You don't need to solder if you use a tape with conductive adhesive
Though you may want to solder an earth wire onto the shielding at some point! I

To be clear, I have never owned or played through a barefaced Cab, so can't comment on the cabs themselves. However, it seems to me that when Alex started he was a single man UK operation building cabs, first for himself and then for others. Further more he was a Basschatter. I suspect that consequently he was given a fairly easy ride by Basschat in those early days other than (IIRC) the aesthetics/finish. He was a 'quirky' (in a good way) small builder that people seem to love. Is it possible that they are suffering a bit of a (subconscious) backlash against the easy ride of the early days? Alex/Barefaced are now an established company going up against, and being compared with, the likes of Vanderkley, Bergantino etc. Alex should take this as a compliment, but it does mean that the quality, in all respects, now has to measure up against those competitors. To quote that famous Fanny Craddock line (the one that finished her TV Career): "You're among professionals now, dear". I'm pretty sure that Alex is listening to the comments, hopefully objectively, and making improvements were he can, as should all companies. If not then Barefaced will be short lived. In short I don't think that Barefaced are being treated unfairly, they are just being treated as any other company. PS: No one seems to complain whee Behringer get repeatedly slagged off on these pages, often by people with out personal experience.

Allowing someone to use your bass at a gig.
as long as they've proved not to be a pratt, no problem. It's only a bass. I always love it when people play my old '75 P bass, especially if they don't really play/like P basses. They always say how amazing it is.
This for me, especially the bit I've highlighted. Personally I would have no problem lending it, particularly in the circumstances of the other persons kit failing. I agree it would be annoying if someone just turned up assuming that they could borrow a bass, and I guess I'd have reservations if it was someone who was pissed, or just didn't seem to know what they were doing with it. Personally I'd rather risk my bass than gain a reputation as a stuck up c**t who wouldn't help a fellow human being in a (minor) crisis. I have a melodeon and an anglo concertina that cost way more than any of my basses. I would (and have) lent those to someone (Melodeons are pretty robust anyway). The problem hasn't really arisen with the anglo as they tend to be very individual (in terms of button spacing, spring pressures, even the layout of the notes, etc), and so don't really get borrowed. (I only mention this to indicate that, for me it's not to do with the value) Rig as well really: If your rig is properly spec'ed and put together then it should be bomb proof. And as for a backup bass. How many people here actually take a backup bass to a gig?(A serious question - not rhetorical). I never have, and have never had a catastrophic failure. Perhaps I need to reconsider this. -
Marshall Integrated Bass System 200W head and (1x15?) cab
Have had a fair few Marshall set-ups, my fave being a DBS7400 into the VBC412. But both were way too heavy for me in the end. Shame, wasa cracking rig.
I've got the DBS7400, but not the cab. I was looking at the DBS7412 Cab for a while, but it weighs in at around 7 stone!!!!! Gary Twig has the 7400/ 7412 combination and it sounds brilliant, but then I guess he's got Roadies! -
As I'm deeply unimpressed with Blackstar guitar amps, I won't be in the queue if they do venture into the deep end.
Well I'm not a guitarist so I couldn't judge, but I thought they had a reasonable reputation. I was thinking more of the Marshall link however. -
The one song (Cover) that you would love to gig and why ?
Count Bassy replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
Used to be "Pick up the Pieces", but we do that in the current band! -

I have a DBS400 and it's brilliant in every way except the weight. Have just bought Karlfer's Carvin BX700 to try out as a light weight alternative. Trying it out tonight - time will tell. But it would have to be exceptional for me to move the DBS on. I hadn't realised that Marshall had dropped their bass range. It seems a shame to me. Are any of them continuing but with an Eden" badge, or are they completely dropped? No doubt original Marshalls will now become collectors items! PS, why does the site spell checker work on American English - can I change this? PPS: Just visited the "New Improved" Marshall web site and it is crap compared to what it used to be! PPPS: Time for Blackstar to venture into bass perhaps?? -
... but should have cut the cavity covers from the same piece of wood as the body. (IMHO)

Jimi's is good, but Johnny Winter's is one of my personal favourite versions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doGij4HItlk Also a brilliant song. Just a shame that so many other chuck Berry songs are pretty well the same tune (though not all by any means). Every band should play JBG.

Seems a shame that the collected brains of Basschat see fit to slag this off without anyone (apparently) having actually tried it!! I haven't, but as my left right hand technique is probably my weakest point (one of many weak points), and I spend quite a time in hotels, I would be prepared to give it a go before I condemned it. As well as technique could also be useful just to keep the finger tips in trim. If they did a 7 fret version it would also be useful for practising scale shapes over two octaves. Having said that, for travelling in the UK, a 5 string short scale headless "cricket bat" would probably be more use in the UK. For travelling that includes flying I could see it being useful. Mind you: 74 Euros !

