Don't ask me why, but this is what happens and I speak from experience...
I've got hold of some clear glue "dots" for when I get round to it again... 2. I think I put too much 3-in-1 and not enough Lem-oil on the stick... mind you, I'm not sure it's fully soaked down yet... I'm picking up a new Fast Fret stick this weekend and I'll see what the old one is like after a couple of weeks soak and usage on my old practice bass... note to self, must get a length of 1" Plastic tube and end caps etc. to make this thingy: http://www.tunemybass.com/strings/bass_str...aning_tube.html
3. http://www.bassurgery.com/ domain is up for sale...
4. The only thing Picato have going for them is the price... about half the price of other flats... so good for sticking on the practice bass and for price conscious music students and that's about it... I wouldn't buy another set... Given the life of flats, it's a bit of a false economy, but they probably sell mostly to parents who don't know anything about Picato except that they've been asked to get flats and they're half the price of the others... that's if you can even find any flats in the shops...
5. Pick mine up on Friday 28th... Early Christmas present... I've been good...
6. I'm trying to do my bit for the "Planet"... the Three R's... Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Why buy a new Fast Fret stick... which most likely has been shipped right round the planet... China to America then onwards... when it could be possible to recharge it. I'm going to try recharging the fast fret stick by applying some 3-in-1 oil on it and also spritzing some Lem-oil on it as well to help it soak in.
7.
My band's going through a big hoo hah at the moment over the way one of the backing vocalists who's been with us 4 weeks spoke to me at rehearsal. In a nutshell, she was extremely condescending to me and said that I couldn't be expected to learn the part in question as quickly as the keyboard player because I'm "just a bassist", she then told everyone they had to be patient with the non-musicians in the band. The week before the other backing vocalist commented on how novel it was that I read music, to which the first one said that bass music is much easier to read than "proper" music. I kept my mouth shut at the time but it has since become an issue and it looks like she'll be out the door very soon. If she'd have been a bloke I'd have punched his lights out - it's a shame I'm not an equal rights bassist really!
give her the bass to play... put your feet up... after all, she's a vocalist... and you're "just a bassist"...
8. Fiesta red... that's just a poncy name for pink isn't it? If you asked the "man in the street" what colour it was, he'd say pink...
9.
is it important for the ramp to be the same radius as the fingerboard (as on the gary willis basses) or can it just be a block of wood?
my pickups are flat, so my ramp is flat and the same height.
10.
Was thinking similar here... so, what does a ramp on a bass do? Pete.
makes it easier to play consistent finger style between the pickups or between the pickup and the neck... effectively makes the pickup very wide... 11. My fast fret stick appears to be drying out... would it be OK to put a few drops of 3-in-1 oil on it and let it soak in? Would 3-in-1 be safe for the fretboard (rosewood)? It's a bit difficult to use a Fast-Fret stick without getting some on the fretboard... I normally do my fretboards once a month with Dr. Stringfellow Lem-oil
12.
Just heard an incident in my office which made my blood boil. Two guys im my office were talking about bands and the one phrase I overheard was "well it doesn't matter about the bass player, coz they don't do anything anyway".....
just bring in two mp3 files of the same track, one with bass in the mix, the other without...
13. of course it's "Limited"... limited to how many they can push out the factory door that year... at least the Warwick ones are really limited... and you know what the production run is for it
14. I'm very happy with the "nearly new" RB6 I got for a nice price only a month ago from another BC member... only downside is the weight at 28 Kg. Gets a bit awkward going up and down the stairs to my flat...
15. at least you don't have to wonder if the control cavity and pickups are shielded...
16. I like the Woolies suggestion...
17.
I can't wear what I get out of bed to a gig. It scares people. ....but this got me sacked once. I prefer neat/sharp. The punters can wear jeans if they want to.
I think they may have thought you were going to pull a "Rick Wakeman" and eat a take-away curry onstage during the guitar solo...
18. doobee, doobee, doobee, doobee... abba, dabba, split it into couplets or triplets and use nonsense words which can be said fast... pretty soon, it'll sound like scat singing... http://www.philtulga.com/counter.html gives some counting based on standard counting schemes, there's a flash application that allows you to build a sequence and hear it counted out loud. Unfortunately, it only allows 4;4, 3;4 & 2;4 meters
19. could have gone down the music shops and bought a Zither for less...
20. they're not biting... looks like you may have to resort to ebay If I had the money, I'd think about it, but I've got a moaning back and I'm tempted in the direction of a Mark bass setup as a long term goal...
21.
Actually, I noticed that Jack White from the White Stripes has now started plaing bass on some of the terrible songs they do. They still sound awful (a bit like the sixth-form band I was once in), but he obviously couldn't ignore the draw of the low end.
oh yes... very seductive the bottom end is... it's what really gets the crowd moving... guitars just melt faces, basses shake things up and get your feet moving... ps, I think the one armed drummer from Def Leppard plays a better beat than Meg White...
22. that's weird... he's claiming The Gossip don't have a Bass player... actually Nathan is listed as Guitarist/Bassist. I've seen him playing both Guitar and Bass on stage, using whichever instrument best fits the song. They usually run a backing track with the missing instrument. You can definitely hear both Guitar AND Bass on the records... he just lays down one part and then lays down the other... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KSfdD8q2y0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poBPu8quCkk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3sAHqg_uys what's he playing in all three??? yes Basses... so that interview is a load of bovine excreta... Bassless my *&*& That article is 4 years old... did you guys check the date??? What's frightening is these "bedroom" artists using software packages to simulate instruments for their multitrack extravaganzas... http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/StudioIns...ts/overview.asp "Can't play bass, drums, piano, or violin? No problem! Just point and click and you are making music. It's that easy!" http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/StudioInstruments/bass.asp "Highlights * Load presets for multiple electric bass sounds from classic to modern * Play essential bass lines in a variety of styles and easily transpose them to the key of your song * Includes patterns in a variety of styles: Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues, Funk, and more * You can also drag patterns into your recording software to make variations * Get bass sounds ranging from aggressive to smooth with control over Bass, Mid, Treble, Drive, and Compression * Select Pick-ups and Slide between notes for even more realistic sounds * Use your MIDI controller, computer keyboard, or interactive fretboard to play * Strings strum in time with the music * Load and trigger multiple bass lines for different sections of your song " now that's scary...
23.
As for endorsements, they're the most effective way to sell instruments to people who might otherwise not get a chance to hear or play a bass if a music store isn't convenient. Many younger players will purchase an instrument unplayed and unheard if its played by a famous bass player.
question is, do Mike Dirnt and Frank Bello actually use the Squier Signature Editions named after them on stage???
