And I guess it earned that ultimate guitar accolade - to be banned from guitar shops!

Yep - regardless of your music genre, if you learned 6 string you learned Hilton's HOTRS.

I remember listening to an edition of Desert Island Discs, where the 'castaway' mentioned that the producer had given them the brief something like: "Don't think of your 8 best records, think of 8 most important moments/things in your life and then nominate the record associated with them" First I was surprised that such a comment was not edited out, as it reveals the inner workings of the show. I also thought: What do you mean? Finding my best 8 records was the 8 most important moments/things in my life!

Help me to Understand the working of Variable Resistor
Nail Soup replied to Matt brown's topic in General Discussion
Sorry if it's egg sucking (or wrong!): One key thing about variable resistors.... two types: Logarithmic and Linear. Logarithmics increase the resistance more in the first degrees of the rotationn (or slide) than later on. Linear each degree turned increases the resistance by the same amount. Volume controls are typically log, because (as I understand it) that's how human psychoacoustics relates to the sound. Tone controls for example I think are typically linear. -
Question about tuning a bass vs 'normal' guitar?
Nail Soup replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
I think it meant playing a harmonic at the 12th fret, rather than a fretted note...... so this method is tolerant of poor intonation I would say. -

Brass Klezmer? Have you been on the Late Junction again? Seeing there have a couple brassy ones, how about this...... Don't know if saxes count as Brass. Or traffic cones. -

440hz is standard concert pitch - what most of us use. -
Question about tuning a bass vs 'normal' guitar?
Nail Soup replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
Standard bass tuning is same as standard guitar tuning - so it is “wrong”. is there an option to reset it to standard? -
And mumbling actors nowadays - I guess they’re going for added realism or something.. Mind you, I find that real life people mumble more the older I get!

I was in the similar situation a few years ago... bought a small TV for the kitchen/diner, but didn't check the sound properly in the shop. Got it home and it was a terrible sound, and quiet to boot. I use the kitchen TV more as a DAB radio, so took it back, had a massive argument with the shop and eventually they relented and allowed me to buy a different model. Sounding good now 😀!

"There is no money above the 5th fret" - The Origin
Nail Soup replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in General Discussion
I think I've heard similar adage(s) as a paraphrases of "Blue Suede Shoes" 'It's "X" for the Money, "Y" for the Show' -
Which "Famous" bass players offer 1-2-1 online lessons?

But he'll teach anyone..... he's not picky -
Another way to support bands and venues is to hold on to any tickets you have and wait until the gig happens .... rather than getting a refund.

But a big thumbs up from some people😀 -
Not a mispressing/misprint as such, but the converse to the "pillock who took it back" story. I bought My Bloody Valentine album "Isn't Anything" - the first 5000 copies of which came with a free MBV single. Except mine was with a different single (also on Creation Records). Like a pillock I kept it, thinking that I already had 12 MBV songs, and this would be a bit of variety. Still kicking myself 33 years later!

Looks like a good pedal, and a good player.......... but don't people to see people operating "stud" switches in socks!

Luckily I don't receive any voice texts.... but they would probably annoy me if I did. I don't like (or listen to) voicemails on my phone... the type you get if you don't answer a call. Instead of listening to them I call the person back - as others have said here. However the "call back instead of listening" approach is heavily criticised by David Mitchell in this clip. I normally like him too 😐.

Not sure I can comment on how things will go in the future but the Indo-made Squier Tele I bought last year was great .

One way is to get some pre-recorded beats from a 'library' of some kind which you then loop in the DAW. The other way is to program your own..... most DAWS have a kind of "piano roll" where you can place each drum onto the beats you want it. I prefer this way as a) I feel the end product is 'my work' and b) sometimes you can't find the beat you need. Example of a piano roll, with a (simple) drum pattern I made for a middle 8 which I probably could not have found in a library.

Yes - I'm not spending much time keeping the knowledge up to date. But on the occasions I do practice I remember more than I thought I would. But not enough!

Youtube favourite which I keep coming back to. Not well known.... but brilliant punk / power pop from 1980 Canadian band The Modernettes "Barbra". All in 2 minutes.....and the bass player is pretty cool too! -
In theory I do the following: Learning or writing songs - sitting Practicing and band rehearsals - Standing. In practice (no pun intended) I usually practice sitting down though .
-
If someone stops playing for some reason, they signal the rest of the band to carry on playing with a circular motion of the hand... kind of vertical like a bike wheel.

In folk circles, the chord sequence (maybe an A part and B part) tends to repeat throughout the song without an agreed end, and people join in as they feel like. To bring the song to an end the 'leader' of the song sticks his leg out - then at the end of that repetition everyone ends together.
