  1. So do you start with two anonymous blocks of wood (body and neck) or something that is already somewhat body/neck shaped?
  2. Lol, must have been fun working for them! I guess, if you want to rationalise it, the 'naked' fruit machine actually looked fragile and was therefore handled as such.
  3. Not sure how widespread it is, but the Stones trib I saw a while back had names like Mick Stagger or something. But they kind of got into slightly comical versions of the band (well Jagger/Richards/Woods anyway).
  4. Then there is this band:
  5. I kept hearing 6Music DJs back-announcing John Cooper Clarke in the last week or two, and thinking that I didn't remember hearing a JCC record. I worked it out eventually! Good song though!
  6. I'd love to do that if I was going to spend £1000 on a bass. A P would be fine by me, and would love the learning. Bass and mini-holiday in one! However, I'd prefer to go solo (rather than take anyone from home) and either go for a drink with the other builders or hang out on my own.
  7. This looks worth a listen: Don Letts presents the story of King Tubby on Radio 4 Thursday 21st at 11.30. BBC Radio 4 - Dub Revolution: The Story of King Tubby Available to listen on BBC sounds afterwards of course! Here's the blurb: 28 January 2021 would have been legendary sound engineer King Tubby’s 80th birthday. The sonic experiments he created in his tiny studio in the ghettos of Kingston Jamaica during the early seventies helped create a genre that’s now part of the very fabric of contemporary music – Dub. Tubby’s productions pre-empted today’s remix culture, were instrumental in the creation of rap an inspired an eclectic mix of artists from Massive Attack to Primal Scream. Dub went on to inform Jungle, Rave,Techno, Ambient right up to Grime in the 21st century. Don Letts celebrates the godfather of Dub, with contributions from Dennis Bovell, Adrian Sherwood, Hollie Cook and Mad Professor.
  8. They don't work aesthetically for me - so I wouldn't splash any cash on one. Never tried one so don't have any opinion on playability sound etc.
  9. Basically it's Punk and New wave stuff, it includes the usual stuff like Pistols, clash, stranglers, Jam, Undertones, etc but we do include Psychokiller, Boys Don't Cry, Blister in The Sun, Goo-Goo Muck by the Cramps, Another Girl Another Planet, Boredom.
  10. JJ Burnell's 1979 solo album "Euroman Cometh"
  11. 250 is a lot for 10 years ..... well by my standards anyway. I think If I added up all the songs i've done over 37 years (minus a few years where I didn't do any music) in a few originals bands, couple of covers bands, home recording projects , solo open mics spots and songs learned for folk circles it might just get to that number.
  12. thanks, enjoyed that..... showed chops etc but still worked for the music. Would be good to hear a final mix of that with the choir more audible etc.
  13. Makes me think of Dinky Diamond who was in Sparks classic 70's UK line up. He was a drummer though......😕
  14. He seemed like the least of a twonk out of the brothers too. In the Clive Anderson storm-off (which some of us may remember) I think Maurice seemed like the one who may have been prepared to take the joke and laugh it off. Subject to my memory of course.
  15. Cool.... that's 3 songs I sing in my covers band. Not recently of course......... good to be reminded of them!
  16. I've read the book....... and I think it has the potential for a really great series. Plenty of strands in there. The following topics if covered thoughtfully would work really well: the punk scene, McLaren, the Pistols explosion/implosion, the pistols creative process , an insight into the theft culture/lifestyle which Jones inhabited..... But most of all there is the titular 'lonely boy' aspect. Jones had (extremely) brief sexual encounters in massive quantity, but could never form a relationship with a woman. .And the childhood situations which probably led to that. That came across as the underlying thing in the book in my eyes.
  17. I'm not very hardware centric, so don't gas for basses much. But to get into the the spirit of the thread: someone started a thread in GD a couple of months ago about a nice orange bass - I wouldn't mind having that one.
  18. Slightly off topic.............when Robert Wyatt left Soft Machine he formed a new band, Matching Mole..... which was a sneaky way of kind-of-keeping the Soft Machine name. "Soft Machine" in French is Machine Molle and it sounds like Matching Mole in English.
  19. A bass that can't be heard? Many soundmen achieve that without any new instrument developments 😀.
  20. Why bass is important according to science........ hhmmmm could lead to a discussion on whether science matters........
  21. Depends on the song/genre. Sometimes the bass plays the melody (e.g. post-punk), sometimes it plays the groove (e.g. funk). But even if not the above it normally glues the whole performance together and acts like a foundation. I haven't studied the etymology of the word bass, but I assume it is rooted in the word base.
  22. Pedant Alert: I think he was asking for bands who don't have one?
  23. I haven't got a good cover to contribute I'm afraid. But Jolene is one of those songs which I eventually appreciate after many years. I started out as a youth thinking it was just a cheesy country song. Then over the years I saw the appeal...... first I liked the lyrics. Next I got to appreciate the tune. Later I thought the vocal performance was good. Finally I realised that the instrumental arrangement/performance is great too!
  24. I've always liked Taxman musically but I always feel conflicted because I don't like the lyrics. So It's good that SRV has made a version which removes the conflict 😉!
  25. I guess you would be including the Pixies version of "Honey Pie" (which I posted) in that statement I do genuinely love the Pixies version.......but had never heard the Beatles version until 5 minutes before posting here. Can't say I'm that keen on the Beatles version, but I guess if you like the Beatles version then the Pixies version would sound bad.
