1.
If the seller is new though, they're not going to find a mutually-trusted mediator are they?
I can happily recommend 5 members off this forum that could be trusted. If the seller has any sense then he should be able to see that trusting a long standing member of this forum to act as a middleman is as honest a way forward as trusting a complete stranger to send you money... yes? <edit> The figure of 5 was plucked out of the air... I can seriously say there would be more than that One thing to consider is would someone want the aggro?
2.
Thanks guys for all your advice. Anyone knows for sure if you are protected with Paypal even if it's not through Ebay? Flying and collection in person is not possible because of time and flight prices.
You are covered by PayPal but the type of account held by the recipient and/or the length of time he has had the account determines the value of cover! £150/£500 etc. Are there no long standing BCers in the Glassgee area?
3.
Well... It was kind-of by accident. I bought it. It arrived. It was fab. But MY GOD it was shiny. Very shiny. And I have a lovely fretless '71. So... I stuck it on eBay with a BIN, and went straight out to a gig with it. It sounded bloody GREAT. 'I'm keeping this,' I thought. 'I'll pull it from ebay when I get home.' Checked my email at half-time... some (lucky) bugger had hit the BIN. Great bass.
Easily done and a good lesson to us all... unfortunately at some point we'll all still sell something that we don't 'really' want to
4. re. WoT's accidental selling... I can't wait to hear this one
5. Soz, been away and didn't spot this one! Have you checked out the Warwick forum and asked there for help and info re upgrades etc? warwick.de/forum
6. If I may say so, its understandable and wise to be just a bit wary in a situation like this. I'm based up near Newcastle if the noobie is from my neck of the woods I've no objection to giving you a hand at sorting this out.
7. There is supposedly a 'sweet spot' for a single pup to be placed Luke, as I read about it years ago in a bass magazine and it can be identified by a mathematical equation relating to tones and overtones... unfortunately that is of no earthly use to you what-so-ever as I can't find the magazine article that it was in I do remember it being to do with divisions of the scale length and you can find it by hitting harmonics along the string length but alas again no use to you if you haven't got a bridge fitted etc. I'm sure some clever bod on here should be able to identify this 'sweet spot'.
8. Doesn't the fool know how to stack cabs for max efficiency? Shame that H&K wasn't the bassbase model and the cabs genuine H&K, I'd have had them to store at my rehearsal space.
9.
I'd like more headroom. And the ability to really drive a preamp section if I want to, I like a bit of crunchiness and I'd rather not have to boost the input gain too much in order to avoid too much noise. I mean, it's not a massive issue but I would feel better with say an 18v preamp.
If you don't get fixed up and are running on a budget (and don't mind leaving the 3rd band mid setting alone) my 18v 3 band MEC preamp circuit and pots will be available soon.
10. I don't think the lack of response to your thread has anything to do with your pics or photography skills but more to do with the present buying/selling climate! The RRP on Warwicks and their present low esteem/presence means that 2nd hand values have taken a hammering £1200 for something that cost £2400 less than a year ago is indeed (very) cheap but folks just aren't stumping up that kind of money at the minute. Hang onto it if you can and just enjoy, things will turn the corner and your Thumb (along with every other Wick) will achieve its true potential
11. Soz for dragging this up but... Has anyone actually seen this mag in the shops yet? My local WHS has 4 copies of the last mag (July/Aug) but no sign of the new one and the staff are as much use as a chocolate fireguard!
12. Moving on can be a good thing, so I would lament too much over the end of that chapter no matter what the circumstances. re. your gear - Do what feels best but if one of those basses is a bit of a 'good-un' I'd hold on to at least that! Good luck in whatever you decide
13.
Near Poole on the south coast. Edit: Damn your in Leeds...
His 'what' is in Leeds? He 'Eats shoots and leaves'!
14. I had various Fenders in the early 80's that were just 'old Fenders' at the time (mainly 70's models but I'm sure I had a mid 60's one... at the time it was just a tatty old bass ) and we swapped/traded them for the latest new fangled bass (Washburn/Ibanez/Warwick) as they (the old Fenders) were just old hat with dodgy necks and noisy pups However of all of the basses I still miss one of the earliest JV Squier basses with the big Fender logo, small Squier... at the time I was chuffed with the £125 I got for it. Not ars*d that it would be worth x5/6/7/8/9/10 that amount but it was just a cracking bass Oh and I ALWAYS regret selling any Warwick
15.