Brilliant instruments in my opinion. Bought a GWB35 (fretless) first, then a 505 as it seemed the closest thing to a fretted GWB35, then a 605 purely because I prefer the look of the lighter body. Still got all three!

Went to see RC and the Shortlist at the the Robin 2 last night. Now, I know that I am biased, but I've still got to say that, even by his standards, the gig was absolutely brilliant. Was anyone else there?
Surely those very loyal fans who have probably spent a fortune on tickets, travel and accommodation in London and waited all this time deserve to hear those as an absolute minimum.
Wasn't there, and never a fan as such, so I have absolutely no idea, but could it be that after 35 years she might have struggled with some of the notes?
Bandstand was a return to form after a few hit and miss albums but with only Chapman and Whitney left from the line-up of that great debut LP of four years previous.
Errr, and Rob Townsend !!!!

Buffalo Soldier notation anyone & Reggae advice.

Agreed that it's more about timing/feel than the tone (though tone helps). Putting the emphasis on the 3 is a good starting point to get into the feel. -
What is it I don't like about Ernie Ball guitars?
Count Bassy replied to thisnameistaken's topic in General Discussion
That is true.... but I did say that EB aren't alone in this. It is a business decision of many many companies to ship build from the Far East. This isn't about better QC..it is about CHEAPER QC as those places are cheaper to build in. Simple. Now, some companies might split and have an entry level line and a U.S/western build line so this does, IMO dilute the marque. I don't think a £600 far east product is necessarily poor in itself, but they make far more profit selling a £600 bass made in the far est than they do made in the West, paying western salaries. You can outsource pretty much anything, but sooner or later you are going to put a lot of people out of work getting it made cheaper elsewhere. This is why I say it cheapens the Marque as the MAIN beneficies are the 'Shareholders'. I use the term shareholder loosely as it may well be a privately owned company..so consider that a euphermism for 'MAXIMUM PROFIT' But back to the core point, it is not solely EB's fault, I apply this thinking to all my kit and I don't own any amp, cab or bass made in the Far East.
Possibly "Cheapen the Marque", but probably does wonders for sales, and encourages people to take dip a toe in the EBMM lake. -
I posted saying if you don't like something, then don't buy it. I can't see the mileage in the "I like/dislike coz" debate. The great thing about the human race is we are all different, and have individual likes/dislikes, that's what makes the world go around. Slagging this Bass against that Bass is pointless, it is just your opinion/taste.
Well, as per the name of this site, we are here to chat about basses. Discussing likes and dislikes is surely what it's all about. I don't think that anyone is slagging any basses off here (well maybe a few are), but just asking what makes some people like one bass and other people another. You're right it is totally down to individual choice, but as this is a discussion forum let's discuss things. Just pretend you were down the pub having a chat with a load of bass players; I'm sure this sort of discussion would occur and be welcomed in those circumstances. I have got used to playing Ibanez SR series, and love the thin neck. By contrast the few Stingrays I've tried have necks like a tree trunk, and I know which I prefer, but people who play and like Stingrays probably hate Srs, and worry that the neck is going to snap at any moment! No rights and wrongs, just different, but no reason not to discuss those differences (IMHO). -
If you're also responsible for scheduling tell the bands that their time starts 15 minutes (or what ever) after the last band finished, irrespective of whether they've started playing by then or not. It will concentrate their mind on setting up quickly. Sadly it won't make the band just finished clear the stage any quicker!!

I think the truth is that is it doesn't matter too much how you coil a cable, as long as you uncoil it by the reverse process. The problem occurs when you coil it say round an elbow, but uncoil it by just pulling it straight. The beauty of the methods in the vids are that it allows for the fact that you are going to pull it out straight.
-
Coil it properly (as seen in vid) then I put two velcro ties opposite sides of the coil. Generally works- but doesn't help when other band members don't bother. (of course being the bass player I end up supplying all the PA kit!). We have two boxes for cables, one clearly marked Instrument & Mic leads, the other speaker & power leads. It would seem that most band members can't read either.

Clout John Wetton over the head and take his.

Jeez, i hate crap like this. God awful..
Count Bassy replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
That's why they call it show business! (Unfortunately the rest of the band is awful.) And I think that people keep posting this, not because they think that they are the first, but because it perpetuated the joke. The challenge is to sneak it in under the radar so that people don't realise what it is until it is too late. -
but can quote stuff like Stravinsky in his lines (where I lay my hat).
Cover version, hence worthless!!

Well, I couldn't swear to the details as it was 35 or so years ago (Yikes!), but it was definitely Grolsch and it was definitely cheaper than Heineken at the time. However I didn't realise that Grolsch made different grades, so it may be that I was comparing one of their cheaper ones. Even if it was one of the cheaper ones it was still one of my favourites at the time, so no disrespect for Grolsch here (except that I'll stick with a 'proper' straplock). I also recall that trip because we got to try real 'live' Heineken in their Amsterdam brewery (since closed I believe), which was a real eye opener after the fizzy pop we got (and still get) over here.
