It seems that song was first released in late '79, which explains a lot... Alex
The most I've laughed in a long while!
I think this is the one:
That's the baby Warmoth 54P with a birdseye maple neck. Korina body tung oiled and neck Tru-oiled with a D tuner on Hipshot Ultralites and a Gotoh 201 bridge. Presently strung with D'Addario's. ACG02 with one Low Pass and one High Pass filter and a volume. Alan (of ACG) helped me by doing the routing and providing me with a neat macassar ebony surround plate for the Dark Star. It's a real workhorse and thanks go to Alan.

THAT is very expensive agreed but not all WD stuff is so bad. There's times when WD is a godsend. Service is good too. Allparts and Axes R Us are worth a look.
I think the only reason that prices have come down in the UK is down to Thomann when they started the website around 02/03 they where too cheap.Never had any problem with them and there after sales is great too.
I think the exchange rate may have had an influence too i.e. Thomann prices have shot up.

I find that there's time the open E doesn't sound as good as the fretted one. One or two songs we play are simplified by using the B string and it seems to offer more options for improvisation too.
such is the nature of a decent well set up 5 string.....
I don't think it's the bass, more me. I've owned may decent well set up 5 string basses. In fact none of my 5 stringers have been anything but... Peter
Word of warning, my experience with Thomann was GREAT until something went wrong. At that point, I cannot begin to tell you the amount of grief it was. If it's a cab? Who cares, you're unlikely to have that much of an issue. If it's an amp I would think VERY carefully before buying from there....
I'd have to say the polar opposite here. The best after sales service I've ever experienced by far. Am I the only one? I returned my Yamaha BBT Amp when it was more than a year old. Excellent communication, pickup and delivery. I've had a few things break, mainly minor PSU type stuff and the story has always been the same - German efficiency, communication and politeness. Don't get me wrong I'd rather buy locally with folk like the BM or Bass Direct but there was a time/exchange rate when Thomann were a no brainer.

Not a bad song I suppose bit a bit weak in places too imo. Ferchrissake I'm 10 yrs older and all this
*Feeling:- Alien concept to anyone who listens to (or plays) jazz, or anything written after 1976,
is utter nonsense You sound like our lead guitarist with the 1976 bit and he's a complete plonker Wake up, stop living in the past (while continuing to celebrate it) and start embracing the now.

Wood and general ascetics I like but far too much bling innit. Even for this Essex boy

I've always had good service from those guys

Best preamp Pedal??? Your experiences...
I bought the M80 because its flat sound is transparent i.e. no pre curve EQ, unlike the Sansamp for instance.
Except when you push the 'colour' button without noticing, and your bass gets completely 'Lost in Space'!! -

Switching the MXR in and out with the mids boosted a little only certainly didn't drastically alter the bass's tone, it just gave it a bit more 'bite'. I believe the Aguilar has sweepable mids too. -

I have made that claim! I believe it, at least to an extent. I have found that boosting the mids helps with my particular tone and that passive basses have a deficiency of tweakability in this area. I could just use the amp of course but the pedal gives the option to switch it in and out (as does the Rebelhead). I also like the ability to add a little gentle crunch/distortion for some songs. Again, sounding like a stuck record, - Rebelhead I'd love to hear the RH 450 through a Vintage Alex -
Do you still have it Pete?

Those who know a little of my bass playing history will also know that I've owned a prodigious number of basses, 4,5 and 6 string. I really only doodled with 5 and 6 string basses and to be quite honest my 4 string playing has always been elementary my dear Watson. Since deciding that 4 strings are where I'm at and regularly practising for the past year I finally feel as if I've made some progress at last. I'm able to pick up the bass and go through the set list of about 20 songs while concentrating on the feel, dynamics and timing rather than just the fretting of the notes. I'm slowly getting the ability to improvise within the song structure a little. Basically I'm enjoying myself and confidence is high. Russ came around with his 5 string Kinal a few weeks back and very nice it is too. It's narrow spaced (17mm at the bridge) with a 35" scale. Two Aero pups mounted in ebony (kewl or what) with an ebony board and 3 band Bart circuitry with a 3 pos'n mid switch and a passive active pull on the vol knob. I'd basically aquired a natural Marcus Miller to which I'd fitted a Sadowsky pre and mightily impressed was I. Russ suggested a trade and I went for it. Why? Honestly? GAS!! I reasoned that a 5 string would be a good idea. I also love the look of the Kinal and it sounded pretty damn versatile too. The revelation is that I can pick it up and play it easily - well fairly easily. This is a real surprise. I started off playing it as a 4 + 1 string with no real orientation problems and now I'm using the E on the B string regularly and shifting my position toward the bridge for some songs. I'm really surprised.

I'd like to add that my MXR is probably surplus to requirement (Boss ME 20B too?) since buying the TC Electronics Rebelhead with the pedal and 3 memory positions. The tube simulation on the Rebelhead works well. The Rebelhead has a separate headphone amp and an MP3 input, which is precisely what I was using the Boss for. -

Having used an MXR M-80 D.I. for my passive P and Maruszczck Jazz to give that all important mid control and the switchable boost and distortion I'd strongly recommend it. The Tone Hammer was the other possibility. -
All my basses are my favourite basses. That's why I own them
Yes, warm old school sound with a wide frequency range, high output, and sensitivity to what you do with your fingers (or pick).
That is a very good description of the sound. I replaced my P pup with the Dark Star and didn't have any issue with height so they needn't cause a problem. The wide frequency range is very marked with the Low Pass filter compared to the Wizard Thumper it replaced. Peter

I don't but I will have a go. Yes that's the one Mikey

I have one fitted to my Warmoth P bass with an ACG02 pre amp. They sound very distinctively old school - brilliant imo.
