a back seat and would there be an ex apprentice like Paul of wal to pick up the baton,…. She went pretty quiet with that suggestion which was very unlike her, normally she can talk all day and now I know why.… status as a business could keep on going if there was somebody else ready to step in.

sting needs a mention...he wasn't the virtuoso bass player as such but what he does is spot on for the track every time.

love his string punch style on kinky afro...without that this track would be nothing.

yes ..a wal mk2 is another one of my basses that i haven't seen in years ...locked up in a room in south east asia ... its probably now a race between me and the termites....can termites chew their way through a wal case??? i hope not.

i have one of these locked up in a room in se asia...havent seen it in years ...hope its still there(could be eaten by termites)...neck played like butter ...geddy thinks so too. i remember buying it in hong kong for top dollar ...it was literally the only ready way into fretless at the time if you were stuck in that part of the world before internet sales became a thing.

i bought a black ray brand new in the uk during the 90s and immediately took it to south east asia....with all that high humidity around the backplate split and the poly paint got all cracked up and started falling off, a guitar tech said it has mojo. Plays just as good as the day I first got it....but looks like shite.

played a musicmaster for years ...it was a 78 Olympic white, it was my first bass. I remember the strings always sounding incredibly whumpy for want of a better word ....i play a status graphite now, standard D ...as far removed from that first bass as i can possibly get. Amazed that little fender is now held in such high regard...perhaps I was a little hasty to have sold it.

when i think of a bass solo my mind immediately conjures up ric gretch's (bass noodle) performance in the Blind Faith track Do what You Like.... now i'm not holding this up as any jaw dropping performance but it is pretty cool in the the context of things and somehow it must have been a little nerve wracking to be sandwiched between clapton and baker, i guess the order of the day was do whatever you like as long as it didn't sound like jack bruce.

from what i can gather these slots by depp were pre arranged prior to any trial so he was just honouring his commitments ....and depp considers himself primarily a musician who does acting to pay the bills ...but yeah don't give up the day job johnny....he's ok but not great, it's like he thinks he's keith richards or something.

Used to see quite a bit of hawkwind including nick turner and Robert Calvert…for me their pinnacle was the levitation tour with ginger baker at the hammy odeon, and then it was sonic attack at the same venue with Michael moorcock , maybe next was at Glastonbury with Lemmy who also showed up at the crystal palace bowl, after that they seemed to go slowly downhill in budget, I did see the black sword tour at the Walthamstow assembly halls …maybe the last time was down in Truro, ….still amazed that Dave Brock was mates with Eric Clapton on the same busking circuit in the 60s.

These two bands are quite different which will colour my choice significantly ….one is balls to the wall essential rock and the other is meh …. So no guesses as to which bass player gets my vote.

Pino plays exactly what the song requires …that’s why he can charge top rate for what’ can be a fairly straightforward bass line, also pino often offloads his surplus basses via the bass gallery and from what I can tell the quality of those basses is top notch which makes me wonder how good are the ones he hangs onto.

Just got this pedal, …it seems to be a one trick pony but it’s a good trick, just makes everything sound better. For me it doesn’t readily overdrive rather than just give it a bit of tube breakup which is just perfect. It’s one of those pedals that you need to turn on and off to fully appreciate what it’s doing. I’m pairing it with a cali76 which I think could be the end of my quest for better tone….for the foreseeable future anyway.

Wow.. it’s a shame because the quality bar a few exceptions is second to none, just needs to be a bit more humble when things inevitably do go wrong.

Everything in status is handmade … so if you get the trainees first proper attempt things might go a little pearshaped….just send it out and hope it’s accepted. I have also seen shoddy work come out of wal from their trainee who ironically is now their main man. the net is full of perfectly fine secondhand status necks so your experience is probably a rare exception although I have also witnessed fraying edges on their fret boards… but this is where the first owner (unpaid final inspection checker) needs to send it back but rarely ever does if it’s just cosmetic…. You might even be advised to remove any finger rings upon raising the issue which is basically code for wear and tear which then takes us into the one word against another scenario…lol. I don’t think I can remember a brand new bass that didn’t have one or two minor flaws.. Surface chipped edges status can easily fix.

Annoying right?…. And if you came earlier this is what you could have! Bass direct are just as guilty.
