1. misread the thread title... thought it said "string cleaner that stops you sucking"... I'd pay good money for some of that...
 2.
When I had a similar problem on my St**tocaster afew years ago I rang Fender's UK distributor, Arbiter at the time, and they sent me one. My Jazz came with a t-bar allen key type thing with a ball end that you can use at an angle. it would be worth tracking one down if your adjuster is at the body end of the neck. [email protected] i've just dug out the parts list that came with my US std jazz case candy. It came with a 3/16" bondhus allen Wrench part no.004-8693-000. bridge saddle adjuster is 1/16" An IKEA allen key that came with a flat pack fitted my old G&L perfectly! I wouldn't recommend this though as it's easy to bugger up the adjuster if you don't have a perfect fit Hope this helps
allen adjusters scare me... the truss ones just seem so soft... and they're in so deep that getting access is hard. I've found that T-bar allen wrenches are like the proverbial rocking horse poo. Hardware shops just don't stock them... and even Maplin don't carry any.
 3. now GASsing for: a fair sized portable combo (about 60 watts should do it...) & a Squier 5 string Jazz Bass http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...rtno=0300575500 yeah, it's a Squier, but I've got to cut down my budget for this year... order from SWMBO (my daughter... she says I've got enough... don't know what she's moaning for, I'm picking up her new guitar on Friday...) I'll probably trade my Peavey in for it...
 4. http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?Produc...CollectionID=12 finishes eb & mg (ebony & metallic gold) hmmm what a porky... unless you could only get mg when he allegedly bought it... or else he's alluding that you can't get the ebony in the UK... tried finding a dealer with it..,. hard in just a quick search... not a lot of people carry them...
 5.
^^^ WH, methinks he is a dealer in anything BUT basses and doesnt know that much about them. The fortunate part is that he will ONLY sell to US bidders so some poor mug over there wil have to put it right!
he's an American... the Bass is in America... bit cheeky using the UK ebay...
 6.
Brilliant, I had no idea this program existed, just downloaded it and am busy learning YYZ by Rush, thanks a million for this. I practice with a small Peavey combo, the gig rig is too much for our humble dwelling !
ha ha... currently wish I had a gig rig here... some locals are playing Drum&Bass very loudly and I'd love to fight back with some very out of tune and badly fumbled practicing... I've gone into headphone mode to get away from it. I'm using wireless headphones though, it's difficult enough as it is with one cable to worry about... let alone having another to get caught by the bass as you practice...
 7.
Actually, yeah - Stu Hamm and Alex Sklarveski did some pretty decent tuition vids, altho it helps to see a good tutor. The biggest lesson I learnt was hammer-on dead notes with the fretting hand - after that it made a lot more sense. And someone pointed out about miller and flea clones...yeah - I watched Claypool and he was the only player who made me want to slap as he approached from a more interesting angle. Rob trujillo (now Metallica fame...) was also a bit of a demon, esp when combined with performance - dont forget the performance aspect. Musos are boring to watch. Work at both concepts. good luck dude.
found this Alexis Sklarveski clip on Youtube... basically gives the game away on the "secret" of slapping... 8.
it would be nice if it could quickly analyse the bpm of the track and then let you set a target bpm... or else you give it the target bpm and it works out what fraction to slow it down by... I'm going to see how well that windows program runs in Linux using Wine... not sure if it will work though as it uses some CD ripping utility. oh shoot, I'd try it if half the internet wasn't working... there's scads of US sites down and it's very hit and miss...
well, it actually works in Linux... well, slowed down playback of CDs... doesn't want to play MP3s or wavs as apparently I haven't got "windows" correctly set up for mp3 playback. Nice to slow it down... gets a bit distorted below 50% of normal speed... hey ho... off to find out how to get Wine to support MP3 and wav playback...

 10. from personal experience, I do not recommend the Danelectro eStudio http://www.danelectro.com/Danomiscproductpage.jpg It looks the biz (retro styled with extra distortion and echo effect), comes with it's own headphones, but it lacks an aux input and the sound quality is poor as it hisses at a constant volume. I think the hiss comes from the output stage as it is completely unaffected by the volume control. It's just present ALL the time while the unit is on.
