If the neo driver has been designed to sound exactly like the non-neo driver it's replacing then I doubt you could hear a difference - I know this is true for some of the new Eminence pro-audio neos. You may well prefer the white Panda to the black M5 but you'd then be disappointed if given a white M5 because you told your wealthy and generous friend you liked white cars. Your preference for the Aguilar non-neo 1x12"s over the Tech neo 6x10" can tell you only one thing - that you prefer the sound of the DB112 to the Tech neo 610. It can't tell you that you prefer ceramic magnets, nor can it tell you that you prefer 12" speakers. Just those specific speakers in those specific enclosures/configurations. It's a shame really because there's nothing like a good over-generalisation for keeping musicians happy! Alex
So should replacing a ceramic magnet driver with a neo driver (of similar spec... assuming that is possible within small tolerances) essentially mean that the tone of a given cab should remain consistent? I'm not arguing, just genuinely interested in understanding 'stuff' like this better
For direct radiator (i.e. non-horn) cabs the cab design only really affects the tone in the lows. Above ~200Hz it's all down to what the speakers sound like. The difference in tone between your neo and non-neo drivers was just the difference in tone resulting from them being different speakers - the fact that one had a neo magnet and the other a non-neo magnet is immaterial. Replace the non-neo magnet with a neo one of equal strength and the speaker would sound the same. And vice versa. It's a bit like saying that you used to have a white Fiat Panda and now have a black BMW M5 and thus you prefer black cars because they're bigger, comfier and faster than white cars. Alex
Cheers Alex. So it is safe to say that a neo driver can and will sound different to a non-neo just like any two drivers from different manufacturers can and will sound different. Your analogy of the cars being useful here in that I may well prefer driving the white Fiat panda to the black Beemer So replacing a neo driver with a non-neo driver would be like replacing any 2 drivers regardless of material... would they then sound very different as I assume no 2 speaker manufacturers drivers sound the same; or is it just that the handling characteristics are different?

I've not regretted downsizing from a 2100watt 6x10 to a pair of 300watt DB 112s. Oddly enough the 6x10 weighed less than the pair of 12s combined and was probably a lot easier to go distances as it had casters (only weighed 30kg anyway ). I think the biggest difference for me is the difference in tonality between the Neo 10s and the non-neo 12s. I'm sure someone very learned explained to me that there shouldn't be a tonal difference between neo and non-neo drivers and that it was the cab design that gave the majority of tone but I can't help thinking that I prefer the tone of non-neo drivers in general. Sorry I'm wondering off topic a bit Back on task! Unless you are playing huge stages where your backline is also your FOH sound I wouldn't worry too much about downsizing, you'd be amazed at how the right speaker/cab can compensate for the loss of all those drivers... well almost

I aim for 9lb being about as heavy as I'd like, though I own a bass that is closer to 10lb. I'd consider anything over 10lb to be heavy I've owned a bass that weighed over 12lb and though the tone was fantastic I'd not want to repeat the experience and 'yes' I will sacrifice a little bit of tone to save lugging an extra 3lb around on my shoulder at every gig.
Hi John, yep I'm depping at the Fat Ox gig on the 23rd, I hope I can do you and the lads justice! I'm looking forward to it, some of the set is the same as Diablo's, others I've played a few years back and the grey matter still has tenuous links to them, and the rest are new to me. RHCP's "By The Way" intro will be an interesting test for my fingers up the dusty end of my bass! Got it all worked out, no probs, even the odd tuning to get that very last chord but 10% of the time I get my fingers on top of each other More practice... Not this weekend, we had to cancel unfortunately for an operation at short notice - health comes first of course. We'll be back on the 9th at The Star on Westgate Rd. Great place, even though the parking/unloading is such a pain! When's your new duo gigging and what sort of material are you doing?
Hell if I can blag my way through that stuff then you'll do a sterling job... hang on maybe that's why I'm NOT doing it! Duo has progressed from Simon & Garfunkel to Green Day and Georgia Satellites
I'am a Geordie!, right about the size.
I'm sure we are talking about the same Geordie dimensions -
Nah his is only 24 frets, I think only NT Thumb's have the elusive 26th fret, that or the older NT Thumbs........ermmmmmmmmm John, please feel free to correct me!
You is correct. The NT have 26 and as has been mentioned the NT Dolphin Pro I also has 26... though who the fook uses more than 12 is beyond me
I'd be up for this assuming I'm free on whatever day you settle on. I can bring a Tech Soundsystems 2x12, Ampeg SVP-Pro, DHA Dual Rackmount, Ric 4003 (stock), Ric 4003 (w/60s pickups/electronics) and a TE T-Bass (w/Seymour Duncan Jazz and MM pickups/preamp). I'm also waiting on Dave Hall to finish off my all-valve VT5 amp (12AX7's plus an EL90 power valve) so if that comes in time I can bring that too, would be a great opportunity to put it through it's paces. Regards, Steve.
Nice one Steve. We'll arrange something during August for sure. We'll stay touch. BTW I hear you are helping the lads out and filling in for the gig I couldn't do, nice one. Are you gigging with Diablo this week/weekend? -
not so ! my better half is 5' 1" !
Ahhh but as you say she is a 'half'... were she full size and not a 'half' she'd be 10' 2" -
Cheers one and all Is anyone else using one in a similar circumstance (i.e. as a sub-mixer for a looper/mini rehearsal tool). I can see the suitability for a tutor/pupil so that you can both play through one combo but I am also intrigued by the possibility of USB out into your PC... is it then a simple process to record etc?
I've got a Behringer UB802 that's pretty good. I use it when my tutor comes to my place so that he can plug his gear into my amp save him having to lug his around. It does the job, you can plug up 6 bits of kit in, it has it's own effects loop that is individually controllable, all in all it's a nice bit of kit. There are a few Behringer mixers on EBay that are reasonaly priced too. I hope this helps you out mate?
The Behringer does appear to be coming out as a favourite but I've just got niggly doubts about reliability! Any issues with yours?
-
Cheers for that Steve. Those Behringers are cheap enough but I think I'd probably need some basic EQ. I think 4 channels would be sufficient but I'd need to be able to also need something that could accommodate different levels such as an active bass or a mic for vocals.

