Aha, a used ACG There's not too many of those around and I'd love to know which one. Peter

Isn't it strange how things go? I love the Kinal, it's made me appreciate 5 string basses and wish that I'd never sold my 5 string Harlot. Still that was then and now is now. Russ has been in touch. He's missing his Kinal and reading between the lines I think he wishes he'd never parted with it. A part of me misses the MM IV too. So the Kinal is returning home having been much appreciated for a couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to being re-acquainted with the MM too. I've been looking at trades to re-introduce a 5 string into my armoury. I may have a lead. Funny old World isn't it.

This is a bit of a shot in the dark I know. Basically I've been playing a 5 string Kinal for the past couple of weeks and love it to bits. I traded it with a great BCer for a Marcus Miller IV fitted with a Sadowsky pre as he was looking for a MM. Well, he's missing the Kinal and I'm missing the MM too so as mad as it seems we are reversing our deal. I realise that I need a 5 string bass without any doubt - it's explained here I think: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...3&hl=string So I have a number of basses I'm willing to consider trading for the right 5 string. I have quite a few basses too so it may be that more than one of these may float your boat in a trade for a high end 5er. An ACG would be a definite high interest 5 string. Here's my possible trades, all 4 stringers obviously: Rickenbacker CS4001 in mint condition with silver Tolex case etc, a real beauty that I'd value well over £2k. 1990 Warwick Thumb NT in really good condition, what can I say except if Warwick means clubby necks to you, think again. Balances perfectly too. Value £800 Mint, virtually new G&L L2000 Tribute in natural, value £350. That's it, 3 x 4 stringers in any combination offered as a trade for a 5 string. High end considered but give me a pm and we can see. Peter
Taken about 2am Sunday morning at JB Jazz & Blues Club near Oldham..
You are so much more Blues than you are Soul Alan The singer spookily reminds me of an old sort of friend who sang the blues in Plymouth, Mick Taylor, sadly no longer with us. -

Okay here's me at my 1st ever gig, 12 day's before my 55th! Sound checking - sans hat Gig: There's actually a video out there too but I'm not sure you'd be ready for that -
It sounds like one heck of a bass. I just think about the fact that previously the extremely versatile 4 EQ was only available in the Bongo, which I personally like, (but many don't) and then they produce this incredible sounding, very versatile and very 'different' package electronically in yet another 'unconventional' shape. I'm normally very tolerant of bass shapes perceived by many as more unconventional. My personal jury is still out on the Big Al. I do know that if it was more Sterling-esque for example I'd be more enthusiastic, perhaps that says it all.
Is it really that controversial a shape?
Going from the response in previous threads, it would appear so. Personally I'm not so sure yet.

Yet again MM seem to be putting a great package into a controversial body shape

Good to hear you're back at the bass malarkey Mike

Hiya Mike, long time no see. How is life?

I just start with my thump on the pickup and then floating anchor it down each string as I play. It seems to work and a change in tone is my hint that I've moved forward. Strangely I learnt to play over the neck pup and for a while found I gravitated there when playing. Now it's the opposite and I keep finding myself going to the burpy end
-
If you like the way it looks put it on. Play it and if you can play it okay leave it on. Personally I think it looks better with, and it might stop folk using the bass as a chess board

PUP working fine one minute but needs rewinding the next?

Reading between the lines the fluctuation is a one off, between posting and arriving? If that is the case then maybe the bass has received a good wallop of the sort that won't harm the protected bass itself but something delicate and susceptible inside like wiring or a joint? A bit Deja Vu Chris too with your amp I'd say trust the diagnosis as you don't have much option, agree on a settlement and put it down to experience. -
Don't get your hopes up to high for the "proper" pictures to be much better. It is a matter of record that I am crap with a camera.
You really aren't 'crap' Alan, it's just that some other folk are a bit better and have more time on their hands because they aren't/can't make such beautiful instruments. Don't change anything

I suppose the use of space, dynamics, timing and ghost notes, hammer ons and pull offs are all things to add to flavour the sauce. There's more variations out there methinks than you could ever use. Not to mention slapping (I told you not to mention slapping!). All the best with it, it's a constant learning curve.
Help! All my basslines are starting to sound too similar! How can I break out of the arpeggiated fill style and become more creative?
Inversions or Modes of any help? I'm getting to a similar place and inversions seem to be a way out at the moment. Fun isn't it, and sooo much better than free time that's overrated imo