 11. Is it possible to change my login name without having to create a new login and losing my "valued" number and posting history?
 12.
I consider this my first 'proper' bass, that being one of a good construction and sounding good also. I still have this now, albeit in a somewhat defretted mode ! It makes a great fretless instrument and I play it most days. Of course it wasn't always fretless - I did get myself this rather handsome and well priced Vintage V940FL (well the missus bought it as a Christmas present). Fantastic piece of wood, sounded great and looked the part too. Only sold this about 6 months ago as I found my self becoming dissassociated with fretless (unlined didn't help me either).
Pity, such a nice Bass... I'd have paid to get it fretted rather than sell it.
 13. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dub_music King Tubby, Mad Professor, Scientist Trojan did a Dub box special, not sure if it's still available. I happen to like Asian Dub Foundation and Dub Pistols they're a bit more lively (danceable) and less weird, some dub is almost unlistenable to unless you're out of your head...
 14. I've gone for Schallers on all my Basses, mainly because they were the only ones the local shop had... The only thing that annoys me is that I've had to enlarge the holes in the straps to get the strap part through and on thick leather, there isn't much thread to get the nut onto. Also had to drill out and deepen the screw holes for the thicker, longer Schaller screws.
 15.
Don't these bare an uncanny resemblence to rocking horse poo in the second hand market?!
there must be something right about them then... looking on the web page, it just screams Fender P-Bass to those who don't know better... 16.
We'd all like to see more transcriptions in the mag, and there are several writers, myself included, who are more than up for doing them. The problem is print licenses are very expensive, and mean that they can't happen in every issue. Bear in mind that the US bass mag is run by an enormous company that is undoubtedly more able to do such things. One of the reasons for revamping the columns last year was to get more music into the mag in a different way. While they may not feature all your favourite riffs, there's plenty of musical content - Steve Lawson has looked at a variety of interesting melodic applications, Dave Marks has covered several different musical styles, and my column provides some ammunition for general improvisation. Stu
you know they put MP3 files up on the website, would it be possible to also put guitar pro files of the lessons and transcriptions as well, then people could play them back at a tempo they want to use and selectively mute various instruments. Using guitar pro files doesn't necessarily require the reader to possess guitar pro, you can play them back just as well and edit them using Tux Guitar http://www.tuxguitar.com.ar/ cross platform (uses Java and there are downloads available for windows, OSX and Linux)
 17.
Hey all, I've started posting a new series of video lessons which goes through basslines from well known songs that are simple but musical and very effective. [...] Feel free to post more suggestions, Dave
The Thrill is Gone Stormy Monday (the "They call it stormy Monday, but Tuesday's just as bad" song, apparently there's another Stormy Monday) Killing Floor
 18.
Bass of choice >>> 80w 1x12 (modified damping) Creative Zen Touch >> Musical Fidelity B200 >> Audiovector 3x (A relatively accurate & flexible stereo with a large yet refined pair of loudspeakers) The speakers are wired 180degrees out of (absolute) phase, and thus partially cancel the combo's output, This helps reduce the impact on my neighbours.
Have you got the speakers on a switch so you can quickly get back to in phase?
 19. looking at those saddles. I'd be frightened to use a pick for fear of the strings coming off...
 20. wasn't in Smiths today... still had the May/June issue there...
 21. if you see it, get the "Live at the El Mocambo" DVD... magic gig at a small "intimate" venue... the guys just get on down and build a monster platform for Stevie to play over. You'll also see a lot of Tommy Shannon's playing style... the fingering is not as you would normally expect... he tends to stay down on the E and A strings and moves around a lot on those two
 22.
I use my Zoom B2 and it's fantastic
the only thing wrong with the B2 and B2.1U is that they lack an aux input for running a CD/MP3 player into.
 23. enjoy yourselves... I can't make it now.
 24. I like the Bass... but can't get over the fact this guy went out of his way to buy it and have it shipped over from the states and has never played it because he can't play bass... one of those "collector" types... wonder if he'll ever make his reserve...