My present musical project involves a friend and I doing a bunch of acoustic numbers with both of us doing guitar and vocals and me playing bass as well (obviously not while playing guitar); we are also both utilising loopers (well... trying to). I'd like to get a little mini-mixer to use both for house rehearsals and for a bit of live work. This wouldn't be the main PA mixer/amp it would just be a sub mixer for me and something to use as a mixer in the house which will just run into a guitar combo. Is there anything that is good value for money and is there anything obvious that I might overlook when picking a mixer? If you are doing this yourself any insight would be useful.

I have a love/hate relationship with Warwick Thumbs (NT & BO). I love the tone and aesthetics of them and yet despite owning about 5 NTs over the years I always find that when they are strapped on the 1st fret/nut position is too far away; no problem sitting down but I feel like I need my arms to be 6" longer to comfortably play down the deep end Oddly enough I like a light bass and I've not found the Thumb to be a massively heavy bass (though for its diminutive size I suppose it could be lighter) nor have mine ever suffered from neck dive!

We are going to give this a couple of weeks so that we can get a better selection of amps and cabs together. In the meantime I'm going to experiment with sticking a vocal mic' in front of my cab and see what can be done with the minimum of equipment. I may well be picking brains for advice on uploading samples -

Recording samples of different basses/amps/cabs... pitfalls
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
Great idea Mr Hunt .. I'm sure you know this site, maybe some ideas there .. http://www.basstasters.com/ It's very good for a number of reasons: he plays exactly the same thing every time so it's easy to hear the differences, and to associate them with the thing he's changed, and he only changes one thing at a time
Yes, I've often gone onto BTers and it is great fun just blasting through some of the samples it can be illuminating and I suppose that is the kind of thing I'd like to do. I'm just not sure what the results will be like as we aren't talking studio quality here Views and tips welcome. -
A select band of us will likely as not be getting together on Wednesday night (30-07-08) and blasting a bunch of basses through various amp/cab combinations I just wondered if people would be interested in the results and maybe highlight any pitfalls. I'd basically be sticking my b/v mic (Beyer??? 15 years old but cost about £150 back then) somewhere in front of the cabs (static positioning) and doing a 'brief' digital recording (one of those little BOSS 4/32 track recorders) of each of the different combos with the bass and amp recorded flat. Obviously it's hardly scientific so I'm not asking for the top brass to come laying in with derision about room acoustics (a large music room in a school) or the fact that the basses will all be strung differently and the fact that the gain won't be identical on all amps. Any suggestions as to the best/easiest way to do this that 'might' make it interesting for other BassChatters?

OK Warwick, Fender P, Modulus Flea - into - Mesa Boogie, Thunderfunk, GK - ran through - Schroeder, Aguilar, DR cabs it is I'm wondering about the validity/feasibility of sticking an ambient mic' somewhere in front of the cabs (static positioning) and doing a 'brief' digital recording (one of those little BOSS 4/32 track recorders) of each of the different combos recorded flat... I might stick a quick thread up to see what the pitfalls will be -
IIRC Peavey did/do a cab with the same speaker config' that is Black Widow loaded... or was it an 18"! There are loads of threads about mixing your speakers and the effects that it can have, do a quick search. However, at the end of the day it's what you hear and you perceive that matters... unless you give a flying fig about your audience in which case you need to do some reading/experimenting
Hi - would have been up for it but on a show all next week. Would like a try of a TF. Fancy a change from my GK but not sure what.
Maybe next time! If you are local to the NE just PM me and I'm sure we can sort out you having a bash with the TF. We may well have DR cabs as well as the Aggies and Schroeder... nice! -
Following several communications between WoT and myself we thought we'd like to see how our 'new' cabs stack up against each other and how we remember our recently departed cabs sounding. I've got access to my workplace on Wednesday afternoon/early evening where noise isn't an issue and we can turn up the wick a bit. If there is anyone local to Blyth (NE24) and fancies bringing a cab or 2, an amp or 2 and a bass... or 2 give me a shout. If all else fails me and WoT will feedback on his Schroeder 410 and my DB12s through Thunderfunk and Mesa Boogie amps
I normally don't like Warwicks at all (sorry!), but that does look rather nice. Showing my ignorance again, how does one play a bass like that? Does one pluck two strings at once, 12-string guitar style? How's it sound?
You can try your own thing but they are generally played with a pick, striking the pair of strings at once, you don't have to pinch the pairs of strings with thumb and finger to play them. I had a Streamer 8 string and I could play it fingerstyle with no problem but I have to confess it benefited when I switched to pick and started playing 'Jeremy' or a few old Cheap Trick numbers My Streamer... can you guess why I sold it

I think this seller may have come up on this forum before and I think he is genuine/thorough but this does appear to be a classic case where a guy is trying too hard with his sell. He has described the fact that Dana B Goods in the States have 'heat treated the neck' and that he has spent '2 full days' setting the action on this bass... if it has taken that long to set up I'd be scared sh*tless that the neck will be a pain in the backside if it shifts in transit/humidity/personal preferrence for set-up http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=290249166447
