1. specifically about miking acoustic guitars, but the principles are the same http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug01/arti...ecacgtr0801.asp there are internal piezo pickups which actually pick up the vibrations of the wood, rather than the strings at the saddle. Here's one such... http://www.dangleberrymusic.co.uk/Boston_A...2.html?et_gBase you've already got a suitable hole in the Tanglewood but it would mean effectively disabling the saddle pickup system and tying the existing connector back so that it doesn't rattle while you experiment with one of the above...
 2.
I read a really excellent book at university which I can't find in print or online anywhere now. It was from the '50s/'60s and called something corny like "Clap Your Hands". It had a whole bunch of rhythmic exercises starting from the most basic to really complex patterns. It was all written in notation and you didn't need an instrument to practice on. I used to sit in law lectures tapping on my desk.
this book is in print and is worth studying closely... 3.
You can rest easy, it is a good old Crafted in Japan 51RI. Bought from a fellow Basschatter only a short while ago especially for this task. It should have the paint job done now so I will get some photo's up end of this week.
I'm confused, why didn't you buy a Warmoth body and sell on the original body to cover the cost? Would have saved all the labour involved in stripping the "mustard" off and re-shaping the body.
 4.
The OP claim of 4 sets at !00 dollars is not to bad, i think it works out at about Fifty quid. so £12.50 a set.
no, it's worse... he's talking about a pack of 4 strings...
 5. I have Rotosound SM77 Jazz flats on my electric basses http://www.rotosound.com/jazz77.html and LaBella LAB_760N Black Nylon Tapewounds on my acoustic bass... I play blues, Jazz, old style blues rock (Zepp, Cream, Hendrix etc.) and love the low end thump of the Rotos and the nice mellow upright sound of the LaBellas, plus, once played in, the strings last for years... none of this new strings malarky every few weeks you get with roundwounds...
 6. just an aside... I wimped out on fitting Rotosound flats on my Tanglewood... I knew how tight they were on my VMJ... I have LaBella black Nylon tapewounds on mine and it's very mellow and upright sounding. Good unplugged volume as well. oh and with a piezo under saddle pickup acoustic bass (or guitar for that matter), it's highly recommended not to remove all the strings at once when changing them as it's possible to mess up the contact with the pickup because the pickup or bridge saddle could move slightly.
 7. I anchor on 3rd fret for playing in G but it allows my lines to go around the root rather than all being above the root.
 8. those mini Marshall clip on amp thingies will not handle bass... I've tried it... they don't like it at all... You want an 8" speaker at the very least... try looking at a pig nose hog for an amp with internal batteries... http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/hog-30...0--batter/67886 I use a Peavey practice amp in conjunction with a leisure battery and a can-convertor (small 12v DC to 240V AC inverter) I picked up in Tesco of all places... I already have leisure batteries (I use an electric trolling motor to get my boat on and off the mooring) My Tanglewood acoustic bass is loud, but well out of your budget unless you find one secondhand. It only buzzes why I get really, really enthusiastic... I took the relief up to get rid of the buzz, perhaps you should have looked at a proper setup job first before burning it. I always carry the allen key anyway as the acoustic is slightly prone to needing adjustment when traveling (something to do with the humidity by the river or sea).
 9. why is it there's scads of jam tracks for lead guitarists to widdle over, but very few jam tracks for rhythm guitarists to play over? There seems to be this innate thinking that all guitarists want to play lead, yet in real life, the vast majority will really be playing rhythm most of the time and only stretching out for a solo spot when the song breaks for it
 10.
£15???? If anyone's interested, I can get you one for a tenner (For the less gullable you can buy one for a quid from Mapplins, but it won't have an 'i' prefix, which of course means it's not as good)
ha ha... I think this is what the extra £14 is for:
• Nitrogen-injected dielectrics and Double Helix construction for the best possible connection.
there may actually be a passive circuit in it... anyway, those jack adaptors... I got mine for free... came with various headphones...
 11. Victor's hair band/scrunchie is to damp the open strings so he doesn't have to worry about muting them while slapping the others... Carol's masking tape (really has felt under it) is to apply some damping to all the strings as they are played... rather like the original Fender mute that sat under the bridge ashtray... but less aggressive...
 12.
Blimey, thats a turn up, I reckon our drummer would struggle getting the pc out of its box.
mine would play the box... he'd probably get a mean sound out of it as well...
 13.
Reaper not free any more /edit missed Al's post
news to me... the version I run was released as honesty ware (for personal non-commercial use. Any other usage and you had to purchase a license) and didn't time cut or nag at all when the evaluation period ran out... Does the new version time out now when the evaluation period is over?
 14.
(This should be in the pickups section!)
there isn't a pickups section in this forum...
 15. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is the proper site for it... 16. nice one... although you won't be the first player unable to play his own line in guitar hero...
 17.
Looks like you'll have to compromise!!! How many original punk bass players used active basses?????
correct... I used a beat up old clunker '69 Fender P-Bass that I hand painted myself to gloss white as I couldn't afford a brand new Fender and before anyone call sacrilege... this was back in 78 and beat up old '69s were easily available and cheap... not only that I got mine for free. Was given me by my cousin as he'd lost interest.
 18. oh dear... opinions are like a***holes.... everyone has one...
 19.
An ad is an ad. When did you last see one that said 'don't buy my product - it's rubbish'. A lot of the ads you see will be keen 'improvers' like yourself and not next weeks chart toppers like they say.
I went along to one "audition" for a band that wanted a professional bass player... turned out I lost the slot the moment I unzipped my gigbag to reveal a Squier VMJ... Rather funny, as when I next saw them play with their new "professional" bass player and his fancy Fender... all he was doing was playing straight eighths on the root notes... I could easily play him off the stage any day...
 20. come on... how can you hate music that has such sublime lyrics as this: FFwd to 0.45 seconds... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLxNbEuOO20
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way. I can't wait to look in the mirror 'cos I get better looking each day to know me is to love me I must be a hell of a man. O Lord it's hard to be humble but I'm doing the best that I can. I used to have a girlfriend but I guess she just could'n't complete with all of these lovestarved women who keep clamouring at my feet. Well I probably find me another but I guess they're all in awe of me who cares I never get lonesome cause I treasure my own company. Oh Lord it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way. I can't wait to look in the mirror 'cos I get better looking each day to know me is to love me I must be a hell of a man. O Lord it's hard to be humble but I'm doing the best that I can. I guess you can say I'm a loner a cowboy outlaw tough and proud Well I could have lots of friends if I wanted but then I wouldn't stand out from the drowd some folks say that I'm "egotistical well I don't even know what that means I guess it has something to do with the way that I fill out my skintight blue jeans. Oh Lord it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way. I can't wait to look in the mirror 'cos I get better looking each day to know me is to love me I must be a hell of a man. O Lord it's hard to be humble we are doing the best that we can.
21.
Well it would be a statement ... Who were those US guitar rockers on Jools a while back in suits and horn rimmed glasses? That was memorable - well except for their name, obviously
The Hold Steady?
 22.
i struggle like buggery, always have. my hardest one hadta be when i was in a jam tribute band(the setting sons) trying to do the piss easy bass line an the harmony to "start.." the vocal suffered... its,not.... importantfor... me,too...knowyourname...
rather amusing as Paul Weller was originally the bassist in The Jam, but swapped roles with Bruce Foxton because he couldn't sing and play bass at the same time... well, that's what I heard/read somewhere... I'm having great difficulty finding a link to back me up on exactly why Weller dropped Bass to play Guitar...
