1. Reading between the lines the fluctuation is a one off, between posting and arriving? If that is the case then maybe the bass has received a good wallop of the sort that won't harm the protected bass itself but something delicate and susceptible inside like wiring or a joint? A bit Deja Vu Chris too with your amp I'd say trust the diagnosis as you don't have much option, agree on a settlement and put it down to experience.
2.
Don't get your hopes up to high for the "proper" pictures to be much better. It is a matter of record that I am crap with a camera.
You really aren't 'crap' Alan, it's just that some other folk are a bit better and have more time on their hands because they aren't/can't make such beautiful instruments. Don't change anything
3. I just found this thread and it's doing nothing for my love of Alembic combined with the finances of a student. It is a true work of art. Bump.
4. Go on Joe, take a trip, you know you want to It does look rather nice.
5. That's a beauty Jim, good luck with the sale.
6. I suppose the use of space, dynamics, timing and ghost notes, hammer ons and pull offs are all things to add to flavour the sauce. There's more variations out there methinks than you could ever use. Not to mention slapping (I told you not to mention slapping!). All the best with it, it's a constant learning curve.
7.
Help! All my basslines are starting to sound too similar! How can I break out of the arpeggiated fill style and become more creative?
Inversions or Modes of any help? I'm getting to a similar place and inversions seem to be a way out at the moment. Fun isn't it, and sooo much better than free time that's overrated imo
8. Bloody brilliant, looking forward to the phots
9. That would be marvellous
10. I'm a bass fan and don't really want to get into a pointless 4 vs more argument. I am aware that as my bass playing improves my ability to pick up and play a 5 has too which is a nice bonus
11. Whereabouts r u Lozbass? I have an ACG pre or 2 you could try and I'd love to see that Alembic. Peter - in not so sunny Kendal
12. Solvol Autosol is good but take care not to overdo it as it can remove the chrome over time. A milder alternaltive is toothpaste, and it smells better. Can't hurt to give it a try. Cheap toothpaste (an abrasive) is best. Peter
13. Been a closet Alembic fan for many years and that is quite something. Much nicer than the Fodera imo
14.
I'd put it back in its case for a month, then take it out and see what you think when you've had a bit of distance. I've chopped and changed a lot and then ended up back where I started. I've also had a break from basses the tone of which I wasn't too pleased with, then been blown away a few months later. Just an idea, but maybe save the money for now and see how you feel after a short hiatus. If however, you're not happy if you're not spending money (I'm a big offender), then go ahead - you shouldn't really go too far wrong with Nordys and, personally, I'd risk the solder breaks
That's probably very good advice. The Nordy I put in my Sterling was immense!
15. If you chipped your nuts on your Status perhaps you're holding it all wrong?
16.
mate i gotta ask as a siplmpleton what does GAS mean?????!!!!! ziggy/john
Gear Aquisition Syndrome
17.
It seems that song was first released in late '79, which explains a lot... Alex
The most I've laughed in a long while!
18.
I think this is the one:
That's the baby Warmoth 54P with a birdseye maple neck. Korina body tung oiled and neck Tru-oiled with a D tuner on Hipshot Ultralites and a Gotoh 201 bridge. Presently strung with D'Addario's. ACG02 with one Low Pass and one High Pass filter and a volume. Alan (of ACG) helped me by doing the routing and providing me with a neat macassar ebony surround plate for the Dark Star. It's a real workhorse and thanks go to Alan.
19. THAT is very expensive agreed but not all WD stuff is so bad. There's times when WD is a godsend. Service is good too. Allparts and Axes R Us are worth a look.
20.
I think the only reason that prices have come down in the UK is down to Thomann when they started the website around 02/03 they where too cheap.Never had any problem with them and there after sales is great too.
I think the exchange rate may have had an influence too i.e. Thomann prices have shot up.
21. I find that there's time the open E doesn't sound as good as the fretted one. One or two songs we play are simplified by using the B string and it seems to offer more options for improvisation too.
22.
such is the nature of a decent well set up 5 string.....
I don't think it's the bass, more me. I've owned may decent well set up 5 string basses. In fact none of my 5 stringers have been anything but... Peter
23.
Word of warning, my experience with Thomann was GREAT until something went wrong. At that point, I cannot begin to tell you the amount of grief it was. If it's a cab? Who cares, you're unlikely to have that much of an issue. If it's an amp I would think VERY carefully before buying from there....
I'd have to say the polar opposite here. The best after sales service I've ever experienced by far. Am I the only one? I returned my Yamaha BBT Amp when it was more than a year old. Excellent communication, pickup and delivery. I've had a few things break, mainly minor PSU type stuff and the story has always been the same - German efficiency, communication and politeness. Don't get me wrong I'd rather buy locally with folk like the BM or Bass Direct but there was a time/exchange rate when Thomann were a no brainer.
24. Not a bad song I suppose bit a bit weak in places too imo. Ferchrissake I'm 10 yrs older and all this
*Feeling:- Alien concept to anyone who listens to (or plays) jazz, or anything written after 1976,
is utter nonsense You sound like our lead guitarist with the 1976 bit and he's a complete plonker Wake up, stop living in the past (while continuing to celebrate it) and start embracing the now.
