1. guy in Cheltenham town center on Saturday was playing an "upright". On closer inspection, it turned out to be an East European fretless Jazz clone held inside an outer shell with a long spike to rest it on the ground with. It sounded very upright like... Think he had very "dead" flatwound strings on. Very "thumpy"... The guy on the drums was playing an assortment of pots and pans that had had skins stretched over the open ends...
 2. OK, I've gone up to a better quality Bass in the shape of my Peavey Millenium BXP, but I feel it's holding me back action-wise... I had the chance to play with a Fender 51P RI in one shop and a MIA Jazz in the other... I wasn't able to try out a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz as they hadn't arrived yet. What I really liked about the 51P RI was the low profile "vintage" frets... but I considered it to limit me in styles (yes, I know some early Jazz albums were recorded with a 51P). I did like the price I was offered though... £280 but didn't have the moulah immediately available... I liked the MIA Jazz, however the price was way outside my budget... and the frets... I'm not sure I like Jumbo frets anymore after having had a go with the vintage frets. I'm going to hold off on my next Bass decision until after having tried the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz... I've heard so much about it being a lot of Bass for your money... but it's got Jumbo frets... Anyone else wonder why everybody gets Jumbo frets pushed at them?
 3.
eBay is riddled with problems and pitfalls for the unwary. I also made a purchase from the States a few months back ($350), a month later I received a package (which I got clattered for duty and tax, but hey it was my choice to buy from the States so no complaints there). On opening the package I was presented with a box of timber offcuts... WTF!
ah yes, the modern equivalent of the "pig in a poke" scam... or the origin of the phrase "the cat's out of the bag"... and you got "left holding the bag" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_in_a_poke the problem for you is that the sum involved is so small the authorities can't be bothered and e-bay doesn't really give a ... either...
 4.
Get it wrong once, it's a mistake. Get it wrong twice, it's jazz

"There are no mistakes in jazz only opportunities" - Miles Davis
ah yes... just say you were exploring a different mode...
 5. I'd kill for a ticket if you could get Tal Wilkenfeld there... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRFkOrnds8I she's good... so much promise for the future as well.
 6. they appear to be having a big sale on... prices have been slashed...
 7. they ran a 100 80's hits program on telly on Sunday and I was pleasantly surprised just how many hits were Bass oriented... the Bass line defined them... pity the videos used barely showed the Bass player even if that was the entire sound
 8. would be nice if they came and did the main stage at next year's Gloucester International Rhythm & Blues Festival this year a washout and only a handfull of the gigs are going ahead... anyway... http://www.gloucesterblues.co.uk/ no use visiting the website at the moment... it's down... a large chunk of Gloucester has currently gone offline...
 9.
At your service, sir! Here are links to three mp3s of James Jamerson at work, isolated from the rest of the instruments. Educational stuff! [i]Folks... Please DOWNLOAD the files, don't play them off my server - I'll get into trouble with my ISP. Windows: right-click the link and select "Save target as..." Mac: Ctrl-click and select "Download linked file" Thanks,
tried that, got just 200 byte files... which when examined in a text editor had this:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC &#34;-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN&#34;> <HTML><HEAD> <TITLE>404 Not Found</TITLE> </HEAD><BODY> <H1>Not Found</H1> The requested URL /reachout.mp3 was not found on this server.<P> </BODY></HTML>

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC &#34;-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN&#34;> <HTML><HEAD> <TITLE>404 Not Found</TITLE> </HEAD><BODY> <H1>Not Found</H1> The requested URL /standing.mp3 was not found on this server.<P> </BODY></HTML>

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC &#34;-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN&#34;> <HTML><HEAD> <TITLE>404 Not Found</TITLE> </HEAD><BODY> <H1>Not Found</H1> The requested URL /wgo.mp3 was not found on this server.<P> </BODY></HTML>
10. any colour other than orange and I'd have snapped it out of your hands... I'd even have driven over to London from Gloucester... and filled up my water bottles while at yours... and begged you for the use of your shower... heck, I haven't had a decent wash now for a few days... not since Sunday morning when the mains water failed after the treatment plant for the entire county got flooded out. Everyone's having to make do with sponge baths and baby wipes... anyroad... someone's gonna get a right bargain there...
 11. misleading thread title... I was thinking that Tesco had started carrying instruments in their stores and that it was time for the local music shops to give up and just roll over and go out of business...
 12. I think the sticker can be saved... not sure about the rest of the Bass though...
 13.
Loads of people were dancing, and really enjoying the music, all age groups and a lot of people afterwards said how much they'd enjoyed the music. and that it wasn't what they'd expected.
from my limited experience so far, four feel can be nice and "bouncy" making it easy to dance to and two feel gives a nice slow dance mellow chill out mode...
 14.
Check out Anthony Jacksons playing on the Michel Petrucciani trio live in Tokyo album.
thanks, got that coming down the pipe now... give me something to listen to while waiting for the floods to recede... If it's good, then I'll buy it, if I can find anywhere that carries it...
 15. Just what recordings or Bassists should be considered landmarks in the art of walking a bassline? Electric Bass especially.
 16. that last one is Tea Carrera... does she actually play Bass? wikipedia says she sang all her songs in WW2
 17.
Found these 2 odd chrome covers in my parts box... not sure what they belong to! FREE to a good home. I just need £1 for P + P.
PM'd
 18. argh... I'd love the VM, but I've made a solemn promise to myself NOT to purchase any more Basses until Christmas... and even then, a bigger combo amp comes first in the GAS order...
 19. at home, firefox 2.0.0.4 on Ubuntu Linux: No problems at work, firefox 2.0.0.2 on XP Pro: No problems... both firefoxes using NoScript extension and scripting is turned on for basschat. Just thought I'd chuck in that I'm not experiencing problems at all.
 20. what's to see... I just get an "Invalid Item" error
 21.
I am looking for a jacket just like this, medium/large size. Cannot afford one though. I had a black one but my dad used it to make car seats for his MGBGT If you give it away, I will pay postage I need it to wear, and wont let me Dad get his hands on it..!! Thanks, Matt Denney.
my dad used the cover off an old leather sofa for his seats when he recovered them... I'm surprised your dad managed to get so many covers from one leather jacket... is there something you're not telling us?
 22.
If the fretboard is really caked try using really fine grade wire wool. Make sure you rub it in the same direction as the grain, you won't have to press too hard. This will also shine up the frets pretty nicely. After you do this use warwick wax to re-hydrate the wood, you'll notice a big difference. If you want to make a really spanking job of the frets use Brasso or a similar kind of metal polish. Brasso make a 'wadding' version that comes in a tin, this stuff is particularly easy to use but either the brasso paste or liquid work fine too. Make sure you mask up the frets as warwickhunt shows in his pics.
if you're using wire wool, then mask off the pickups and cavities as well... MODS, this thread needs stickying... or else adding as a link into an existing sticky...
 23.
i paid 15 euros for 2 gigabyte sandisk cart was a good price that why i risked to get it ...i've read on some forums that the micro br with bigger sd cards will work always at 1 giga....but i tried
it actually gives the limit in the leaflet "about memory cards" that should be in the box.
 24. get thyself down to Staples... 512 meg SD cards are a fiver... 1 Gig for a tenner far cheaper than the ones in Tesco's, Asda etc. they're trying to gouge you for £18 for a 1 Gig one... and to think, three years ago, I paid £90 for a 128 meg one for my Palm PDA...
