2. nice bit of carpet there mate... pity someone left a piece of firewood on it... cheers, I've got the Squier vintage modified Jazz on order myself...
3. there's scratchings in the top horn... looks like runes... ?
4. the neck is "straight and true"... only because it's not under load... wonder why he photographed it in bits? probably doesn't all go together...
5. Do I need a passport to get into Wales these days? you're not too far away from me and I may be able to get to the Sunday gig... I've been stiffed for baby-sitting my grandkids on the Monday though...
6. I'd be tempted to make one myself having seen what he's done... 'cept, I'd probably use marine ply to make the box with and design it so the neck, strings, tailpiece and bridge can come off and be stowed in the box for transit...
7.
Yeh but Dee Dee Ramone only ever had to play three notes and usually on the one string. And no one at a Ramones gig, including Dee Dee, would have known whether they were the right three notes Did look damn cool though Chris
oh heck... that was my style back in the punk late seventies... three notes... even had them marked behind the frets with dots of paint... however, I used two strings... and did five notes... E, G, A, C, D... I even know the names now... go me...
8. I'm now "sorted"... just got back from a fellow forum members place with a nice Laney RB6 in the back of my car... what a nightmare drive... M5 holiday traffic both ways... stop/go/crawl in heavy rain... no fun at all, and my back's now playing up... no alternate route either in or out of the West Country either... I'm nadgered now... too tired to even play with my new "toy"... Nice box, 165 Watts rms, a 15" speaker and horn... nice price... inside my budget... he's sorted as well... tiny little box with 12" speaker and 440 watts!!! Mark Bass I think it had on the grill... anyway, much lighter than the Laney, but way out of my budget... Maybe one day...
9. I have no "wife" problem now... I am supreme master of my household...
10.
Hi Rufus Welcome to Basschat... By the way, we're not called oldies anymore.. the new phrase is 'midolescent'.. Look at this from Time magazine this week: "...Ralph and Wanda made their debut in 1977, when Ralph heard of several new books about the challenge of middle age. (Stanley, the friend who, as part of his "midolescent" crisis, ran off in that episode with a meter maid, makes a reappearance in this week's dialogue.) " Sounds pretty good to me! Maybe we're a new breed called 'Bassus Midolescentus' ! Nik
you should know that your post will double the number of English speaking links on Google to the word midolescent when Google next spiders this site... there was only the Time article beforehand... now there's this thread... all other links are foreign language...
11. can you please give details of any you know of and review of how well they go if known I'm trying to get back into the scene and thought this page would be useful for people to gather up all the jam nights they know of. Gloucester and Cheltenham area appears to be dead going by web searches... so does anyone else know of any blues jam nights in this area?
12. I'm currently looking at this: http://www.behringer.com/BX1800/index.cfm?lang=eng Behringer Ultrabass BX1800 £172 retail although this: http://www.behringer.com/BXL1800/index.cfm?lang=eng Behringer Ultrabass BXL1800 at £203 retail might be better as it has more on-board features plus is 8 lb lighter and has the sub-harmonic processing A Peavey with enough watts is out of my price range... £200 (I can push the extra 3 squid for the Behringer BXL1800)
13. Just how many watts is a reasonable minimum for holding you own in a jam: 50? 100? 200??? I'm speccing and pricing up combos... must be able to be heard in a pub blues jam and also must be light in weight (don't want to pop the back out again) and light on the wallet... My current combo is obviously way to small for the job, but fine for home practice. If I can afford more watts (back and/or wallet), then I'll go for them (nice to have in reserve), but I want to know what the minimum people consider necessary to go out and join in on jam sessions
14. if there's a big O there, it's 2/2 time otherwise, looks a handy sheet to have around... I've saved off a copy... going up to the directory reveals a whole lot of other documents there... http://www.music.sc.edu/ea/jazz/Theory/ University of South Carolina : School of Music: Jazz Studies course is what it's from http://www.music.sc.edu/ea/jazz/index.html
15.
50-year-old born-again muso, stopped playing (piano & guitar) about 25 years ago, re-started (bass only, from scratch) 18 months ago. I play mainly blues, I'm more interested in tone and feel than in speed and techno-wizardry, I collect vintage Hofners and play them through vintage valve amps. I look pretty young but I'm just back-dated.
that would be me as well... played back in the seventies in a punk band... didn't know what I was doing... just played roots hard and fast trying to keep up with with the drummer... sold my Fender to buy a motorbike when I joined the RAF. took it up again last year. Play Blues, Reggae, old Cream and Zepp numbers (the blues ones) Can't afford to buy vintage now... miss my old Fender P, was a pawn shop special... think it was a sixties model... have no photos, so can't check back. Put down a reserve on a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz last weekend, should have the money to complete by end of this month... early Christmas present... Now I want to jam with a band of like minded people... I think I'm ready to jam, need the experience & pressure, bedroom noodling isn't going to advance me much. So any other blues musos in Gloucester area need a Bassist? ps, perhaps I should get a bigger combo amp before jamming? 60Watts enough?
16. Bump... apparently, there's only 20 minutes to go... see you in the morning, nightee night...
17. after all that, it's the same as mine... nice aren't they... mine's a darker blue though... must have put on two coats before doing the clear, or else you've got a bright light on it... cheers PS. have you got a standoff pad behind that Bass so it doesn't accidentally swing into the bricks when you put it on and off the wall hanger?
18. we just work over a backing track, slowed down at first and then sped up as I become more comfortable...
19.
So there are two things you can do to protect your gear from the electronic abuse: 1 don't play venues that have noise limiters 2 play quietly (or run an extension to another power source)
buy a decent sized "On-Line" UPS... run your gear off it... don't let the guitars use it... when the limiter trips, there's just you and the un-miked drums left going and maybe the plaintive warblings of the vocalist... The UPS should give you enough time to get the power restored or else switch off gracefully. If everybody was running off it, then you wouldn't actually know the limiter had tripped unless you looked down to see the alarm on the UPS or the UPS finally ran out of battery power...
20.
BXP, my first bass, still in good condition at about a year old
which model of BXP? what colour? Photos???? blimey... this drip feed is trying our patiences...
21.
Does the copy normally hit your doormat prior to the shop shelf?
yes... usually two weeks early....
22.
All of my 'Forces base' gigs are like playing in a graveyard. No-one dances until the last 2 numbers and then they shout for more, by which time we've run out of material. We come off stage and get told we were fantastic to which we ask "where were you for the last 2 hours then?" in reply we get "I was talking to me mate" or "couldn't dance, I was holdin me pint" arse! It really gets on my wick when that happens.
you're lucky that anyone turned up... single room accommodation and singlies living off base killed entertainment on bases... now the good old days, when we had 4 man rooms and you had to request permission before you could live off base... plus few singlies had the dough for a car anyway...
23. sexy... a Fender that actually doesn't look like a Fender... enjoy the free bump...
