  1. Gong Shamal. Different that Daevid Allen Gong, moving towards Pierre Moerlens Gong. Mike Howlett BURNS. Produced by Nick Mason.
  2. Oh...The Bad Plus doing "Chariots Of Fire". I almost drove off the road the first time I heard it.
  3. Brings me back to when I first got my first amp modeler - a Line 6 PODX3 Live. For my Chapman Stick. After much time spent w/ every amp model on both bass and guitar settings, I accidently tried the Prog Vocal preset (vintage-style channel strip) and was AMAZED at the clearness of tone. At once the words of the engineer at my first recording studio gig came back to me as I was plugging all my noisy live gig equipment in, "No, we're running your bass straight into the board." So I'm still using the POD 11 years later (it hasn't blown up yet) and while I have my favourite amp models programed, the easiest good sounding sounds are the channel strip sims.
  4. Bari is totally cool in the Bass Land spectrum of Me. My first Stick - melody side was too high. Greg Howard came up w/ the Baritone Melody tuning (a 4th lower) but I came into my own w/ the 12-string Dual Bass Reciprocal. It puts "my" guitar hearing in the right place. You gotta play what you hear.
  5. I dig it totally. And. Not a Rush fan. And.
  6. The orchestral bells are in between Cutler (drummer) and Frith (everything strings and marimba too) so it might be for quick reach but I kinda like the thought of hitting it with mallets/sticks and it DOES have a drum head.
  7. In the percussion section next to the tubular bells is a banjo. Hanging.
  8. Timbuk 3! I just mentioned them to my gf Sunday. Saw them at The 8x10 Club in Baltimore. Shades of Cool - Lana Del Rey
  9. Put a standard Big Muff in front of a Morley Wah and you WILL cut thru anything. AND...I have a Line6 PODX3 Live (really old tech, barely hanging on) and "blend" Tone 1 & Tone 2 one clean one "Muffed" and get a wonderful sound. I like clean bass, I like saturated bass, I like fuzz bass. Bassbassbass. Grrrrrrrr. Of course these days it's a Chapman Stick 12 string Dual Bass Reciprocal and it's the most full-range (and difficult) bass ever conceived (my opinion).
  10. Jimi would have switched to Stick. Karen would have produced.
  11. Obscured By Clouds - Pink Floyd. It's brain floss for me.
  12. I have gnomes that come in whilst sleeping and dodger my settings and set-ups. I swear.
  13. Question to all you armchair quarterbasses out there. re: the Entwistle/Squire debate - would the Peppers be The Peppers w/out FLEA?
  14. To the OP (The-Ox) - if you're still a BassChatter-follower: Chris Squire. Major influence in my musical education. Although I played a Jazz Bass strung w/ Ernie Balls Roundwounds with my fingers and I WANTED to sound like Chris, I wound up sounding like Me. (still do). It was the ATTITUDE of his note choices, phrasing, conviction. The ensemble benefited by all this, yet a distinctive voice nontheless.
  15. A lawnmower cleaning the floor of a screw factory.
  16. Because I play the Chapman Stick, I tend to mess with standard sets of strings on my basses as low as (low-to-high) C# F# B E. Still a sharp key, fret markers don't make me insane, and I like the looser tension - as the Stick is lower tension (although special design strings). But if I were playing with mates, who knows. My guitars have mediums & I never tune to Standard they are always Joni Tunings or some such pertubation. The Stick is a keyless instrument (no open strings and fret markers are five frets apart which makes sense in 4ths & 5ths tunings) so my brain has kinda exploded...I currently do not own 5-string, but when I did, it was EADGC and I would detune to D when needed. Of course I do also have a 8-string fretless that sounds bonkers when the E's are tuned to C and the other octaves strings are tuned down a 4th...
  17. Fender Sandblaster! That's a model they should put out!
  18. Those are pretty neat speakers. This may be a dumb question but wouldn't a couch do?
  19. I'm not going to have the shop owner or salesman take it down from the wall if I'm not attracted to it. It's like a car or a woman. If I'm not attracted to it I'm not even gonna take it out for a test drive. Not being glib here. It's a whim until it gets in your hands - then it's a commitment. But... My Pedulla was a special order (after I had played one). And the 12-string Chapman Stick was ordered from photos on website - dark bamboo. Mail-Order Brides?
  20. I used to worry about what my bass looked like. Like, keeping those stupid chrome thingys on my Jazz bass.
  21. "Don't let the bass player count in." Personal experience I did the "cat-skinning" solo then played the first 8 bars and it kept getting faster & faster and I got reprimanded by the drummer 'cause it was too damn fast.
  22. I always thought Carly Simon should get some kind of Award for "No Secrets" for, you know, those "no secrets" of hers. THEY are Rock and Roll.
  23. "Like RHCPs doing Green Day." Haha. I shut it off when I saw the Zappa mustache. Someone should tie him down and shave him. The Zappa Family Trust would sue him. If it wasn't so bad.
  24. I bought a Hartke bass for $30US and tore the frets out. Then the P pu went out so it only has the J. (Wadda ya want fer $30?) I blacked out the H and ke with a Sharpie so now itsa "art" bass...problem solved...