OOH I wouldn't like to be in your shoes if Rach see's that comment. Swift trip to Rake Lane to have a violin bow extracted from somewhere very very painful me thinks
Come on... the bow wouldn't touch the sides
16.
Thanks for your responses, really useful and they are helping me make a decision. Marcus, I live in Bedlington (someone has to!) and will try to get to Bubbles on Saturday, can't miss me, I'm the big bloke with beard and glasses!!! Cheers Charla
Glad you said 'bloke' otherwise 'big/beard/glasses' could have included 50% of the women of Bedlington and before you jump down my throat... I'm allowed to mock as I'm from Blyth and that ratio would be 75% If half the bass playing fraternity of the area turns up I'm not sure there'll be room in Bubbles for the punters!
17. It isn't quite Fender but don't G&L do something similar... hold on that; just realised it will be similar money!
18.
did you look inside to see if there is a trim pot to control the output? Many pre-amps have that built in. It's possible it is set low.
Yes...
19. Schack are good (had one of their carbon necked headless basses) but I found the preamp 'WAY' to complex... Saying that I once had a bass custom built that had one control; Volume! Suited me down to the ground until I installed a 2nd pup
20.
Yeah so I really love the sound of my bass. The only thing that bugs me is the output is surprisingly low, considering it's active (both preamp and pickups). It's a '99 model with SD Bassline pickups, and I think an MEC preamp but I'm not sure (got it used). So I was thinking about upgrading the preamp. It's a 2-band, but that's all I need really, I'm not a fan of fiddling around with knobs much (no I don't mean like that you bloody pervert) so I'm not thinking of getting a 3-band. Any suggestions? I'm a bit clueless when it comes to higher-end electronics.
I agree that a lot of the Warwick MEC preamp outputs can be fairly low BUT (hopefully without sounding patronising) can you match the input gain on your amp to get the desired output? If you can then there really isn't much point throwing money at a new pre. A new higher gain pre would just mean that you'd have to lower the input gain compared to your present pre. It's a different kettle of piscine altogether if you aren't getting the level out of the bass to drive the front end of your amp. This (again) isn't meant to sound patronising but have you got a fresh battery in and does your present preamp have the little blue gain pot fitted? Many Warwick MEC pres have a little blue trim pot sealed into the block that can be tweaked to give more gain (watch you don't increase too much and add noise), have a look inside the cavity... you might get a pleasant surprise. If all this fails there are loads of excellent preamps out there. In fact I have a Warwick 18v 3 band (4 pot) preamp that I am taking out of my Warwick fretless to drop in a 2 band I purchased as I'm not keen on 3 band EQs
21.
Is this thread going anywhere now?
This could be asked of a good few threads
22. Anyone know what the latest state of play with regard to what Spectors and Warwicks they have left?
23.
Right, we've all seen the rigs already owned by many of us, so now lets see the rigs we would all like to own, both amps AND basses lol. I reckon that if people can be bothered, could be interesting lol I'll start with mine. Amp-wise, this 36x10 monster Admit it, if you saw it, you would have a go lol. Although i dont think it would fit in my local venue , or that anyone in general, not just my band would appreciate me using that within about 10 miles of civilization And for the bass, the Spector NS-5XL in green lol (I assume at this point Cetera will jump in lol) Zach
Was that the Ampeg cab made for the guy from Dokken many moons ago (showing my age and musical roots here ) or is that a recent pic?
24. I may be wrong but... drop 'Marcus' a PM as I'm sure he got a couple of the DR cabs off Robbie recently and (though I may be confusing it with his Aguilar 4x10) he may be able to give some insight as he has quite a bit of experience with various 4x10s
25. Dear OP I can cure your GAS(full-stop) I can put you onto someone selling Me'shell N'degeocello's Celinder bass Surely that would stop your 'rainbow chasing' antics Regards Mr Hunt <edit to stick in a smiley as I am being genuine and not being an ars*>
